I fabricated a new voice coil, spider and re-coned the 6" speaker. Seems to be working well based on a short test before allowing the glue to dry. More testing will be needed to ensure all is well.
I used a 13mm socket as my former; perfect .76" diameter.
I made the form factor out of copy paper, 1/2" wide by 5" length, coated w/ a glue mixture of 1 part water, 4 parts wood glue and ~2 parts alcohol. I sprayed the form with clear lacquer inside and outside and applied a baby power when it was a touch tacky then sanded the inside and outside of the form before applying the magnet wire.
I completed the coil by wrapping 40 turns of magnet wire using a little superglue along the way and sanded the coil after the superglue dried making sure not to remove the enamel coating.
The spider was cut/made from a playing card and painted black and then the voice coil was glued to the spider and the new speaker cone was attached.
Additional information on creating a voice coil, spider, etc.: • Chanticleer 2D570 - Bu...
Hope you find this information helpful.

Hi Don - Whether I'd go as deep as you do into your restorations... I've learned a lot from watching yours. I like that you keep them just long enough to do what is needed to know. There are some really smart guys out there doing repair and such, but I just can't watch a video that goes up to an hour to see everything live, with no editing. Thanks again for your videos Don! -- Atco

Atco, thank you! Some of my videos in the past have been a little too long for my liking too. Glad some of the techniques/tips have added value and helped you and others following along. I'm always trying new things and sharing what works and sometimes what doesn't go as planned. Thanks again for your kind words and following my projects. Best, Don

Outstanding Don. Two questions If I may ask. What did you use for the spider and where do you get the cone's ?. All the best. Bobby

Bobby, I purchased the cones years back from: www.electronix.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=Speaker+cones&search_in_description=1&osCsid=r1dvc1ule525i7cth4bvr3gmh3&x=0&y=0 I'm not sure they still have all of the sizes, but you can always cut back a larger cone and make it work. I made the spider from a playing card (new deck) and painted it black. I added all of the steps I followed in the description of the video for future reference. Thanks again for following my projects. Best, Don

Hi Don, You are a patient man my friend, but it results in some great restorations! I've gotten some great tips from your videos. but I do have a question though. Did you take the speaker cone from another speaker or have you found a secret source for smaller cones?
@RestoreOldRadios
@RestoreOldRadios 8 жыл бұрын
Jim, thanks for your positive words. A few years back, I bought my speaker cones from: www.electronix.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=Speaker+cones&search_in_description=1&osCsid=r1dvc1ule525i7cth4bvr3gmh3&x=0&y=0 I think they are someone limited now on various sizes, but you may want to inquire directly with them and see if they still have access to others not listed. I've used larger sizes in the past and cut them down to size. Hope this helps and thanks again for watching and following along. Best, Don

+RestoreOldRadios The problem with foam is it desintegrates over time, and the heat in a tube unit may accelerate this process. Also it is a bit more heavy than the classic paper.

isn't there supposed to be a slight gap between the inside of the form and pole piece? I don't understand your need to lacquer and powder it. I'm doing research before building myself some voice coils.
@RestoreOldRadios

+Are you 'avin a laugh? Is he 'avin a laugh? Yes, you are correct. There has to be a gap ( I typically use 35mm film as a shim) between the center pole piece and the voice coil. I used the powder to ensure any remaining glue was dry and the lacquer for added smoothness, but neither were necessary. I just built a new voice coil and used aluminum for my coil former. One mistake, I should have left a small gap in the former to minimize any impact to the magnetic field. Here's the video for reference: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jl6al2ypo9Z4esk Keep me posted on your progress, I'm always learning from others. Best, Don

thanks for the link. haven't watched that one before. I'm still struggling to source material for a former, either aluminum or kapton. I can find sticky back kapton tape but I don't know if that's the right stuff to use. I may resort to paper, even then it won't be nomex.

the form is likely to be something like 1.005" ID for a 1" coil. not sure of length yet.
