To add clarification, the worn timing chain isn’t what is causing our issue. Improper timing is but we discovered the chain has stretched and it makes sense to replace it and the guides when we are fixing the timing.
@Fyxxterzc4 жыл бұрын
The only issues I've heard the chain designed Honda engines have are tensioner related. 160k on my old rsx and had to replace the chain guides and tensioner. Love Honda engines but no engine comes without some issue. Luckily the k series is easy to replace all that on.

When you guys removed and installed the new cams, you hung the timing chain to the hood in hope that the chain would not lose its position to the main sprocket. I am afraid that is where you may have lost your original timing position.
@hegeliandetective10344 жыл бұрын
I've been in that frustration like Dave has, many times before. Ironic thing is that I'm sure that Dave will wake up early, or won't be able to sleep, and be motivated to research exactly what it needs to solve the issue, and the project will be that much better, than running the engine with a loose timing chain and chain guides at the track, so a much happier ending in the near future is coming!

Its reasonably easy to loose crank timing using the bungee cord to bonnet method as soon as it slacks or the guide on tensioner side might not sit on chain right when put tension back on. Better off doing it properly and changing the chain as they all have that stretch at 150kmiles anyway or chuck a chain crank guide on while your at it

It's amazing what Honda aftermarket makes. BMW has some great non-M engines with much greater displacement and torque than Honda from 2.8 to 3.2L, but low horsepower. But aftermarket doesn't give a damn, if you're not driving an S engine from M division you're not getting larger throttle bodies, intake manifolds, oil coolers, individual throttle bodies or anything.

It helps to a degree but also increases the torque load by extending the intake mass away from the block. The non ridged nature of it allows harmonic frequencies that can cause things to come loose or break

The timing is most likely the smoking gun here but what’s the overlap on the cams? Bigger cams with some overlap will actually drop your static compression ratio compared to baby cams. You know when would have been a good time to replace the chain the guides on a used motor? 2 years ago when you had this hole motor apart and decided to reuse the chains and guides and was playing with timing in the video using a thumbtack to hold the tensioner.... but hey reused used parts hold up great.... Cut corners and they have come back to get you guys multiple times now on this channel. But hey at least there more content showing us how not to do things.

I'm with ya guys on the fixing-things-then-finding-out-its-still-broken kick, I just replaced my mt82* on my ecoboost mustang and I dont trust it :/ Its just been replacing parts cause I need to, not cause I want to, takes the fun out of it. Same thing happened with my e92, put so much time into her fixing her and then she broke again. Cars are like an one sided abusive relationship and its really discouraging sometimes to get back out in the shop. We always come crawling back with more parts though. Carcaine. 😩 *Yes, I know mt82 is crap, I got an upgraded mt82. And yes I know about the lawsuit, already talked to the lawyers and since I didnt take it to the dealership for my repairs I probably wont be included for anything.

Yes we did. All the same. Timing would have to be off quite a bit to bend valves. It would read almost zero compression if the valves were bent.

I know i know - internet technician here. But slow down before you go replacing the chain. No way the chain stretched enough to allow 100psi cranking pressure loss over night. Start with properly timing the engine. Also, remember if the aftermarket cams are installed with a retarded installed centerline (usually done for more top end power) you will lose cranking compression (not 100psi, but maybe 20-30). But all this is moot unless you’ve done a compression test on the engine before the camshaft swap.
