I'm Puerto Rican and one thing I love about Vietnamese is the similarity of the 'n' at the end of our words... If we say "bien" in Spanish, sometimes it might sound more like "bieng." I noticed that's the case with Southern Vietnamese, too! "Nguyen" sounds like "Wing," like there's a 'g' after the ending 'n'

Annie, perhaps you could do a video showing similarities between Viet and Thai vocabulary. My Thai wife and I believe there 100s if not more words the two cultures shared. Thank you.

Thai and Vietnamese vocab are not related each other, because the one of Thai mostly originates in Indian ancient Pali vocab, whereas the one of Vietnamese in ancient Chinese. It is better to say that the two languages are related in terms of semantics but not in lexicon. Which means that the way they form sentences is similar and that both are mono syllabic languages.

@광동아재廣東大叔 first of all, I don't need a lesson from you on the origin of our beautiful and unique Viet language . The Viet- Muong language is part of the Mon- Khmer branch of the Austroasiatic family group. Thai is part of the Tai- Kadai family language group. Pali and ancient Chinese words used or are currently used in both languages due to borrowed loan words or forced assimilation, as in the case of Han on ancient Lac people in the Red River Delta over the millennium. Did you ever think long before the Tai tribes in southern China ( Au Lac/ Van Lang) settled in what is now Siam( Thailand) those tribes intermingled and mixed with ancient Lac ( Viet) ?? They shared languages, customs, traditions, folklore, and history. So before you discuss all the semantics and lexicon , Viet and Thai vocabulary have a lot in common than you realize. The Red River Delta was a melting pot of various people from lots of different family language groups, and tons of exchanges took place. So much is missing, and we still don't have all the pieces, and we may never get all the answers. Furthermore, Viet shared some Malay customs and traditions as well as some vocabulary. Remember, Malay people were originally from mainland SE Asia. Have a good day.

It's cheating. Me too, I will use the casual spoken foreigner vietnamese and drop the first letter of any word: _in chào,_ _ảm ơn ong,_ _ến đây_ etc...

And "khóc" becomes "hóc", ending "t" becomes "c", "v" at the beginning is pronounced like Southern "d"... Lazy speech like in many German accents. I wish someone created a true standard Vietnamese with distinct pronunciations for all letters (or clusters of letters) and all six tones. First it would be artificial, then it would be accepted more and more and at the end it would marginalize accents. Thus the same "High German" did.

I'm not sure if you're a native southern, but from observations, it seems you have oversimplified the pronunciations. For example, that's not how we pronounce "Nguyen" as in the surname. A quick search leads me to kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYHbo313eblnfK8 which is more correct for your reference.

Well, I dont know if she is a native southern or not but her pronunciations on these wordings are southerners.
