My first road trip in the Tesla. How long will it take to complete a 1,000 mile road trip in a Tesla Model 3, and more importantly how easy is it? Will I run out of charge and how much will it cost?
In this video I will be driving a 1,000 miles round trip road trip in the UK (York to Carbis Bay/St Ives in Cornwall), covering how I planned, prepped and completed the drive in my Long Range Model 3. What problems I faced, how much it cost me to charge and what I would do differently next time. #teslamodel3 #tesla #roadtrip
Thanks for watching, Chris.

We did a 2,500 mile round-trip road trip in my Model 3 last Christmas from Pontiac, MI to North Port, FL in the US. Was a blast! We had to supercharge 9 or 10 times each way, some as short as 20 minutes and some as long as 60. Seeing the range increase going from cold Michigan to hot Florida was fascinating. It also cost me nothing, thanks to some friends who used my referral code :)
@donmago

Loved the fine long-trip video. All seemed to translate well to doing a similarly-ranged trip in the USA. I noted seven hints that seem quite useful for our first long-range trip. My wife and I, both seventy-nine, just bought our remarkable Tesla Model 3 LR and have been using a "first things first" learning methodology. We have started out with home charging on our normal 110v charge supply at about 10 mph. Now installing 240 vac for 30 mph capacity. Our survey of local Tesla charging stations shows quite a nice choice, Florida has loads of vacationers so gets some favoritism, I'm sure. Your term "range anxiety" has hit home but your video went a very long way to help reduce this aspect of EV car ownership, thank you. Overall the Model 3 is such a joy to drive we feel compelled to try a longer trip very soon. The stay-at-home of this COVID pandemic makes driving in our Model 3 a very safe and very effective stress reliever and your encouraging video, even if in the UK, has been a huge help. Thank you again and keep it up. BTW have visited and road-tripped in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland in rented diesel automobiles. So glad Teslas are a big hit there. Hope one day to be able to rent a Tesla for a road trip in UK.

I think this goes to show that there’s no reason not to go full electric in the UK. @@thomasglover3834 I did: saw a person driving most of the way down England and only stopping where he usually stopped in a regular car. Seemed like a piece of piss to me.

I agree, the only concern would be if we see a huge increase in EV’s then do we have the charging infrastructure to deal with that many electric cars on the road? I rarely see Tesla’s right now and it was already somewhat an inconvenience to find a charger when going to somewhere remote like Cornwall.

Ooooh Jonathan, you're throwing good money away. You really ought to charge that battery up at every opportunity. The longer trips are (perhaps) where the PHEV loses out a touch, but of course if you can keep that battery topped up for commuting then it pays off nicely... I don't know the size of the battery, but surely it wouldn't take more than 30 minutes to whack it up on a 50kw charger?

Thanks for this. I just want to agree I've just returned from my first really long trip in my model 3 long range from Suffolk via the ferry at Portsmouth through Bilbao to Granada in the south of Spain (I.e. pretty much the total length of Spain) and it was utterly painless. We pretty much stopped when we would have done anyway and everything worked faultlessly. Some of the Superchargers were in unprepossing lorry stops but there was always a decent coffee whilst we were waiting. Our supercharging was free too but my rough calculation is that it would have cost about 40 quid on "fuel" each way under half the average costs in our previous diesel car.
@SpawnPoiint

Great video, the combined travelogue and Tesla charging format was really fun. My longest trip in my dual motor Model 3 is about 1,200 miles (San Diego California to Phoenix Arizona, 400 each way and about 400 in Phoenix over a week). My trip was with the opposite weather . . . full sun and 100 degrees (38 Celsius). I found that using the AC the entire time didn't seem to have much impact on range . . . about a 10% reduction. Superchargers made the journey incredibly easy. I did two stops each way, and after a bathroom break and having a coffee it was time to continue. While in Phoenix my hotel didn't haven charging but there were Superchargers at an upscale shopping area, so a couple of stops for dinner over the week sorted that out. Autopilot (with FSD) made the long drive almost effortless, and provided entertainment as it was fun to monitor the car and see when it decided to change lanes to overtake, or how to navigate complex freeway interchanges. Absolutely love my Tesla!

I have ordered an PHEV because I can't find an EV that has the capacity to tow my caravan. I see no reason why I shouldn't use a public charger to top up my battery when I can, as it helps increase my efficiency and reduce my Carbon Footprint. However, I do plan to only use slow chargers as my car will only take 3.7KW. There is no gain from using anything faster than that and will leave those for full EV's that can use the speed. Great video!

Longest road trip I have ever driver was about 2500 miles in 4 days. It was in a prius with a friend s fuel wasn't too expensiveand we opted to sleep in the car to avoid hotel costs.

Brilliant video - currently driving an Audi S5. Love the power but the fuel consumption is rubbish, more so the frequent stops at petrol stations! Am thinking of switching to the model 3 later this year. Your informative videos have helped me a lot, thank you

Amazing road trip. I have never driven an electric, but it looks really great. But I think I would get range anxiety! Undoubtedly, the charging infrastructure, times and range will improve over time, but as you've shown, with good planning long journeys are surprisingly feasible. I really enjoyed your video -- epic family grand tour!

I don't have an electric car, but I'd say any hybrid should have the same priorities as a full electric. The whole point is to reduce your fossil fuel usage. Even if you can only get 30 mi, they might as well be green miles. Hard to say, but buying into electric cars is buying into a green culture. Gotta let everyone get their green on

A word 'amazing' is not enough to describe your video, it is ideally composed and information delivered in an engaging way with a nice vibe. As a Norwegian who has followed EVs (such as Teslabjørn) for soon a decade, this is a fantastic format. First of all, it is palms up true life with an EV - in ways that traditional motor journalists can not (or will not?) do. It is demystifying and interesting at once (and it even reminds this Norwegian about how far we have come with infrastructure with just a few years head-start on my British friends. As John Lennon said - "Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end". This is certainly true for charging infrastructure. And as I think, I may have to wait for 20 minutes for a fast charge once a month or so. The upside is that my money goes to feed me a decent meal instead of feeding my car dino-juice. Secondly, I certainly enjoyed the trip and scenery, as I did visit some of these places almost three decades ago while spending around a year guest-visiting Bristol and Swansea Universities. You sure have a beautiful coastal landscape. Thank you for letting me piggyback on your trip via this excellent video (including the production value and narration).
