The woman came from, by royalty standards, practically nothing and became one of the greatest rulers Russia has ever had, with one of her lovers being about as loyal as a lover can be. I'm talking of course about Grigori Potemkin, who, after they stopped being lovers, remained so in love with her that he'd introduce her to men he hoped would hold her interest and affection. For anyone curious, Catherine the Great wasn't actually a sex crazed maniac that died having sex with her horse. She had 12 known relationships in her entire reign, and she died at 67 from a stroke. Catherine, like all female leaders of the past, was discredited by her enemies because of her sex. Rather than accept a woman could be a competent leader and make good decisions, it was easier for them to just believe she got things done through sex, not skill. Here's a quote from Frederick the Great (who coincidentally was in this rap) about Catherine the Great: "A woman is always a woman and, in feminine government, the cunt has more influence than a firm policy guided by straight reason." I think that quote pretty much speaks for itself on how dismissive people were of female rulers.

This is one of the better ones since it has an actual story. Ivan was the terrible because while he wasn't undefeated, he outlasted everyone, and seemed unbeatable, which is the story here. He loses the rap battle but outlasts his opponents, as they die how they died historically (Alexander was poisoned, Fredrick died during a party (sat down to rest and died peacefully)). However, he failed because he used the false story (which you apparently thought was true too) that she died having sex with a horse, which wasn't the case. She had a stroke and died in her bead after. The horse story (as well as a story as she died on the toilet) was propaganda spread by her political opponents, so she wins in the end, bringing up again that he died during chess. Amusingly though, Catherine isn't Russian technically. She was Prussian. She married a Russian noble, who ended up tsar, but was incompetent so Catherine replaced him and for quite a while was one of the strongest leaders in the world.

Yeah, "Stern" or "Cruel" would be a better nickname, and it is a closer translation to how we call him in Poland for example. Also, dunno if ERB did this intentionally, but when Catherine talked about how Macedonians, Prussians and Romans aren't worthy opponents? Well, Alexander was Greek (calling him Macedonian would be the same as calling Leonidas Spartan instead of Greek), and Frederick was German, but she herself wasn't Russian as she called herself in the next verse, but actually German. And yeah, she was... promiscues. Amongs her lovers was the last Polish king (before he was chosen - stupid ass elective monarchy - to be king, her support actually caused him to be chosen), with whom she actually had a son. But that horse story is almost definetly a lie. I mean, I try to not judge, so if she was into that that's her business, but it sounds too much like stuff her enemies would tell about her (and considering that thanks to her and Frederick - and stupid ass polish nobles and catholic church - that my country disappeared for over 100 years, I don't really like her myself, just putting it out there).
@wheresmyson12435 жыл бұрын
catxborsuq1 sparta was a city state located in Greece. Pella was a city located in Macedonia. Alexander the Great was ethnically Macedonian. In fact, the place Pella is located is still known as Central Macedonia. Your comparison doesn’t really hold up given that the Spartans recognised themselves as a part of Hellas and were definitely located in Greece whereas Macedonia was its own separate kingdom and was not considered part of Hellas by the Greeks.
@catxborsuq15 жыл бұрын
@@wheresmyson1243 "The Macedonians (Greek: Μακεδόνες, Makedónes) or Greek Macedonians are a regional and historical population group of ethnic Greeks, inhabiting or originating mainly from the Greek region of Macedonia, in Northern Greece, which incorporates most of the territories (and the two capitals) of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia." "The Macedonians (Greek: Μακεδόνες, Makedónes) were an ancient tribe that lived on the alluvial plain around the rivers Haliacmon and lower Axios in the northeastern part of mainland Greece. Essentially an ancient Greek people, they gradually expanded from their homeland along the Haliacmon valley on the northern edge of the Greek world, absorbing or driving out neighbouring non-Greek tribes, primarily Thracian and Illyrian. They spoke Ancient Macedonian, a language closely related to Ancient Greek or a Doric Greek dialect, although the prestige language of the region was at first Attic and then Koine Greek. Their religious beliefs mirrored those of other Greeks, following the main deities of the Greek pantheon, although the Macedonians continued Archaic burial practices that had ceased in other parts of Greece after the 6th century BC." Same region, nearly identical language, same believes... everywhere Macedonia is referred to as "ancient Greek kingdom". And even if we would somehow disregard all of that, the rulling dynasty was Greek, so Alexander himself WAS Greek.
@wheresmyson12435 жыл бұрын
catxborsuq1 Culturally yes, although that may have a lot more to do with the influence of Philip due to the previously semi-barbaric status of the Macedonians, but ethnically he was a Macedonian. True enough that the the Argives descended from Greeks, but even if we were to base it off heritage it’d make him more Epiran than it would Greek die to his mother, Cleopatra. The Macedonians also largely forfeit their own cultural identity. Largely inspired by Greeks yet but they definitely were not Greeks. According to the Greeks themselves effectively until the sacred war they were seen as semi-barbaric and were, during the Persian wars, offered an alliance but never actually formally invited to the Hellenic league. If what you say is relevant, why don’t we call Romans’ Greco-Etruscans due to the heavy influence from those groups? Evidence of this new identity comes from Alexander’s own campaigns. His companions, including Cleitus, never refer to themselves as “Greeks” but as “Macedonians” entirely separately. This leads to the question of what is Greek when the city states nearly all functioned entirely differently? And I’m supposed to believe that just because it’s called an Ancient Greek kingdom due to cultural similarities that Macedonians aren’t a separate culture whatsoever and are in fact part of the existing homogenous Greek culture at the time? The reason it’s referred to that way is as a blanket title - what exactly are the major similarities between Athens and Sparta that mean both of them are similar enough to be classed as the same kind of culture? I’m sure an Athenian or spartan believed that they were extremely different. Point is it’s irrelevant to say “well we call it an Ancient Greek kingdom” because not all Ancient Greek civilisations shared the same culture anyway - it’s simply an easy categorisation. Why can’t Alexander also be a Persian? He adopted Persian customs and brought them to court so how is he Greek and not Persian? Because that’s not where he was born. Ethnically, he was born in the semi-barbaric kingdom of Macedonia that shared many similarities with Greece but was clearly culturally distinct. Also, if you bothered to read into it more you’d understand that the way religion functioned in Macedonia was distinct from the way it functioned in Greece, the Macedonian language was distinct (Alexander once shouted an order in Macedonian purely to his royal guard), and that their art remained distinct from Classical Greek art. Culturally the ancient Macedonians were culturally similar to Greeks but still very separate. They had their own cultural identity recognised by the Greeks and themselves. Alexander was born in the kingdom of Macedonia to a mother from Epirus and a father from Macedon, this makes him ethnically Macedonian. It’s like calling Agricola French for being born in Gaul when he was quite clearly a Roman, or liking calling Darius the Great an Iranian.
