They keep razor blades in the "Peak" of their caps to "Blind" and cut people. The Peaky blinders were a real gang back in the day. Inspector Campbell is based on a real historical character as well. What makes this series so good, it has threads which are based of historical fact.

Replaceable razor blades were not available in uk until 1908 and the blinders had been going since 1880s. The term 'blinders'is more likely related to the gangs fashionable appearance, in slang known as a blinder. Peak referred to peak hats worn

They were a real gang but the razor blades in the cap weren't. The name came from thier smart dress code and peaked caps and they never made it "big" and very few people could afford razor blades back then

Thomas Shelby is such a complex character and needed an actor of Cillian Murphy's caliber to pull him off. -------- He's the perfect mix of savvy businessman and vicious gangster. A perfect vessel for us to see the balance between logical planning and his gypsy cultural superstitions. -------- He is mindful to always address both halves of his nature which makes things so much more unpredictable. Freddie is too idealistic for Tommy even after seeing the war, that's where the friction came from. Tommy killing the white horse this episode symbolizes how that innocent part of him died after he came back from war. Grace calming him down with her singing brings back that side to him and maybe start that healing process from his war trauma, the implication is that after the interaction with Grace, Tommy sent the note to Freddie because there's still a small part of him that hopes and believes instead of just being rational and pragmatic all the time

The Shelby gang are small and very young. Kids back then had to grow up fast, especially since they would start working at 6 or 7 years old. This led them to be ruthless and dangerous to survive in the Birmingham underworld. ------- Their prior War experience certainly help in cultivating their ruthlessness and inhibitions for violence. ------- This makes for a very compelling storyline.

The real Peaky Blinders were small time thieves in the late 19th century. The Peaky Blinders in the show are based on the Birmingham Boys (Brummagem Boys) aka Billy Kimber's gang in the early 20th century, when the Peaky Blinders didn't exist.

People around the Midlands and other poorer people would have still been using "cut-throat" Razors. Which oddly are now much more expensive and only used by people with a lot of money. It is true however that people who had fought in the trenches may well have seen the new razors that were issued to Officers

To understand the distrust of Communists requires a little historical context. By the start of the First World War dissent had been brewing in the working classes across Europe for several decades as the writings of Karl Marx became more widely disseminated. That wasn't so different than the previous century, but then in the middle of the war a revolution brought down the Russian Empire causing something akin to panic in the other established European monarchies. If the Russian Tzars could be toppled by a populist revolution then no ruling class was truly safe. Couple that with the fact that the Soviets dropped out of the war once they took power, leaving the Western Powers facing Germany on a single front and the distrust grew even stronger. Then the war's conclusion dissolved the German Empire and replaced it with a republic. Hapsburg rule in Austria/Hungary was wavering, the days of the Ottoman Empire in the east looked numbered, and much of Ireland was in open rebellion against the Crown. By 1919 the British Government was experiencing something close to paranoia over the prospect of Communist ideas lighting a fire beneath a working class brutalized by the first industrial war, and a populist revolution sweeping away the old order.
@GodlessScummer5 ай бұрын
Good comment mate. I should add that 1919 is as close as Britain's ever gotten to a revolution. However there was no group or organisation who were either willing or able to lead a revolutionary taking of power. Russia had the Bolsheviks who although a relatively small party they had the organisation and roots within Russia's working class to be in a position to seize power. Britain had no such group. The Communist Party of Great Britain wouldn't be formed until 1920 and never in a position to be a major threat to the establishment. I think for historical context as well when looking at this show and looking back at this time in history it's important to note that we have the luxury of being able to look back at the USSR and the way Communism developed over the 20th century and know how it turned out. But it's important to realise that in 1919 there was a lot of hope for the Soviet Union and a lot of hope in Communism for many people who couldn't have foreseen just what the USSR would turn into.
@noneofyourbeeswax012 ай бұрын
@@GodlessScummerEngland experienced a revolution that toppled the Stuarts and led to Thomas Cromwell and his Roundheads taking power, seeing the first public execution of a monarch when King Charles 1 was beheaded. There was another revolution against the converted-to-Catholic King James that saw William of Orange invited to take the Crown, instituting William and Mary on the Throne and marking the end of the reign of the Stuarts. I guess the Industrial Revolution doesn't really count though... :)

Hey Spartan and Pudgey, you must remember Tommy burnt the letter before he had his meeting with the investigator, where new details came in implicating Ada as one of the communist party (guilty by association with Freddie) - Tommy wanted to protect her by moving her away ( she's a potential weak spot while trying to negotiate with the Inspector Campbell), and the easiest way to do this is to move Ada and Freddie out of the action and out of harm's way. --------- Too bad Freddie doesn't follow the script, such is the Life of a revolutionary.

Its all about the characters and its like you said, not only is the writing topnotch, but the cast and performances are absolutely phenomenal as well. Its too good and in my opinion better than breaking bad, because of how much they are taking advantage of each episode here. In that sense its like a limited series in the best sense. They don't waste time, there are no fillers and the pace is incredible. Length of the series is perfect. The kind of writing that they know when to stop, instead of having filler episodes/seasons like so many other shows do. Cillian Murphy is having the time of his life in this, and his performance is sublime to say the least.

Does anyone else notcie how pudgey can't help looking at herself on the computer during the reaction over and over. Really makes it feel disingenuous to me. It's like she's constantly worried about how she looks during the reaction. Especially when it's time to react to something she'll look over in the middle of it. Crying laughing, whatever the reaction calls for, she always looks over to see how she looks while she gives the reaction. Watch it back and count just how many times she glances at the recording next time. It's distracting and why I keep taking breaks and getting tired of yalls reactions. I could understand an occasional glance, but the number of times she does it is insane. If you watch it back objectively, you'll see what I mean. I'm not trying to hate either. Quite the opposite. Overall, I love you guys and wanna watch stuff with yall because I usually agree with yalls takes, but her obsessing with herself during the reaction really kills it for me.
