Peggy Lee is a true artist in every fiber of her being. I am sure she loved Mark Murphy 's rendition, another true artist. My favorite rendition is by Kurt singing the words of Ogden Nash to his own music and piano playing. Pure joy.

In those days they had a lot of feeling for those love songs , and that was beautifully song by Peggy Lee.and i say the people had more money in there pockets, WHY. they didn't have the debt they got today hanging over their heads.and this was in the 1960s, 30 years after the great depression and WW11.and today the Chinese got all the money in their pockets!

For me, it's the arrangement makes this great: Peggy's slow delivery, backed up by the lilting piano that just hovers, and last, but not least, filled in with the trumpet (muted?) taking you up and down with its notes. Very dramatic, even haunting. This version truly stands out from the rest. (And Peggy Lee isn't even my favorite vocalist, amongst those that have recorded this chestnut.)

It was a jazz piece that had its fans, but a lot of people that may have heard it here and there probably didn't *listen* to the song and realize how elegiac and painful it is. And of course, there are different versions of the song as well, done in different styles and tempos. So it means different things depending on who is singing and the arrangement.
@stynway597 жыл бұрын
It was written by Kurt Weill for a musical in the 40s. There are superb renditions by Billy Holiday, Sinatra, Sarah Vaughn, Julie London, Anita O'Day, Tony Bennett with Norah Jones..look around. It's one of Those Songs.
