Thanks so much for reviewing these. Its hard to get reviews of the sort of kit I generally prefer from mainline reviewers who would have the ability to make comparisons with gear from larger name makers. I tend to gravitate toward full range driver designs, so I would be interested in seeing reviews from you guys for things like the Pearl Audio Sibelius or even other Lii Audio units, like the S-10 Glories or the little F6 Emmos or the little teardrop shaped spiral cabinets they make. I'm also an open baffle enthusiast, so your previous review for the Decware Zen Master speakers using the Lii F15 drivers was fantastic, so I would be interested in hearing reviews other open baffle designs, such as the Lii Audio Liionaidas (or whatever they're calling them now; they have a basic and a heavy duty one that are the same thing and you get to choose your full range driver to couple with a W15 woofer on the bottom), or things from places like Pure Audio Project, Spatial, or where ever else you can find something that interests you enough to want to do a review for. Just my 2 cents worth for the future, but generally speaking, you want to review it, I want to see the review. Keep up the good work.

Well, you guys know that I'm far from a recovering audiophile. In fact, I'm in end-stage audiophilia wallowing in the Magnepan 1.7i gutter with big-ass solid state monoblocks and a PAIR of REL T9/xs (because, of course.....). Having said this, I am absolutely more excited about this review than any Andrew has done to date. I love Decware amps (although I've only heard them on DeVore speakers - which I admire greatly. John DeVore and I share a fondness for vintage Spicas.). Anyhow, single-driver speakers on low wattage tube amps get me going. (Sorry, I know Andrew loves his horns. I'm just not a horn guy.) Now, I HAVE to hear the S10 on Decwares.

I wonder why these speakers have to be so large and so expensive. Andrew basically described the experience I had with the Audax AM 21 speakers designed by Yves Dodeman (the plans are open source). As somebody who uses (and sells) different Audio Nirvana full range speakers I would truly love to know what kind of placement alleviates the directionality of these speakers. With full ranges of this size that's a compromise you just have to live with, or so I thought. If sitting to the right you don't want to hear everything from the right speaker the only thing you can do - in my experience - is to toe the speakers in severely so that you see the outer sides of the cabinets.
@jeremyr7222 жыл бұрын
I ADORE the look of those s-10’s. And your description of their sound is very similar to what I hear with my own highly sensitive 10 inch full range driver: the Zu Dirty Weekend. Unfortunately I simply don’t have the space for those massive s10’s. Also, I found that while I technically could force bass out of them with tone controls, the cabinets rattled. Adding a stereo pair of subs absolutely revolutionized my enjoyment of my system

I had a pair of Lii Audio Crystal 10 drivers ( earlier model with a Trumpet logo stamp on the cone and tapered plastic plug, bought in early 2020) Have tried it in many ways, OBs and cabinets but it sound the best in the cabinet design by Ole Lii, the oblong shape tower speaker box that you have in your video. Never know it had such an extended low bass frequency until you have it on the oblong cabinets. (Built my oblong tower speaker base on Lii Audio's speaker drawing) Later found out that Ole Lii designed this oblong tower cabinet specifically for the Crystal 10 back then to remove any standing wave inside the cabinet. What a great speaker with the right cabinets. It takes a long time to break in......gets better by the days.......search for a good pair of speaker to match my merely 2 W tube amp is over. Oh by the way the Crystal 10 was the FlagShip back then as I was told and all the later design were base on it. Also found out that Crystal 10 was not designed to be used with OB.

Great review of what looks to be a stunning speaker. The cabinetry reminds me of classic old school designs - almost Art Deco in a sense. There is something appealing to single driver speakers that I find quite attractive for listening to music. Like another layer of fog has been removed, revealing the music in all its glory.
@Projacked12 жыл бұрын
That's the most beautiful driver I have ever seen. Spot on with placement, drivers like this is a different ball-game right? I can hear differences with moving in milimeters with my Tannoys.
@Projacked12 жыл бұрын
Too narrow=laserbeam top-end in the centre Too wide=loss of centre coherence Notice how volume differences between L/R is your very first CRUCIAL step in placement (with dual concentric drivers). Forward /backward volume difference needs to be accurate or forget it. You will end up in a rabbit hole. Also diffusion (@ the 1st reflection) on the ceiling is great tip to attack first! Smoooooth!
@Justwantahover2 жыл бұрын
14:40 I have that problem with single driver speakers. Move your head an inch each way and it's just the left speaker, then just the right speaker. I solved that by increasing top end a bit and then angling the drivers upwards a lot (for a semi omni directional sound). The intense beam of treble form FR drivers (that is normally an ear full) passes over your head when angled upwards. The highs reflect from the walls and ceiling to add treble to the off axis sound. With the extra treble fed into the drivers you can't listen to them straight on, but you never do very much with the steeply angled driver placement. The sound is more airy too. The only way I could solve the problem. FR drivers are notoriously directional!

Great review! I was pleasantly surprised to see these speakers. I have the Decware UFO too, and use a 8" wideband crossover-less speaker. It also does the whole "on-off" switch when it comes to getting it right. Very VERY small differences in position make all the difference.
@edd27712 жыл бұрын
Like a lot of folks I have some high frequency hearing loss, and as I result prefer to listen at lower volume levels. I also lean toward jazz and acoustic oriented pop/rock. Would you concur that the fact that these start to roll off on the high end (which I couldn’t hear even if it was there) and do well at low volumes make them a good pairing for someone in my shoes? Or do I need something that emphasizes the highs?
@andrewrobinsonreviews2 жыл бұрын
If you have high frequency hearing loss and like a "brighter" sound, these may not be ideal for they're not bright. Kristi has notable high frequency hearing damage which keeps her from hearing any frequencies above 15kHz (it may have been 13kHz) and she loved these speakers and thought they were intelligible, detailed and good for all music.
@craigmyers64492 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed - hope you don't mind if I jump in - I own a pair of these speakers and I am in my late 50's - so I assume I have also lost anything above about 13-15kHz - and I love them. I read somewhere once oddly - that people with deteriorate hearing prefer a less bright speaker - not logical - but may be accurate. I run them with a 8 watt tube amp and can listen for hours without any fatigue - and the higher frequencies I find very satisfying. I listen to all music from be-bop to punk rock.
@edd27712 жыл бұрын
@@craigmyers6449 interesting thank you. We are about the same age, but I’m actually at the point where I use hearing aids at work because high women’s voices don’t come across clearly and when working remote and relying on computer sound it doesn’t work for me. Kristi tried to chime in but YT deleted her remarks. She said: @Ed D I found these fairly good with respect to dialogue clarity. For me, speakers that don't have as much low end bass tend to be better for me as well. I'm sure that has something to do with how a lack of too much bass affects the other frequencies which in turn makes dialogue seem more intelligible. For the record, this has been one of the best solutions I've experienced - bit.ly/3gblAPH in that area.

Those look beautiful in your newly designed room!!! When you do a review, what determines if you are going to hook up a new set of speakers to an A/V receiver such as your Onkyo RZ50, or to a dedicated amp? I'm still a little confused on if I "need" an amp, or just continue using my A/V receiver. Maybe this is a discussion for a different thread, but as I was watching, I wondered if hooking them up to the Onkyo (or another A/V receiver) would have yielded any different sound as you went through your tests. Following…I really appreciate this question; a side-by-side comparison is about the first thing I thought of when I began watching this review.

Thanks Andrew and Kristi! Glad you are happy as that is the good place. They are beautiful speakers but a tad large for my space and I doubt they would match my 8 Klipsch siblings so I will stick to that for now. One of my subs konked out so I now have a pair Rel HT-1508's.

They are large and in charge for sure, but they can sound positively delicate too! Thanks for tuning in, it's always nice to hear from you Lonnie!

Indeed, the cabinets are really beautiful. And they fit perfectly in your new home environment. They overall remind me of an upright art deco phonograph from the late 1920's/early 1930's. Are you going to keep them?

For the time being, they are going to be hanging around. I love them!

Wow, I can't belive that I'm about to say this about 4000 dollars, but each time I saw images of the speakers in your new house, I was expecting them to have a price tag of something around 8,000 dollars or higher. When I saw the actual price I said, " Whaoh, not bad." Which prompted a double take. 3900 dollars is a lot of money, but it does feel attainable, I quess. The other suprise, for me, is that I like the way they look. To me, it seems that when speakers begin getting up there in price, companies try to make them look exotic, which I find a bit offputting. I'm not saying that I wan't the standard black boxes, I just don't like art pieces either. These, though, I like. Thougn, I'm assuming that they don't have grills. I think I'm changing into a grill guy. I use to like grills off, but not any more Now, your comments about bass response sparked a slghtly unrelated question. A lot of 2 channel gear don't have provisions for bass management. How crucial is that, particularly where bookshelf speakers are concerned? I know you can always add subs to play low frequencies, but is preventing speakers from trying to produce notes beyond their capabilities something not to worry about ?
@KristiWright2 жыл бұрын
I think they'd be even more affordable if shipping wasn't so expensive right now. I agree, they look more expensive than they are for sure!
@andrewrobinsonreviews2 жыл бұрын
That's $3900 shipped within the continental US too! As for grilles, there are none that I am aware of. If you look at the close up shots, there is a large ring around the driver that I think is the culprit when it comes to curbing some of this speaker's dispersion. I say this because grilles may only add to the problem? As for bass management. True, a lot of two channel products, despite having preamp outs for say a sub, lack adjustable crossovers, which keeps the "load" on the speaker even when using a sub, which is not ideal. I don't find it to be too big an issue, but if a product can allow for some crossover adjustment I consider it a bonus or feather in that product's hat vs one that doesn't have it.

From a purely aesthetic perspective, I think the s10s look fantastic in your room gloss finish and all. I love a modern look and have nothing against a matte finish but here matte finish might make them look less refined and bulky. I think the gloss looks great in your room.

Any chance chance of reviews of higher powered Decware Amps? Thank you for starting to review open baffle speakers. Waiting for Spatial Audio review. No pressure ;)

Are these not coaxial drivers? If so, how do they differ?

They are full range drivers. They use a whizzer cone for high end extension.

Would you happen to be reviewing Polk R700s anytime soon? I’ll most likely buy them anyways but it would be nice to hear you give a hands on review of them
@KristiWright2 жыл бұрын
I think that would make an interesting review especially in our larger space. We covered the R200s already if you check out the HiFi/Review playlists. I'm guessing the towers are very good.

@@KristiWright thanks for the reply! And yes I loved your review of those so the R700s being in the same series are most likely a safe and wise choice.
@KristiWright2 жыл бұрын
@@jeremyball116 In a large space like ours, I would agree. Small to medium size rooms I think the R200s are freaking awesome but you know with a sub in this space, they might still be great. We don't have them anymore so we wont be able to test that theory.

I built a pair of Zen15M and augmented them with a pair of REL subs (but waiting for my Decware amp, haha) and couldn't be happier. Thanks for the comparison.

Dear Mrs. Robinson, YES!!! You did shock me and almost gave me a heart attack when you compared them to the Focal Utopia. Please do not do that in the future, have mercy on my heart. LoL... Love your review like always and loving the new environment too. :-)

I see a lot of expensive gear and just really nice style from Andrew and Christy. Excellent presentations and lots of hard work seem to be evident on the channel so it's easy to watch reviews for stuff that cost 5k. Kudos to them for the work they are putting in.

Great taste in the decor and wonderful presentation. You guys put so much work into your channel and it really shows. I was thrown by the close up and the edges, however. The whole video was about how great the speaker was and yet a simple view showed a manufacturing problem that anyone who owns a lot of speakers does not want to see on their 4k investment It's the trade off for affordable Chinese made materials...We all know this. I don't normally even bother to comment on videos but this one was so well done and so such excellent thought and detail went into the presentation that I thought it deserved an honest response . Great review.
