Sounds pretty good. Can we tear down Westgate Mall next? It’s a complete eyesore and with Bed Bath and Beyond closing soon there’s really nothing left of value there. I’d say to tear it down and build a larger shopping area like Magnolia Park in Greenville where we can have plenty of stores and restaurants.
@GoSpartanburg Жыл бұрын
I think a redevelopment of Westgate will soon become a must. It's privately owned though, and last I heard the owners were happy with how it was. As businesses close within it, that might change. Some potential plans that were discussed as a good avenue included keeping some of the anchor stores with their respective buildings, and adding townhomes, single family residences, small businesses in an outside setting, maybe a grocery store. Could make for a great mini village!

Blink and you'll miss it, but at 2:29 there's a cute little blue building tucked between the green one on the left and the orange/red brick one on the right. Just a little reminder of what we could build before the sad advent of zoning and minimum parking regulations.
@GoSpartanburg Жыл бұрын
There's pros and cons to most things. Not having zoning made for more unique opportunities per parcel... and also a bit more chaos! It's neat to see some of the buildings that have been grandfathered in, as a reminder of our heritage.

8:41 wow, still so much room to grow. All those surface-level parking lots are like blank canvas waiting for something other than vehicle storage to bring them to life. Kind of sad, too, since if you went back 100 years, those would have been largely buildings, lost in the tough times of suburbanization and population loss.

Love the video. My question is what is taking so long for the Fairfield project to commence? And any conjecture on what will happen in the grain district?
@GoSpartanburg Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that remediation needed to happen for that site, hence the hold up. For the Grain District, I've heard perhaps a conference center with apartments. HOWEVER! I am still crossing my fingers for a long rumored baseball stadium, or even a multi court facility for sports. Sports are the biggest draw to Spartanburg, and that would only help strengthen an already strong tourist attraction. More to be revealed, hopefully by the end of the year!

As a former SMC student, I think it would have been nice to have had better mass transit in Spartanburg to connect colleges with downtown, but something better than just buses. If it weren't so costly, it would be nice if there were some sort of suspended monorail or even a street tram system (and, no, a city doesn't have to be HUGE to have a light rail system, contrary to popular belief).
@GoSpartanburg Жыл бұрын
Interestingly enough, we uses to have a rail system! Wouldn’t mind having something connecting Spartanburg to the airport to Greenville. That would help open up a lot of opportunities!

Okay, next let's rename the city from "Hub City" to something more appealing.
@richardcribb9226 Жыл бұрын
Spartanburg is also called Sparkle City which is derived from a 1950’s rock group from the area who achieved national fame called the Sparkletones. Spartanburg has also been called the Crossroads of New South because of its location at intersection of interstates 26 and 85. The nickname Hub City derived from the railroad tracks that radiate from the city like the spokes of a wheel.
@GoSpartanburg Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that background info! Wasn't aware!

The entire city of Spartanhood should've been bulldozed under in the mid 90s.
@orgrichard Жыл бұрын
A lot of Spartanburg has been bulldozed. Most of the older dilapidated crime ridden public housing project projects have been demolished or remodeled. The only one left is Norris Ridge next to the Beacon. The residents there are being relocated to a new apartment complex several blocks away and Norris Ridge will be demolished when the process is complete. A major initiative to revitalize the north side neighborhood of the city has been underway for several years and many houses there have been demolished and rebuilt. Sadly, in recent years one of Spartanburg’s historic houses, Bon Haven, was demolished. Spartanburg’s history with urban renewal goes way back to 1960 when it initiated the the first major urban renewal project in the state to clear out a depressed neighborhood known as the Gas Bottom. I the 1970’s a large area on the south side of the of the city was demolished for urban renewal. A Black Culture monument is now under construction to honor the history of that area.

It doesn't matter, he will always be the youngest son of Greenville.
@GoSpartanburg Жыл бұрын
There's also been a bit of rivalry between Greenville and Spartanburg. Probably felt more by those in Spartanburg than those in Greenville. For a while, going to Greenville was basically the only option if one wanted to have a special evening. I guess we are thankful that the need to HAVE to leave Spartanburg is coming to an end! Though of course, supporting other towns in the area is also important.
@orgrichard Жыл бұрын
In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, it was Spartanburg that led the way in transforming the economy of the Piedmont region from locally owned textile mills to being more global and diverse, by bringing in foreign investment, new for SC at the time, German and Swiss companies that located along I-85 (now business 85) at Spartanburg. Spartanburg also had the first airport, air mail service, radio station community foundation fund, school for disabled children (deaf and blind) and artists guild in the state. It is where the first college football game in SC was played and where in 1912 the first organization in SC for women’s suffrage (right to vote) was formed.

Increasing urban density is so important if you want a healthy, fun, and safe downtown core. And frankly it is the only way toward sustainability if we want to have any hope of curbing the use of fossil fuels and reducing carbon emissions. The fact that Spartanburg will be installing proper bicycling infrastructure is another huge step in the right direction since both Spartanburg and Greenville both have some of the mildest seasonal weather in the country, weather that is conducive to cycling year round. Amsterdam has almost 70% of its population commuting to jobs and shopping and its weather is not as nice as the weather in Spartanburg. So adding serious biking infrastructure has so many benefits that it would take a book to list out all the benefits.
