Race #2 in the 2021 US National Series takes us to Utah for a Beast.
Hawk Call, son of legend Hobie Call leads through 9 miles before Ryan Atkins closes in.
An intensely close race throughout that ends with two surprise podium finishers.

ME TOO!!! Maybe it was just too intense for a rabbit to follow on this race, but I doubt that. I think Steve Hammond ran the course every single day. If anybody can keep up with these guys it's him.

@@jeterj1107 Possibly. I enjoy watching the Utah race from 2019 every once in while since I got to do that one as well. Great coverage from this year's race, but I do enjoy the commentary. The commentary is what helped me to learn how to perform better on certain obstacles with the tips they provided. Hopefully they go back to that type of coverage eventually.

So glad to see these races broadcast again. I've got great respect for these athletes, but the camera men should get some recognition on the podium too. Thanks for the footage. Great job!

Thanks for bringing back the coverage! Would prefer a little more voiceover play-by-play (or live full race), but mostly just stoked to have some quality motivation!

@Ewld

I think we should probably be glad that we're getting this race coverage at all, but I'd also appreciate something like a race timer in a corner, and perhaps a short list in a corner every now and then with the "currently in first/second/third place". But I appreciate David and Steve giving updates verbally, as well as the course map popping up every now and then. Thanks for the coverage Spartan!
@flphoenix

@@Ewld That would be nice, but compared to how they have covered in the past, this is several dozen steps backwards. They could have had Magida and Steve do a running commentary in post-production
@Ewld
@Ewld 3 жыл бұрын
@@flphoenix I have to agree it's been better/more thorough in the past. Most annoying this time around was some of the verbal coaching/motivating/informing the camera men did. I mean, if it's just a couple guys having fun out on the course that's all fine, but if you're trying to be more of a professional sports competition that sort of assistance doesn't feel right (to me). In a professional competition the camera people should just be neutral observers in my opinion.

@@genecasimero1103 at least in Europe (for the countries I've attended races at, with different Spartan organizations and MC's), that hasn't been the case. And the elite women's race from this exact same Utah Beast event does have it correct at the start. Just a few hours ago Spartan Australia posted a throwback to a local Spartan Ultra where "Who am I?" was also the question that is answered with "I am Spartan". But maybe there have been US races where people did mix it up, I don't know. I'd still bet on this one video being a simple editing error.

@@Ewld woops, you're right. I just said it aloud both ways right now and it didn't sound right and it definitely is an editing error. I probably wasn't thinking straight when I last replied. Also where in Europe are you from? Been thinking of joining a few European races, being from the Philippines I've only raced in South East Asia but I do plan on racing in other continents as soon as the whole pandemic is over.

@@genecasimero1103 ha, alrighty, at least I'm not going completely nuts then 😅 I'm from the Netherlands, attended Spartans here in The Netherlands, and in the UK, Ireland, France, Czech Republic and Sparta, Greece. If I'm completely honest, that last one maybe isn't the most challenging or pretty location (aside from the gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains), but the whole vibe, international crowd, and the 'feeling of being there' did really make it worth the trip and expenses for me. In Europe I think the most challenging or worthwhile are generally considered Morzine and Andorra, but that's just what people have been recommending to me online and in person, I haven't been to either myself (yet). You can check a few photos from some of the locations I've been to on my Instagram: instagram.com/ewaldtienkamp

Oh my, that was a brutal course. Almost signed up for the Ultra Beast but I think I would have probably passed out from dehydration. It was almost 100 degrees on Saturday and it broke 100 on Sunday! That Beast was a BEAST! The climb that Dave said was the "big climb of the day" was rough cause it was up rocky terrain with a stream running through it, but the climb before this was tougher in my opinion cause it was so long and steep in a few sections. It seemed to go on forever! "Zombie Hill", as someone referred to it on Sunday, was no joke! Luckily the views were phenomenal, which were distracting at times. Other than that hair, Hawk looks like a split image of his dad, maybe 20 years ago. Running Timpanogos is no joke! I see Timp everyday from my front yard and have hiked it and that would be a brutal climb. So glad this race is over but can't wait for next year! Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't #5 Tyler "Weerman" supposed to be Verrman?

As far as I know since 2018 the vertical supports have been allowed according to the rules and it was just the horizontal top/bottom/cutouts that were off limits. Don't happen to have any older rulebooks to verify this, but the current rulebook (v21.1) (still?) claims that this is the case (chapter 4.2.15).
@adamstarling7399
@adamstarling7399 3 жыл бұрын
Even though it appears it's acceptable based on the rulebook, I still stick to the pre-2018 rules when the walls didn't have the open sections in the middle and don't touch it. I can't help but feel like I'm cheating the obstacle as it makes the blind reach around way too easy.
