I liked the original better but I thought this remake was good in its own way. It's a worthwhile alternative take. The ending is fine. I thought the first part of the film that was similar to the original was the part that paled in comparison

No Im with you two 100%. The original felt like a snuff film in disguise with two evil people killing other people who won't fight back because the plot made it that way. So to have it try to take itself super seriously with its ridiculous premise was in of itself ridiculous. And I explained that to someone on you're review of the original that claimed you didn't like it because you were denying the fact that you would react that same way if you guys were put in that danger. Which is pure tripe. Honestly, people like that makes me hate the original more.

@@sinistercinemareviews5420 I know. And to everyone who keeps saying: "that's the point of the film!" My response to them is this: If I wanted to watch something that warned me against Passivity, I can watch a certain 22 minute episode from the children's cartoon Gravity falls. And you know what? It would be more realistic than this so called "grim realistic horror masterpiece" was.

So let me get this straight, would you say you think the remake is more believable than the original?
@serenacelestineАй бұрын
Tbh it’s unrealistic to you but not necessarily to everyone. There’s lots of people that would unfortunately be that passive and it was a comment on Dutch culture in particular so probably doesn’t translate to US (etc) audiences that well. Some parts of it did make me roll my eyes, don’t get me wrong, but the focus on ‘we can’t be impolite’ can definitely be more of a thing depending on where you’re from.

On one hand if they didn´t change anything then I would say why do a remake at all. On the other hand the ending made the original. And it will stick with you and it (almost) doesn´t matter if you hate or love it. So bringing in James Watkins who did EDEN LAKE seems like the perfect fit for a remake since EDEN LAKE left you with a gut punch too. Then to cut the balls off the movie is strange. And it´s just great to know if I come here, that Jason and Kali have seen the original. So many big channels had to admit in their review not to have seen it. As expected. Such a shame. Not here. 😍

I do not care if there is an American remake of any foreign film for one simple reason: the remake doesn't delete the original film. The original film still exists. If you are angry at US remakes, you can always just ignore them and stick exclusively to the original. And, as you guys mentioned, people who don't watch subtitled films aren't going to change and start watching subtitled movies... They won't go and find the original, foreign version just because a remake didn't show up. There are some people, though, who DO watch foreign films but don't know certain foreign films exist UNTIL an American remake comes out and who will then go and check out the original version after the English-language one is released. So this remake of Speak No Evil will probably drive up views of the Danish one, if anything.

While i do feel the ending of the original is better in how it made me feel, you guys make a good point in how Mccavoy was more menacing as a villain. Dealing with a guy you know youd probably not be able to take would be a factor is how people react to him. This version reminds me of something like Straw Dogs
@jenvampvegas4571Ай бұрын
I think we had the same kind of audience reaction in the movie that you guys did because there was a lot of yelling at the screen and I really enjoyed that. And I had not seen the original when I saw the new one but I watched it after and I definitely preferred the remake. The first one was just hard to watch because I would have at least tried a little harder to fight back than that couple did. And while a lot in my crowd was disappointed that the husband wasn't fighting back as much, he did, as you said, a lot more in the remake than in the original. I thought the McAvoy version was very entertaining and the theater I was in also seemed to find it very entertaining. I would definitely recommend everyone go see it with a crowd if you like hearing commentary during a movie.

@ 14:41, But Bjørn does have a breaking point in the first movie. [Spoilers] When Patrick yells at Abel during the dance routine. Bjørn finally speaks out. Which eventually causes Patrick to cleverly lead him into the shed. Remember? Bjørn wakes up because Abel is crying, then Patrick walks by and the crying stops. Bjørn gets up because the TV is on and is pretty loud. When he turns the TV off he hears the faucet running. When he goes to shut the faucet off he sees the shed door ajar out the window, swinging open and shut in the wind. This is where he makes the big discovery, then finds Abel's body. This was clearly Patrick's way of fucking with him, punishing him for finally speaking out.

Hello Jason and Kali, thank you for your thoughts on Speak No Evil. The original version wrecked me to the point of tears, and I suppose I "bought" the ending ending based on culture and characterization, and maybe because I was so stunned by the story's so-called "resolution." I look forward to seeing the remake and doing a little compare/contrast. All my best to you and yours. (P.S. I need to catch up on your X Files discussions.) 😊

The original was the antithesis to the idea of heroism that has been reproduced so many times in popular culture. But in reality most people do not react with fight or flight in dangerous situations, most people become passive and "play dead" in situations like that.

Remake Patrick: "the original was way better! It was more nightmarish." Me: "True. But thats all it really was. A nightmare. An irrational fear that could only exist in someones thoughts. And could not exist in reality because of it being fundamentally ridiculous in nature. The remake, which had realism that could exist in reality, shows that when compared to the original."

I like some things about each movie more than the other, wish I could type those preferences into a.i. & get an amalgamation film. I don't need to put myself into the characters, like with these films, I can't imagine ever being a vegan, but I can still sympathize with the character. Some people's breaking point is debilitating to them rather than calling them to action. The very end of this new film was "Immaculate"🤪

I liked the original. I haven't seen the new one yet, but I suspect that the American version will make the couple fight back at some point rather than be as passive through the entire run of the movie. I'm not sure if the American couple can fully pull off the passivity of the first couple. Americans dont tend to have this issue over other cultures. I think part of the point with the first one is the husband was an insane wet blank pushover. But to be fair , I still like the slow burn of foreign films.

luckily not all the world is "American". In some parts of the planet being polite and friendly is still important. The point of the movie was the absurdity and the lack of preparation we have toward pure psychopats. I found myself in a similar (obviously much less dangerous) situation with my sons and the most disturbing thing was namely that we had not the most effective response to the situation.. because we could not understand it. Later we got it but it was already the next day. That's the point of the movie. Not "what you should do to save your kid" but "how you could be fooled because something beyond your imagination is happening".

[Spoilers] @ 5:17, I disagree. I think it takes a hard turn way before the 3rd Act. It becomes drastically different from the original starting at the scene right after Louise is flossing. Which is after their first meal. Because she immediately confronts her husband about her experience. The one thing that made the original so powerful was how no one communicated their discomfort, not even with their own families. Plus, there were several MAJOR scenes missing from this version. Like the bathroom scenes from the original, both of them. The car scene, with the radio. The sex scene. The dance scene. So many instances where the Dutch couple continued to push the Danish couple's boundaries, are all absent from this one. I think this director completely missed the point. They literally Speak Evil, right away.

I wasn’t a big fan of the ending in this one compared to the original. It’s just your typical happy ending. I think both are extreme: the original - in their inability to do much, this one - in its super hero willingness to do everything and kill everyone. In all honesty, I don’t think any of those scenarios would happen in real life. I also think these 2 alternative endings is a good depiction of the differences in the characters, culture, and mentality of northern Americans vs Northern Europeans.

Making a point by expressing it in the dumbest way possible only serves to undermine the point. No one cares about the historical context when they feel insulted by the stupidity they're having to watch on screen. If you want a good example of a horror movie that does a fantastic job addressing cultural and historical context, just watch Exhuma. I'm going to skip the American version, even with a different third act. I still have a sour taste in my mouth from the original.

I know that is my low self confidence and if someone was gaslighting me, telling me… “Oh, you don’t get it.” I would totally believe that. Even though, I’m valid in not liking a film. I didn’t like this film. I’m semi intelligent. I get films. Kind of, lol. I got this film. I just didn’t like it. There is nothing wrong with that. I’m still going to watch the remake. It’s interesting that they made one so soon after the original. I thought I was losing touch with reality for second when I found out that there was gonna be a remake. I was like, “Didn’t I just watch this film? What’s happening? Did I enter another dimension?” Anyways, thanks for the review as always.

Never heard of either, saw the original yesterday. For me: that babysitter, nope; go near my daughter, I turn into hurricane of death. (But I did "get" the film.) Now for the American remake, it may be good but, it is spineless for not doing what Hollywood is notorious for, race-swapping some of the characters; if they were brave, the villains would've been black, I mean why not? Diversity, equity and inclusion, right?
