The shocking thing about "Speak No Evil" is the depiction of our inability to defend ourselves against harassment: accepting minor everyday rudeness from others in the name of peaceful coexistence, politeness, good behaviour; and in more serious scenarios, showing how defenceless a civilised individual is against these inhuman manipulators The cast's performances and the overall narrative direction remain solid, successfully creating a deeply unsettling weekend experience.

Despite me finding him incredibly good looking, it’s so refreshing to see him take on very different roles and not play the pretty boy to tough guy roles only. I actually loved that about the original - that it dared to show characters who were genuinely weak, breakable and unable to handle a dangerous situation + the grim consequences of these traits. All Americans (regardless of gender and age) are able to kill themselves out of any situation in at least 50 various ways, so it's only natural a remake would adress such cultural differences.

When I first learned that a Hollywood version of "Speak No Evil" was coming and that James McAvoy would be in it, I thought he would play the weak man’s character, as both actors look quite similar. In my mind, Karl Urban was the choice for the villain.

Hahaha makes sense from a “Billy Butcher”😂. But I do kinda agree, more distinguished Macho man, than the skinnier guy that James McAvoy USED to be. James acting as psycho is pretty unique & seems almost untouchable.

I love this because it’s based on what could really happen. It’s really sad sometimes that either the host or the guest is the danger. Back in Ancient Greece there is a rule that the host and guest are supposed to treat each other with mutual respect when it comes to hospitality and it’s in many cultures as well. Right now though it’s 50% dangerous to ask/be asked for shelter for the night by a stranger. Or hitchhike or travel by yourself in another country.

@@user-mq4xp1gq3q You would be painfully surprised at how far people will go to not break social norms. There've been studies like one where they have participants sit in a room and fill out paperwork, fill it with 10-20 people all but one are actors, and slowly pump smoke into the room from under a door. The actors pretend not to see it but the real person almost always ended up staying when the actors said "Just calm down, we have to finish the paperwork.". Even though in direct danger, the fear of breaking some invisible social boundary is something that people will avoid doing even if it puts them in harms way. This includes rudely saying "Hey, you're a crazy person and I don't want to be in your house anymore.".
