This fan comic make me think that Shadow wasn’t created for Dr. Gerald to somehow find a cure for his granddaughter’s illness but rather be a companion for her. I mean think about it: Maria has a rare, incurable and contagious disease so she has no choice but to stay in Space Colony Ark until a cure is found. Aside from her grandfather, she’s all alone and has no one on the colony her own age to spend time with and who knows how long it’d take before a cure for her disease is found and she can go back to earth. So what would be the perfect friend for Maria? How about a 3’3” anthropomorphic hedgehog that’s not only immune to disease but is also immortal? The intentions are clear: Dr. Gerald created Shadow to be a companion for Maria, not only is Shadow immune to illnesses so he won’t catch Maria’s disease but he is also immortal meaning he’ll live long enough to keep her company until a cure was found. Makes sense now, doesn’t it? Huh, if only they were allowed to live in peace and friendship, but sadly, Shadow’s best and only friend was take from and he couldn’t save her. Well, at least he has Sonic and the others, even if he doesn’t want to admit it, they’re his friends and I think Maria would be proud of him for all the heroic things he’s done since she passed away, it’s what she would’ve have wanted him to do.
