Well, it's basically just going back and forth between the guitars, trying to figure out what fits for bass in terms of left hand patterns and how the end product sounds. So I'd say it's not actual bass lines, just an adaption from the guitar work. Also, I don't see this as a competition by any means, as many people seem to think when it comes to bass players in metal. Different strokes and different aim in terms of what the music need. Cannibal and Spawn aren't really comparable musically.
@neonblack2114 жыл бұрын
Erlend Caspersen someone was silly enough to compare spawn to cannibal corpse? Hopefully most people meant it as a compliment.

Idle fingers are the devil's workshop. Errrr, I mean idle fingers, i.e ring and pinky on the right can easily be used for dampening strings going up and the palm of the left hand can be used as a capo at times, sort of. It's not a scientific method by any means, it's just something I do randomly switching back and forth between hands to mute out the worst. It's still pretty bad, but hey, it's bass. You can get away with almost anything, being buried under drums, vocals, guitars and marimba.

Google Steve DiGiorgio Right Hand Speed. He teaches 3-2-1-2 3-2-1-2, but says it best (and Erlend has echoed these sentiments before) "It's not a mystery to play fast, only developing muscle memory. The main thing is repetition and patience."

Well it's hard to see if you use two or three fingers, and what patterns you use, like if you do 1 - 2 - 3 - 1 - 2 - 3, or 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 or any other pattern.

Erlend, i've been practicing your sweeping technique since 3 months ago, just using one arpeggio shape all across the fretboard very very slow trying to build dexterity. Your technique it's awesome, the notes sounds way more even and articulated than Nitti's method. Just to made it clear, it's index pinky, ring, middle and rake up, right?, could you give some advices to learn the technique properly? Also, unlike other bassists, you almost never go down with your thumb muting the strings, the « thumb floating technique», the pickup is your home, even when playing the G string, it is because the tone or something? Thanks beforehand. PS; Sorry for my bad english and for writing too much haha.
@ErlendCaspersen8 жыл бұрын
KZbin put this comment in the spam folder for some reason, which isn't exactly something I check often. That's the correct method, and anchoring the thumb is the only way I feel like I have any control over what's going on. So yes, partially tone and partially having the strength to accentuate the notes properly so you can tell them apart. An other method is using the same concept as the Matthew Garrison method. One finger per string going from the thumb to the ring finger. Your hand is floating above the strings, so I guess it's akin to the floating thumb technique. Just a bit closer to classical or flamenco guitar picking, and provides a lot of options, especially because it makes string skipping effortless.
@angelc.44228 жыл бұрын
Im a little bit famirialized with Garrison's method. You should check out Dominique Di Piazza. Any advice with your sweep technique?
@ErlendCaspersen8 жыл бұрын
I've been working on both Garrison and Piazza's right hand technique for the past couple of years, so I'm well aware of his work :) Not much else to say about the sweeping technique. It's just a motion that you need to get "muscle memorized". What you use it for later, in terms of scales\modes and progressions is where you have to put in the work yourself to make it shine.
@angelc.44228 жыл бұрын

Tone is in the hands, not the settings. All settings are just flat, meaning they're dialed in at 12 o'clock.
