Mechanic here from Quebec dealing with this everyday. Gonna give you 2-3 tricks to help you in the future. First off when going with the torche always have a spray bottle full of water. Help not burning rubber stuff, wires, what not and keep the heat localised. Also its easy to stop a small fire and it can be used to quench the bolt, helping further releashing it Second: hammer the socket on. Vibration helps brake the rust off and help the socket bite into the bolt. 3/8 socket is a must for rusted/striped 10mm Third: dont be scared of cutting the head off with the torches. The heat will help relashing whatever is keeping the bolt from turning and you are sure to have something to grab on afterwards. If the bolt goes through in this scenario dont try to back it off, screw it. The thread inside the aluminium are cleans, the ones on top arent it will go by the top like butter Hopes it help anyone with rusted out bolts
@timberthane2 жыл бұрын
whenever removing rusted frozen bolt, I like to apply some impact with a hammer and drift onto the head of the bolt. The impact down through the screw will fracture the adhesion and the screw will come out quite often without breaking.
@briancorrigan53502 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, it is part of the blessed trinity of getting stuck stuff unstuck or installed - shock (really unloading the tension/adhesion between the bolt and the hole), heat (the blue wrench, the fire pliers), and seldom used vibration. Okay, there is also penetrating fluids, and slow and steady back and forth. And when it all goes to hell, break out the hot metal glue gun and weld a nut to the bolt stub you just snapped the head off. Or, maybe break off a few drill bits and extractors as foreplay first. Thor's hammer to bang a slot into the mangled head? This is why god made visegrips. This is the part of living in the North East that I don't miss. It builds character though.

Had that same style oil plug on my front dif fill on my 4 runner strip out. I always weld nuts onto stripped, broken, and rounded off fasteners. When that fill plug stripped that's what you needed . On the transmission pan bolts just dropping a nut over the end of the bolt and filling the nut with weld. Wait til it's not glowing red then back it out.
@manqkasgarage62152 жыл бұрын
In this case you can try to weld a nut or the “bolt” let it cool down and try to unscrew not with impact gun 😃 if it’s snap do it again. And with welding you heated it too. I’ve been using this method on a lot of snapped or rusty bolts and even on a head bolt and it works good every time. Sometimes it’s very frustrating and slow ,but it’s pretty straightforward. Good luck if you have that problem in future( I hope you not) but you can try this method.

I think you could easily get those remaining studs out with stud extractors. It comes out much easier than you’d think. A little PB blaster. Also using an impact I’ve found yields much better results. The impact hammers tends to knock past the rust a lot better than using a ratchet. My steps are usually impact first, weld nuts on, and then stud extractor.

First step should always be soak in penetrating oil. After bolts have soaked, overnight with a few applications if it's this bad, then IMPACT ONLY. @@dalephillips8250 For the most part, no. They either use a non-corrosive liquid brine made from beet juice (in some areas with harsher winters, they might use salt). From Manitoba, eastwards, salt is used quite a lot. The holy grail of nice, used cars is Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. Short, mild winters with little snow. They'll need to be extracted, or drilled out .. possibly retaped. Start with a center punch marking in dead center of bolt. Then drill with smallest bit, gradually working your way up. 3/16 usually will push the bolt out. Use lots of heat if you have enough bolt to grab with vise grips. Cover internals with aluminum foil, wrap tight except for the bolt you're working on. You can also weld a nut on. Use pb blaster on the pan bolts days prior. You can massage in with a qtip.

I use Amsoil's heavy duty metal protectant. Dries to the touch, doesn't attract dirt, and stays on unless you go after it with acetone.

Just did this job on my 2007 a month ago had same issues I tried every trick in the book but the only one that worked was welding a nut on the broken studs it only took all day to do a 45 minute job lol

For added measure, I'd add some anti seize compound to the bolts after the Heli-Coil fix.

If you can, always try to buy a truck from the south or a sunbelt state. Arizona probably is best. Then after passing inspection, just coat that thing every month or so. I had a 2007 tacoma (sold it, hated the clutch feel) and I would periodically go up underneath and coat the frame. Had a 1995 Isuzu trooper (better clutch feel by miles) and I sprayed it a lot also. The guy who bought it said you could still see factory marks on it from 1995. Fluid film is what will save these trucks. Get a bottle today. I don't care if your truck is in a recall or not, spray that underneath. It just takes a little rust to ruin the whole car.

I decided to flush my 2010 Tundra transmission at 70,000 miles in 2021. 4 of the 12 bolts broke. I got 3 broken bolts out of the transmission case, and one I had to drill out and tap the hole. I really ended up cleaning the original threads with my tap. The bolts from wherever the transmission is assembled are JUNK! There's no other word for them!
@y.b.-2 жыл бұрын
Quick tip when dealing with rusty bolts guys, after heating give em a good couple taps with a hammer 👍 While it will not be a bulletproof solution, I have found that it significantly increases the success rate in removing bolts and nuts in some cases where they are flush (the back'n forth + PB blaster method is also helpful)

I went through this exact pan issue a few weeks ago. The pan rotted where the part is welded for the plug. The whole thing broke off with the plug. 10 bolts broke for the pan as well. Had to drill them all out. I blame the dissimilar metals for the breaking bolts issue. Even after removing the pan the remainder of the bolts still snapped off. So soft bolts, I was only using a 1/4 ratchet. I did this all on my back in my driveway. I almost threw in the towel like you did. Even the one bolt in the back side toward the center broke like yours. 2 days later up and running. Fluid was nasty. Almost 300k miles still trucking

Move to Nevada, VERY dry here, NOTHING rusts here. If you move to the Las Vegas area you’ll be close to the L.A area or if you move to the Reno area you’ll be close to Sacramento. I live in the Reno area 😎

Texas is definitely the best move, lots of land where you guys can build a shop and have the house on the same land! You guys will love it !! (Super biased answer since I’ve been in Texas for 9 years 😂)

just a tip you probably want to red loctite your helicoils since sometimes helicoils strip or back out when you remove the bolt, only draw back is you probably have to wait for the loctite to dry

come down to Tennessee it's south enough to avoid most of the cold most of the rust but not too hot. got lots of racing and car enthusiasts in the south and it's placed right in the middle of almost anywhere you might want to go in the eastern USA.

I'd say if anyone here lives where they spread salt in the winters. Make sure you do underbody washes at the car washes. It helps. Also fluid film everywhere. Ooorr you can do what I do. Dont drive your rust free cars in the winter and get your self a car you dont care if it rusts but still take care of it so you avoid these broken bolt issues. I've had really good luck building up metal with my tid welder and removing them with vise grips. I know it cant be used for every bolt but for bolts that you have decent access this sure works.
@briancorrigan53502 жыл бұрын
Induction heating bolt remover. If the bolts pass through, can you cut the tip with a tiny dremel. Also, back and forth with some bust rust of your choosing, rather than just keep trying to back it out. Florida is Hell's waiting room. CA is emission's nightmare and tuning is off the table now. Also, next time try some zinc-rich anti-seize. The zinc flakes prevents dissimilar metal corrosion.

They didn't mention Arizona at all. It's so rare to see rust here. I've only seen one Rusty vehicle in the past 5 years or so. It was a ranger I believe. My dad had a 1969 body of an old Dodge sitting on the lot in some shrubbery for about 10 years. Someone came by and gave him good money for. No rust after sitting in the rain that long.

I had to replace the oilpan on my 04 sienna and the bolts broke so easily and it wasn't anywhere near as rust as that. Extract them and then chase the threads or heli coil them.

What no Krown or Oil Gard where you are? I sprayed my 2008 Tacoma every fall, still looked new underneath after 10 years. Now I have a 2017 Tundra, and yes I undercoat it. Yes, I’m in the rust belt, London Ontario.
@denton80472 жыл бұрын
I rub some fluid film on the bolts on the oil pan/plugs/etc from a bucket. Sometimes I spray it, but it's easier to use a rag and get a thick application on the engine parts while avoiding belts and exhaust manifolds. 10mm bolts are just going to rust away, it's a pain and being between steel and alu makes it even worse often from galvanic corrosion, vibratight, or some type of additional sacrificial coating helps but needs to be redone every few years as the coating on the steel bolts weakens and wears off.

This happened to me on my 4Runner and I am in PA. Keep going South for rust free cars. Tennessee is good too.
