So I have an antiquated system that doesn’t match up. The stereo is SoundDesign, model 6863 BKM and a pair of Panasonic model # SB - AK44 speakers. Not sure how to hook this up? The stereo has a record player on top so I can play vinyl. Please help as I have an old album that I really want to hear.

Sounds like you think having a PVC cover on wire makes it shielded. Shielding is an internal wrap that provides an protective ground to prevent interference. I know you know this, just wasn't said.

Thanks! In the case where you can't tell, choose one side and mark it with a marker. Assuming you can see any difference between the two. If you can't tell at all, I would separate them and then mark them with a permanent marker.

The wires aren't physically different so it won't matter which side you use as long as it is consistent from end to end.

If you combine two of the sets on either end ( making sure your consistent) you can increase your wire gauge. I would just make sure you label the wire ends with positive and negative and that needs to be identical on the amp end as well.

How To Connect Speakers to Receiver with Wire-Ultimate Solution A cable used to connect amplifiers to speakers is known as speaker wire. The audio is amplified and sent to the speakers via this cable. It has a copper core that can be stranded or solid, as well as a PVC jacket that protects the core from interference and other external influences. This blog is for those people who online often ask how to connect speakers to receiver with wire. The core is usually stranded, which means it’s made up of a collection of tiny wires that are twisted together to make a larger (thicker) conductor. There are a couple of reasons behind this. For starters, a solid conductor makes the wire far less flexible, making installation more difficult. More importantly, solid conductors have a greater skin effect, which increases resistance and power losses, both of which we want to minimize. Terminals of the speaker Speaker cables are connected to terminals on the back of most stereo receivers, amplifiers, and conventional speakers. Spring clips or binding posts are the two types of terminals available. For simple identification, these terminals are almost always color-coded: the positive terminal (+) is usually red, while the negative terminal (-) is usually black. Some speakers are bi-wire capable, meaning the red and black terminals are sold in pairs for a total of four connections. Connectors Most speaker cables are bare that’s why you’ll need a wire stripper to expose the strands at the ends. Whether your equipment uses spring clips or binding posts, tightly twist the bare wire strands so that they stay together as a clean single twisted wire. Few questions for exposed wire. Does the exposed wire have to go all the way through the hole and out.the other side? When I tighten the post...do I tighten it over the exposed wire or the insulation? Lastly, when I put the exposed wire through the hole...and its a little long on the other end...do I wrap the excess amount around the post before I tighten or just cut it?

If you can cut it the same length of the hole that is good. It should be fine if a little is poking out the other side. Some guys do wrap the excess around the pillar to make it harder to come loose. What you want to avoid is any stray wire making contact with anything else besides the binding post. Especially if it is conductive.

You want the wire directly touching the post and little to no insulation touching it but keeping in mind you don't want to cut the insulation too much as to accidentally have the wire come into contact with anything else. If the distance from the receiver is different for each speaker would it be worth it to use different gauge wire for each one, for example one speaker is 5 ft. from the receiver, and the other one is 12 ft. away would using different gauge wire be practical or not? Glad it was helpful! You are probably fine the way you have it. I think if you were worried about it, I would use the same gauge but make them both the same length (assuming it won't have to just be a coil of 7 ft next to the speaker? If it can snake a bit more then I would do that). Gauge size probably won't make any difference assuming you are using at least 16 gauge wire. I am personally using some belden 10 gauge wire to go about 10 ft which is completely overkill.

I have 3 motorola 40 year old speakers in a box that work great with my stereo. I would like to add red & black wires to the seven strand leads. If I disconnect my Sennheiser wireless headphones from Wiistar digital audio decoder to analog & plug in the speakers in with red & black leads attached will this work ok? The headphone is plugged into the wall. Do I need & adapter or something else attached to my old speakers to make it work with my tv?

You need a 5.1 receiver, ideally one with HDMI connections on the back. Typically you go, Roku/DVD player - receiver - Tv. So the receiver in the middle pulls the sound and then passes video along to the TV. You would need HDMI cables to hook up any inputs and then to the TV and then speaker wire from the receiver to the speakers. In your case I am assuming there is wire already run to the in wall speakers and there is a wall plate somewhere with speaker wire connectors to connect to the already connected speakers.

I would go ahead and try changing it and see what happens. You won't hurt the speakers having them out of phase it should just sound weird. I have made the mistake many times so good to try. One thing to try as well is to confirm that you are connecting to the right speaker. Un hook all the other speakers on the amp side if you are still getting the out of phase error. Some times we start looking at the wrong connection cause it's hard to see and confusing. I've done that too.

Either can be excellent but they have trade offs. If it's all in one you don't have the same flexibility but it could be a really great value and simple to use. If the self powered speakers die then you're out the whole system until it's fixed or replaced.

I know those speakers have the holes for banana plugs. Are the banana plugs to big to fit in the hole or the case to big and there isn't enough clearance around the posts? Did you buy them in the US or outside the US? Some countries require caps that cover the banana plug holes on the posts.

It looks like for the front left and right, you can use the bare wire or banana plugs. For the others, you can see if pins will work. What gauge wire do you have?

bear in mind in most European countries, the standard mains power receptacle will physically accept banana and even US-style "double banana" plugs leading to a risk of electrical shock. For this reason, throughout the European Union, the sale of audio amplifiers and loudspeakers that accept banana plugs is prohibited as is the sale of loudspeaker leads terminated in such plugs. The UK was included in the prohibition even though such mains sockets were not used there.

Ah, yeah, those are called spring clips. You should use bare wire. Typically you would want to use 16 gauge wire for that since it can be harder to thread. Or you can use pin connectors. They are similar to banana plugs but have a small pin instead. I have used them in the past but the wire tends to wiggle free. Easiest, cheapest is bare wire.

Just push the tab down and insert the bare wire in. You may need to experiment with the length of exposed wire to insert in but I would start with about a half inch.

Yeah, in my experience they were the least reliable. The wire would eventually slip out if they got moved or re inserted. Better off with bare wire if you can.

No, that sounds about right. As long as they are making a good connection (not loose and barely touching sides) then it should be fine. Some of mine fit the same way.

Nice video. The speaker insertion on my mini-shelf stero is a square design with springs behind the clip. Didn't see this style in your video. I have 14 awg wire. It's bare copper wire no connectors on the end. think it started off as a 25 ft. roll. After I had the wires cut to length and twisted the copper strands together the wire was almost to thick for the insertion hole on the stero. Would you suggest I goto 18 awg speaker wire or use crimp on connectors for the 14 awg wire I have now?

Good question! I have used pin connectors but they always seemed to loosen over time. Bare wire is good, might go with a 16 awg. I would avoid 18 if you can.

I googled "speaker wire to xlr adapter" on Amazon and found some options. I noticed that quite a few people were saying it didn't work but I'm not sure of their scenario. Male vs female xlr and which side needs the XLR vs speaker wire. Not sure if that helps.

There can be two benefits. Some times it can be cheaper (not always) and you can do custom lengths. If you have a budget for it you can go for the pre made wires.

As long as the speakers are self powered (like studio monitors) or the TV has speaker terminals (which is not normal). Likely if you are using regular speakers then you would need a receiver.

don't know if you're still answering questions or not, but I have a rather stupid question for myself lol. Say I bought a 100 ft of Speaker Wire, but I only need 50 for the connection. Can I cut it half (two 50ft speaker wires out of one 100ft speaker wire) and with stripping it on both ends, can I use the two wires the exact same? or would it destroy the wire itself if I cut the copper between them, even if I strip new ends and beginnings on each side?

Still answering questions! If you are cutting the wire across both the positive and negative cables then yes. That is absolutely how speaker wire works. If you are trying to double your length by separating the two cables then no. If I have a hundred feet of wire and I have two speakers I need to hook up that are both 50 feet away then cutting the wire in half is exactly what you would do. If you are actually in a scenario where your speaker is 50 feet away I would use 12 gauge wire or larger (like 10 awg).

But, you can probably get by with smaller wire. It will work, it just may not be the most optimal.

Question: I have a Jeep Wrangler with a subwoofer in the back with blinding posts. I like taking my top off and so there's a higher chance of rain getting in. Is there a way to "waterproof" the connection at the blinding posts? Maybe use some black electrical tape?

Are we talking if it starts raining briefly on a sunny day? Or do you regularly go out while it's raining? If just the first one then I'm guessing just some electrical tape would work. I would make sure you've covered both sides of the connection and make sure there isn't a place for the water to collect. If I was extra cautious I might add some air tight housing over the connection as well.

Nope, as long as it's not blocking the path and there is a good metal to metal connection it should be fine.

I am a complete moron when it comes to electronics. I used masking tape to label all wires as I pulled them out from my old receiver and of course when I tried wiring the new receiver, all of the wires were stuck together in a huge ball of masking tape so I doubt I got all the wires correctly installed. I ended up using a 9V battery to get the "popping" sound and make sure the correct wires were connected to the right posts. Now I am not sure if the polarity is correct as all of the wires were black. I've seen where you watch the speaker go in or out to determine correct polarity but I don't want to remove the cover to do that test. Any ideas???

Alot of receivers have a speaker setup option in the menu. It will play sound through each speaker and often check for polarity. If it came with a setup mic there is a good chance it has this feature.

Bluetooth speakers typically are wireless devices. You need to have speaker terminals on both sides (speaker and amp) to make the connection. Either the speaker has Bluetooth connection and a built in amp (power) or it's a passive speaker and it needs an amp. Some receivers have both Bluetooth and speaker terminals.

Not a stupid question. Most of the time they are too big to put in the spring clip posts. They do make a pin connector type and that is more convenient but also I have found that the pin connector type is really unreliable. I just used the cheap kind and that has been my experience.

Speaker wire should look identical on both ends of the cable: beginning and end of the cable. Almost all speakers for home use will accept bare wire connections (self powered and pro audio speakers being the most common exceptions). In the video I go over the most common connectors and connections.

Im thinking of making of making my own diy premium speaker wire for a SVS 5.1 system. Can I twist two 14 gauge wire for the neg and two 14 guage for the positive. I plan on using Monoprice Access Series 14AWG CL2 Rated 4-Conductor Speaker Wire. Will this be to thick to run to my satellite speakers? The longest run is 20' to 25' (rears) 3' to 6' (fronts). Absolutely, it would be thick enough. To be fair, you could use one positive and negative of 14 AWG to go all the lengths you mentioned. In the thumbnail of the video there is some grey speaker wire. That wire is 4 conductor 14 AWG wire that I combined together (red and red, black and black) to make a single connection wire (I use that for my front speakers that are only about 12 foot runs). It turns out to be about 11 AWG wire. I like it because it makes me feel confident about things working but functionally, all you need would be the 14 AWG. Possibly, depends on if that Pioneer has pre outs. Should be RCA connections on the back of the receiver. You could Google the model and look up the old manual.

I inherited my dad's Fisher quadraphonic from 1974. On the back of the receiver it's just standard Flathead screws the red wire would connect to the silver screw heads and the black wire connects to the dark gray screw heads. The speakers are just like spring plugs we just push the button and the hole appears. I want to know the best way to connect speaker wires to the stereo is dad is unable to help me.

That sounds like an awesome kit! Your best bet in this case would be to use bare wire. On the receiver side I would make a hook with the wire, it's best that the hook go in the direction that the screw turns. For the spring clips on the speakers, I would give the ends a twist and insert. There isn't a standard hole size for spring clips so I can't recommend a specific connector for them. The wire will be a good connection as long as you're not unplugging and connecting the wire again a bunch.

You wont be able to use the banana plugs on the reciever but you could use pins. I don't really care for pins as I have found they tend to come loose. You could get some bare wire and do banana plugs to the speakers and bare wire on the other side of the wire to the receiver. That is what I would probably do. Bare wire is maybe the best connection (no audible difference) from a conductivity view point but it's not very convenient.

Thanks for commenting! I don't know that I would agree with that but full potential is a wide margin. That could still be valid. I think I would point to poor acoustic setup and treatment as most important but to get full potential I might see that. I land more on the medium to not bottom quality wire. Nothing that costs hundreds of dollars but I do have lots of Blue Jeans cable which I find as a good value.

People always talk about sound quality or lack of when referring to HT cables (me included). In my experience, quality cables actually benefit the sound of the room. After auditioning three separate AVR's, the same ambient sound of the room was still present! It was only on the third occasion when I finally purchased shielded cables that the noise floor in my small room finally came down to satisfactory levels. Cables can act as antennas for attracting RF, and the longer the cable, the better the antenna. Probably explains why when I used to disconnect my heights and surrounds within 10 minutes, the faint background signal noise (RF/EMI) within my small room used to disappear/dissipate. Even though I'm now using a high-performance arcam avr20 with matching power amps at the time, most of my testing came from when I was auditioning Japanese mid-price AVR's Never mind the expensive cost, do you really think I would go through all this work not once, not twice, but on the third time to get it right... hello, my speakers have a little color coated cap inside then wire terminal that prevents me from plugging in my banana plug, however, it otherwise appears to be fully capable of accepting a banana plug input. So do I need to remove these caps? I tried a little and they were quite tightly on there, so I figured I would ask first. Also I am working with the celestion F1 speakers. Hey, sorry for the delay, many products that get shipped globally come with those extra inserts in the banana plug hole. I used a dry wall screw and a drill and drilled just a little ways in and then you can pull those caps out. If it is what I think it is.

Are they the spring clip kind? You push down the tab so you can insert the wire or pin? If so, on newer speakers that usually means they are on the cheaper side. If they are older then it was a little more common. As long as they are making a good connection (speakers aren't cutting out or something and the wire isn't falling out) and you like the sound then that is all that matters. Banana plugs just look nice to me and are convenient.

Thanks! Good question, no, they are not. They do look similar but the 3.5 (and the larger 1/4) jack have rings on them that can carry stereo information. Banana plugs don't have that. They are also a different size with the banana plugs having a spring like tension to them to keep them inserted in the binding post. Thanks for asking the question!

They are all the same standard size. To remove the covers ( plastic bits that fit in the center) I used a dry wall screw and screwed it in the the plastic but, just a little, and then used that as a handle to pull it out. You can look that up on KZbin, that's where I found the idea. There might be better ways of doing that.

Yes, you can use any color and combine wires together. The trick is to make sure that it's connected the same at both ends of the wire. The negative on the amp is the same as the negative on the speaker and so on.

Sure! I think the normal way to do this would be to plug the Firestick into the HDMI in on the receiver. That should give audio and video at the same time to the receiver. It should then pass the video up to the TV through the HDMI out. Maybe you have already tried that or you have an older receiver?

@@jean-pierredoucet8328 if they aren't labeled then you will have test each combo and then label each pair. You need to connect two wires, one to each binding post for one speaker. I use label zip ties and write the location for the speaker. Test connecting the speakers at low volumes using an amplifier, stereo or home theater receiver.
