It actually acts as a resonator in exactly the same way air in a port does. It boosts a single low frequency that is typically set to resonate at a frequency just below the lowest frequency the speaker would normally play by itself, thus extending how low it can play.. In saying that, I doubt it would extend the bass by much. In addition,its obviously very cheaply made. I highly doubt that speaker can play much below 100hz if I'm generous, and so there wouldn't be enough energy to really excite the passive radiator.

Speakers work by energizing the magnet and the cone sends out the audio waves when the speaker vibrates. Your ears pick up those audio waves and the brain translates what the audio is so you can understand it. A good speaker is a speaker that can vibrate and push air very well. Subwoofers do the same thing but on a bigger scale usually they just push more air. To make a speaker better a separate tweeter is always a welcome addition where higher pitched sounds can now be separated and be more noticeable.

This speaker shown is commonly referred to as a "white van scam speaker". The passive radiator is likely not even tuned properly, its more likely to be there to look pretty. The speakers in these units often can't handle much power and will blow easily. They sell under a variety of "brands" like davinci, waldorf etc. Some look like Bose too. There are probably at least 80 brand names used over the years. There often websites for these speakers too.

@@mikeissweet I've had several sets of multimedia speaker (granted they are Philips branded, so known for quality) that aren't much different. One full range driver in a small enclosure with a PR. However, the enclosures are significantly smaller, so greater effect on the PR, and either a longer excursion driver, or multiple drivers with a single matched PR. That said, with that soundbar, I doubt it's doing much (if anything), as you have said. but it does depend on the internal design of the box. I have a custom-built boombox made out of cardboard, and the internal chamber has a LOT less volume than the outside of the box would lead you to believe.

@@jacoba7293 The active speaker causes the air in box to vibrate, and the passive radiator turns that vibration into directional sound waves, increasing the bass tone of the audio. A second active speaker would not have that affect, it would just make the tinny, over compressed MP3s sound louder. All of this is irrelevant because you're listening to MP3s, which is a compression technology that throws away a lot of the deeper tones of the music, so you then need to replace those missing tones with fake bass tones using stupid stuff like this. And that's not how the music should sound. Play a CD on a decent quality setup and compare it to an MP3 on the same setup, and on one of these, and you'll notice a significant difference in sound quality. Everyone got conned by the convenience of MP3s and forgot that the idea was the enjoy hearing the richness of the music. But that's ok because modern music deserves to be MP3'd to death.

It's built that way to deceive you the buyer. The weights are not there to stop any resonance they are there to give weight to the speakers so it will feel as if it is made of quality materials. This person wanted to save some money either bought this in a parking lot from a guy selling them out his trunk or he purchased it from a guy at a swap meet (parking lot) selling them out of his trunk. Anyone looking for a deal on a soundbar that on a budget buy a quality one second hand from craigslist. Just make sure it works first. I bought a used Bose soundbar Soundtouch 300 that lasted me 3 years no issues then I gave it to a friend of mine when I upgraded last year. It's still working great.

You've got a speaker on the far left end of the bar, you would need another actual speaker on the other end (right) in order to get stereo sound. That little driver in the left would never be able to move another tiny passive radiator enough to equal the sound coming out of the actual speaker. You'll never see a legitimate company put a speaker on the left, passive radiator on the right as a full stereo setup.

It's a passive radiator. It works similarly to a port. Your speaker box is sealed and this uses the internal pressure to drive the passive radiator. In my opinion it is a good way of providing a bit of a cleaner sound to a cheaper woofer. Ported speakers require a bit more tuning which would have to be taken into the esthetic of the box.

An infinite baffle is a speaker OR subwoofer without a box that resonates off the interior of vehicle or walls of room inside of house. This is more like a passive radiator set up but usually there are weights on the passive woofer to equal put the bass the other woofer is pushing out so they don't cancel eachother out. This is a horse shit set up either way lmao. My surround sound has rear speakers for surround sound and front middle speaker and then I have 4 12s hooked up to my front speakers and shehits pretty good lol. If I want some real bass though I plug in my power inverter to my amp plugged into my 4 12 inch car subs. Shit gets real at tha point lol. My neighbors don't like me but fuck em I lived here first lol I shake their siding on their house from the bass coming out of my house....oops

@cooltheory NYC here. Probably still happening in places. Back in 2018, a guy approached me in the parking lot of a home depot and offered me a surround sound system. Took a look at it, and he wanted like $4k for it. Kept saying no, and he kept dropping the price until he got to $250. Didn't take it, and looked up the brand when I got home, it was a knockoff brand sold on ebay with the specific intention of ripping people off. 2022, I was approached by the same guy in the same parking lot trying to push a $2k sound bar. That time I told him to fuck right off lol

😂 I was at a car wash in Vancouver last week and some guy pulled up on me with $3500 speakers sent to him by accident from Amazon the would let me have for $1500 😂 I said no and his price eventually went down to $200 😂 still said no and he got quite upset. OK, so SONO2 is a ripoff of SONOS. Sonos don't do this, they actually put in the right amount of speakers to get the job done. So not all "companies who make soundbars" are robbing you. Their explanation for that "decoy" would be that it's a passive radiator. However, if the enclosure is internally air sealed between each driver, that ain't going to radiate anything at all. (Yes, I have a literal science degree in audio tech.)
