A couple of observations; besides that, you guys do an incredible job on these videos. The first is that I have run the Dallas Ultra a few times, and this new venue is much different. There seemed (to me) to be much more technical running through the dry river beds with large loose rocks. You had to be careful with footing, and I saw several people go down with ankle sprains. I do a lot of technical running in training, but it still meant I had to pay attention, so the mental side of this course had greater demands. In previous venues, there was a lot of running out in the open, and in Texas, no matter the heat, the sun can get hot. At this venue, however, we spent much time under tree cover, so the sun and heat were not a significant factor even though it got to 93 degrees. I really liked the venue, and I heard that Granbury gave Spartan 100k to host the event, and I would be surprised if it doesn't become a mainstay on the schedule. I know I will be back there next year. Hope to see you guys soon on the course.

Thank you! And you know us, slow as dirt. Our time on the course was 10hrs, but that did include meeting people, swapping batteries, and framing shots. No land speed records for us. We would totally do the Dallas Ultra again. The venue and the experience was just awesome, and we like it way better than where we typically do an Ultra (in NJ). It's way warmer in Granbury TX and far less hills/mountains than at Mountain Creek. TX would be our Ultra location of choice.

Great video! Thx for coming to Texas! Thx for all the videos! So helpful! I was asked about my weekend, when I shared all that I accomplished (first ultra anything 6th Spartan) I was told open heat devalued the sport and mocked for getting a finishing metal. Wow ok? Briefly what are your thoughts 🤔?
@OCRKings
@OCRKings Жыл бұрын
Thanks and glad to help. Well done on the ultra! Not sure why anyone would mock open waves. Everyone is at different fitness levels yet they sign up and go to races testing themselves and often reaching points when muscles give up... how is that effort not worthy of a medal!? Often its the open wave where elites are born, start with opens, and get excited and amp up training and move up to AG and Elite. Not to mention older folks (Mack and I aren't young anymore) who are feeling the wear and tear of life still pushing hard... And from a business standpoint - how would the sport exist without the open waves - they are the sole group that pays for the franchise/sport to exist. Without them, there is no sport! Sounds like the person who told you that is really missing the point. We could talk about the awesome ocr community and other stuff too which make the whole sport awesome but we'll leave that maybe for a future video :)

That twister probably had lots of people doing burpees. What I noticed about the ultras is that you have to have tremendous grip endurance or else burpees gonna add significant time to your race.
@OCRKings
@OCRKings 6 ай бұрын
Yeah man, lap 2 especially. Lot's of people falling off on lap 2. I think though that at this race they had a penalty loop instead of burpees at twister.

I saw you guys! I was doing my first Trifecta there and ran the Beast there. I hope to one day give it a shot at the Ultra. I rolled both ankles because of agonizing knee pain. I was barely on mile 4 when I got hurt, then my other knee, then I couldn’t stand up because I lost my strength, but after a minute on the floor I regain some strength and finished. I felt nerve pain from hip down to my feet and rolled both ankles while jumping over rocks because I lost my strength. You guys are awesome. No wonder y’all looked so familiar hahaha.. This is an old business page, I should make a personal KZbin.

Thank you, and good luck in Dallas! Yes, we both used a drop bin, but with a twist. We each got a cooler from Walmart and packed them partially with ice and the rest with our gear in plastic bags. It kept our stuff cool, and they made great seats to sit on. More on that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmi3lKuQjbWkY68

@OCRKings
@OCRKings Жыл бұрын
I saw people carrying Armor up but thought I might need my strength for later in the ultra so I let it hang. I like that idea though. I've been lucky on ankle rolls at races... Mack, not so much. He broke his ankle once at Bonefrog, and rolled it real bad at spartan NJ. As for rope climb... it really helps having obstacle builds at home. That's something we train on regularly (but its still not easy).

Awesome job guys! I finished my first trifecta with the beast and sprint there this last weekend. Question for you guys. How do you guys train for your races?
@OCRKings
@OCRKings Жыл бұрын
Great job earning that trifecta! As for training... we are pretty lucky that we have space and a trail system that allows us to build obstacles and run. We even have a river thru the area so... we train just like race day as much as possible (wet obstacles, cold, etc). We are usually running trails. Hate road running and we both agreed that the small terrain variations on trails adds strength to all the muscles of the feet and up the legs. We try to do a long run every weekend, and meet up for obstacle training mid-week. The other days are filled with whatever we want (Mack teaches at a dojo and I play lacrosse) so our training is full of variety. Neither of us belong to a gym but have weights/rack, elliptical/treadmill, and other training gear at home.

Do we use the same pair of shoes throughout the whole race or how should I go about that sir?.
@OCRKings
@OCRKings 9 ай бұрын
Hey there, sorry for the late reply. Great question! At our first Ultra we both packed spare shoes in the drop bin just in case there was an issue with the first pair during lap one. Neither one of us swapped out for the new/dry shoes on lap two. We did change into dry socks, however. In Dallas last year, neither of us packed spare shoes at all. We were flying out there and had limited space to carry stuff, and since we have always put the wet/muddy pair back on after changing to dry socks, we just packed, used, and put back on the same shoes from lap one. That's not to say having a backup pair in the drop bin is a bad idea. If you are driving to your Ultra, and have room in the drop bin, a plan b for footwear is not a bad way to go. Worst case scenario, if you don't use them on lap two you can always use them to walk in dry comfort back to the car. Either way, good luck, keep on moving, and get that buckle! AROO!

Have you guys ever gotten injuries? Any suggestions on how to prevent them? I lightly sprained my finger on one obstacle recently. It sucks. Feels like I wont be 100% again. Maybe 99%.
@OCRKings
@OCRKings Жыл бұрын
The list of injuries is quite long my friend for both Mack and I (Damer). My worst was deattached hamstring which required surgery and a ton of rehab. Mack has gone thru some big injuries too (including broken leg at a bonefrog race). Not setting the pace like we used too with all the aches and pains and really trying to tackle obstacles using technique over pure strength now. You might be right with losing a little bit here and training helps prevent those injuries, but they still happen all the time. I can't get thru a trail run without at least one damn ankle roll! Hopefully with time you can get back to 100%.

Looking to do the ultra in Dallas this year, can anyone who has done other ultras confirm this is one of the easiest due to the flat terrain?
@OCRKings
@OCRKings 4 ай бұрын
As far as Ultras we've done, this is by far the flattest terrain we've experienced. If it's at the same location this year, it is really really nice, flat, an varies between desert, wooded/brush, and dried river bed terrain. There was one "big" hill near the end, but it was really short.
