Hey Dan great video!! I was just wondering if acrylic yarn leaches. I have the same brand yarn as yours and was letting it soak but i saw some extra dye in the water. Would this harm my fish??

is there any other replacements for the yarn?

Live plants like red root floaters or frogbit but you have to be really careful if you ever remove some of these if they grow excessively because you might lose some fry with them.

Beats the old "wrap a book" method!
@zulemaflores12345 жыл бұрын
Great work! Tips for you! You can also use a notebook to wrap the yarn around the notebook. If you boil the yarn for 15 minutes, it will release any dyes and it also helps the yarn sink in the water.
@DansFish5 жыл бұрын
Yep. I hear you. However, I don't boil my yarn first. IME with synthetics like acrylic, dye release is not really a factor and if I boil it, they fine threads tend to wrinkle which makes them tangle easier. If I don't boil them, they are less likely to turn into dreadlocks.

Wow that so awesome. 👍 Thank u for sharing. Could u take a picture of the brand of wool u used? Also u mention that if u boil it would curl up?
@DansFish6 жыл бұрын
Crowntail, I just took a pic and put it on my facebook page at facebook.com/dansfishes/ . However, the brand does not really matter...I just use whatever is cheep at Walmart at the time. What does matter is that the yarn be 100% acrylic.

I purchase twinwall polycarbon sheets like folks use to make greenhouses. They cut super easily on a table saw. You have to be a bit careful because the plastic can be a bit sharp when it is first cut, but you can sand it down or line the ends with greenhouse tape. Here's the type of product I use. They come from many manufacturers in many thicknesses. www.amazon.com/Falken-Design-Falkenacrylic-MW-CL-6MM-3648-Polycarbonate/dp/B07BQHX4FG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1543966893&sr=8-3&keywords=twinwall+polycarbonate+6mm

Is green an aesthetic choice or a functional one?
@DansFish6 жыл бұрын
It is totally aesthetic. The color does not seem to matter in the least. I've seen people have success using mops made from pretty much every color.

Dan that looks like a lot of corks. Haven't had any wine in over a year; and I didn't even get a cork with it. It was wild mustang grape wine. Two men pick the grapes from all along the side of the roads out here in the country. Make the wine and sell it. Got a gallon jug for 30 bucks. I think it may have been a cider jug. Not sure. The man told me it had a breathing lid and to just use the lid because it needed to breath. Had a few cordials when I bought it. Then it say in the frig for a whole year plus a few weeks. The man that does my yard work said he'd love to have it. I tasted it to make sure it was still good. It was. It still had the kick to it too. Didn't take much for the room to spin and feel good all over. Still didn't get a cork. Can't have any. Doesn't go well with meds. Oh well guess I'll have to buy some at hobby lobby. Enjoy your wine parties. 🎉🍷🍷🍷🍷😳😘

So you don't need to boil out the dye?
@DansFish Жыл бұрын
Nope! At least not with the yarn I use. I think the "boil out the dye" thought is from days gone by when folks were using different processes to make yarn. I've never had acrylic yarn bleed dye into my water. It's acrylic after all.

That's huge mop, is that for blue gularis or rainbows?
@DansFish6 жыл бұрын
I use it for all kinds of killies and rainbows for spawning, but also as cover for characins, cichlids, and pretty much anything else that does not have spines which are prone to get caught in yarn (never use a mop with African Glass Cats...they might get caught in it). The big mop is to fit well in a 74 gallon tank. In smaller tanks, I use much smaller mops.

can we use any type of wool sir?
@DansFish5 жыл бұрын
I would not use any natural fiber...like that from a sheep...as it is likely to decompose in the aquarium. Personally, I use Acrylic yarn. It has never dyed my water or harmed water parameters IME.
