My parents never let me learn dialect, they worry it would affect my mandarin. Unfortunately, in army, I picked up the army hokkien which is very vulgar.

I not saying SG systematically curbed dialects. Just that there is at least one cohort of chinese Singaporean elderly citizens typically 60 years or older who grew up not familiar with speaking Mandarin despite being in Asia and despite being Chinese. I can prove this as I have seen many like this over the years. I just met such a man working as security guard today. I spoke to him in Mandarin he honestly say sorry, I don't know Mandarin. His colleague of another race also feel paiseh for him just like I am. Now China is world leading. So wherever the wind blows. Now sg seems to be allowing a bit dialect on state controlled mainstream media channels. Hokkien is actually Min Nan language as spoken in Taiwan. The proper name for Hokkien is called MinNan language..闽南语。 In other words, to the surprise of most singaporeans, Hokkien people is not wrong. But Hokkien language should actually be called min nan as that's the language spoken there. It's only in Singapore that the language is called Hokkien language because that's where most Hokkien people in Singapore originated from, from Hokkien province. To makey point more convincing, go ask any China people, is there a Hokkien language in China. They will say it's Min Nan

@@TinyCreatureHub Yours very good already for sg environment. I cannot be as good as you. Our languages many rojak already because many do not speak pure chinese, malay or india language in sg. The dialects were not well taught. In fact no school in sg taught dialects. All done by parents. So SG languages as unpure as rojak. This may offend some singaporeans but I feel that sg people generally speaking do not speak pure mandarin not pure English. Rojak with malay words is one thing, poor pronunciation is another. I can understand if singaporeans hate me for speaking the hard truth. But remember, i am a Singaporean also. There is no law to say a Singaporean must only praise Singapore. That would be north korea law. Criticism is tough love. English is king in sg. Only recently is there more interest in chinese language possibly due to rising affluence of China. Last time USA great mah. Now China greater mah.

"It's only in SG that the language is called Hokkien." People call it "Hokkien" in Indonesia and Malaysia too, and "Fukkien" in the Philippines. It is just as accurate to call it "Minnan" though, and maybe more precise.

But you don't my point which is the Original name for the language is Minnan because it's in the history of China . If you are raised to call A as B, then of course to you B is the right name. But the original correct proper name is A

Actually this is usually happen in their daily routine. To me it is not gangsterism. I m Malaysian from Sarawak. Even I my self use to say tiok pak li..LOL.
