From Jay's mouth to our ears comes this gospel (good news) of the importance of set up. gear synergy and the gear itself. Thank you Jay for your excellence guide. My own preference for great imaging and soundstage prioritizes quality Coaxial or point source speakers i.e KEF, MoFi, Fyne Audio; tube preamp; dark background powerful class AB amp i.e. Hegel; lastly but not least a fantastic dac that delivers world class micro details and retains lushness and body or the music. By far the most important is the quality of the recording itself, if it doesn't have great soundstage and imaging within the recording you will never hear it. Basically I'm a disciple (follower) of the exact guidance you've given us.

One thing audiophiles sometimes overlook in their quest for perfect sound is tweaking the wrong "system"-their own ears. That's where a little professional help can go a long way. Getting ear irrigation done by an audiophile-friendly audiologist (yes, they exist!) can work wonders. Think of it as a personal "system refresh." Suddenly, the soundstage feels wider, there's air between the instruments, and the music just breathes better. It's like upgrading your speakers without spending a dime on hardware-just your very own organic listening gear.

Great Job describing Soundstage and imaging. The only thing that I would critique in your description is: There is depth to the closest edge of sound stage from listening position. ( usually the singer ) Then there is depth of the sound stage itself from front to rear. That would be usually the center image ( closest instrument on the front of stage to furthest instrument towards the rear of the stage. The two depth distances are different. 😊

Thanks for asking Jay. The best imaging/ brain hack I have is the Acoustic Revive R777. It brings the performance into the room and erases the speaker plane barrier. (Herbie Hancock is said to perform with one nearby;-) Recently tried towing my Maggie LRS out 2" further away on the outer tweeter edges. Everything snapped into focus. Previously I could achieve the same by leaning forward a foot. Magnepan recommend a 1" tow out. 2" works better in my room. Fully agree on tube "holography". Still loving the Musical Paradise MP 701 preamp with Solid state power amps. Currently breaking in a D5proBC DartZeel NHB108 clone amp. Amazing! 🎵🎶🤫🎶🎵

Nice video! Room acoustics and speaker position are huge factors. I have found aligning speaker to speaker frequency, time and phase (and reducing excess phase above 200hz) tighten up imaging. Have been experimenting with upscaling adjusting level of min vs linear phase. Increasing min phase seems to soften up imaging when a little too tight/small/unnatural and opens up soundstage a bit more. I am a novice at all this so these are just my observations. (Ordered Toole’s book on BF to learn more about the science). It is really amazing with some mixes like those that used Qsound (wish they were still around). It has been fun experimenting and learning. Keep up the good work Jay!!

Nice video, Jay! I wonder if newer audio enthusiasts would understand soundstage better if they knew a little more about how and why there even is a soundstage in recordings. That what we are unlocking are the spatial aspects that microphones pick up in the recording process and the mix that engineers create in building a soundstage within the mixing process. That a soundstage is instruments and sounds captured captured or created within space. Proper setup of your system can unlock what is there in the recording, such as distances of instruments from microphones, distance between instruments, the aspects of the recording space and the size or reflective nature it has. Proper setup can unlock these spatial aspects in the recording and reproduce the space in front of and around you in your room. Engineers can manipulate and enhance the elements of space within the recording by way of controlling how soft or loud aspects of the recording are to better create the illusion of a soundstage and the images within it. Not all music is recorded naturally though and many sounds are created by electronics and here again engineers can create a soundstage of sounds by placing them almost like objects in space with layers of information and phase manipulation to create a three dimensional soundstage of elements. I think when people understand the recording process and production process it helps them understand what it is they are trying to unlock.

"Soundstage" is modern sales hype for technology perfected by Bell Labs in New Jersey in the 1920's. The secret is 3 channels discrete (L-C-R: 3 spaced omni microphones, 3 lines (3 full range record/reproduce channels), 3 full-range loudspeakers playing back on the same or identical stage as the performance. L-R "Stereo" is the compromise for consumers to get inexpensive disk media (30 years late) in 1957. Record your own 3 channel LCR and be amazed at how "solid" the center is. Drop the side channels for nice mono, or drop the center for L-R compatible, on a little 4mic mixer with inserts (Mackie 1202 ?). Try different mike placement or patterns for different advantage or effect. You can easily hear what's going on using this very inexpensive unit.

my experience is, as i put my speaker like 1,5 meter, till 2 meters from backwall, i got a really nice deep stage. i think its the most important thing. And of course the listen distance between speakers and themself. The angle position of the speakers is not directly pointed to my ears. its like one seat beside. So the stage is still deep and wider.

So glad you included recording characteristics in your discussion. A favorite test track of mine for evaluation a system's spatial capabilities is Take a Pebble by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. It's really well recorded and presents a kind of "spatial buffet" with dry, forward elements but also distant, ambience-rich elements or passages. Great music too!

That’s bizarre if you’ve never experienced sound staging or imaging. It’s ridiculously easy to experience. Just take any stereo speakers, and create an equilateral triangle or you are at the point of the triangle, and the loudspeakers are at the other tips of the triangle. So for instance, your left and right speaker and spread the 7 feet apart, and then place yourself between the speakers at 7 feet from the speakers. Now play stereo recording and you will hear sound staging and imaging - for instance if the vocalist is mixed to the centre of the sand stage as they normally are the singer will appear to be coming from directly in between both speakers right in front of you, with instruments arrayed around the vocalist if they are part of the mix.

Cross talk cancellation of the two channel speakers in stereo is the best way to hear the spacial cues of the recording leading to the most impressive 3D reproduction. Everybody can check that experience by putting a sound absorbing I g mattress between your speakers reaching out to your listening position, preventing the sound of the left speaker reaching the right ear and vice versa. This effect can nowadays also be achieved in the digital domain - no mattress needed anymore. Not only in my opinion the most significant step forward in audiophile music reproduction since switching from mono to stereo in the late 50s

Matching the speakers to my room. Getting the bass in the best location for it and removing it from the main speakers. Also, a lower height chair back and moving forward into the room to reduce back reflections. BTW, I have spent a lot of time in Lounges and Blues Bars so I like the more intimate sound of a vocalist forward some so she/he is in the room singing to me with everything else behind her. It is that sound when she is singing at my table and I hear her voice live instead of through the mis and speakers. There is for me magic in that sound. I also use DACs to move and tune the soundstage. I have an R2R for vocalists, a CHord for rcok and small bands and a Burr Brown for orchestras and a nice DDC so I just to change amp inputs for the sound I want. What is disconcerting is musicals where the orchestra sounds behind the audios and I know they are in the pit. Just hard to listen to Broadway recordings.

Huge difference . Not many get the ‘ideal seat’ for listening . In many cases you’re at the mercy of the venue / soundman . There is no such thing as perfect sounding live music . It’s simply alive . Perfection ? Is only for audio enthusiasts a total different ball game .I enjoy both . Another experience is the actual player . Anyone that has been in stage understands your true sound is manipulated in many ways , starting with the player . So it’s wonderful exhausting search for a never achieved perfection . So back to your statement .

While I agree to this full-heartly I don't think that good sound or soundstage is rarely the reason why I got to concerts. 99 out of 100 times the sound at home is much nicer than the live sound even if you are lucky and are standing or sitting in the sweet spot. Most of the time the sound is not so great trough the PA speakers and the imaging depends on the guy who is mixing the band and os setting the pan pots on his mixing desk. Also the music is mostly so loud that I need to wear hearing protection which makes the sound even worse. I go to live concert for that live feeling, for seeing the musicians actually perfrom the music that I like and to experience to music together with other likeminded people. And if the sound is good, that is a bonus. This is of couse different if you are at a very intimate acoustic concert or in a small Jazz club.

When properly set up, they need space and power, my 1.7i Maggies disappear and the artist is standing in front of you performing for you personally. With lots of music to select from, a perhaps unusual one I find really highlights center stage and depth, accuracy of human voice and acoustic guitar, is Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson. The entire album side. I promise new listeners that I will have ole Willie standing in front of them singing to them personally. And I do. I have had people tell me years later they will always remember it. One I have used for the entire soundstage is Jethro Tull's "Sossity, You're a Woman" (Benefit). It is a pair of intense guitars (not heavily amped) sonically attacking you with an incredible voice between them. I have heard this turn systems into mush! While with a really good one you can see the pick hitting the strings! But for pure over all detail and sound stage, recorded with a stereo pair mic system in a small chapel, "Take the A Train" Harry James on the "King James Version" direct to disc.

One of my favorite sources regarding sound stage and imaging are the early recordings of " Can " . The first half dozen albums they made in the late sixties and early seventies were made in non traditional spaces as makeshift studios. They were also recorded in two tracks essentially live. So the ambiance of the space is present in the recording. I use these recordings to set up my speakers to reproduce that space it was recorded in. It doesn't necessarily take expensive equipment to get a nice spacial sound. But it does take time and patience. Maybe some dumb luck along the way.

I have experimented a lot with the listening room a fair bit. If you have a TV ,I find installing it just 20-25cm higher is a big difference. Having a carpet is also great help. Try various spkr distances from the back wall to find the optimum position. If there is a coffee table , table cloth n various random stuff on the table will help. Having a low cabinet to put the equipment also helps. Just experimenting will give unexpected results.

I’m a believer in the theory that there is a very specific width, distance to listener and toe in angle for each speaker. That pinpoint spot where the speakers sit would be about the size of a 1” square. I think that each speaker design has unique dispersion characteristics and when the 2 speakers are set up correctly they synchronise together and act as one equal sound overlapping their dispersion identically. This imo is where speakers vanish and there is no direct sound, vocals and instruments have a lifelike size to them and tonality and focus are accurate.

Holographic Soundstage is the MOST important feature of a sound system for me. Generally, if a system can achieve this, other factors, such as tone and timbre, etc. do very well also. I have three systems currently, my living room, bedroom and computer desk. I have some 110 lb. MTM towers with two tens, paired with a sub with twin twelves, and solid state separates, high current amp, etc. in my living room. In my bedroom I have some bookshelf Dali Ikons with two powered subs, running off of an AVR receiver. That's where most TV and movie viewing occurs. The Dalis are very good for discerning speech during movies. They also image quite well and throw a wide, deep soundstage. At my computer desk, I have some original NHT SuperZero's on some blank DVDs as stands. I picked the NHTs used for $50 delivered. They're paired with an old Yamaha Servo Sub tucked behind my desk. And I'm using a Rotel receiver that's over 40 years old that I've had since I was in my youth. And I play FLAC files on a decent sound card on my PC. TBH, listening to the NHTs in the near-field, blended perfectly with the sub in a small room - it is the most holographic and lifelike experience I have ever enjoyed. This cheap little setup puts the musicians in the room. Electronic notes hover in the air in front of me, so real that I could touch them. Of course, this has everything to do with the fact that it is near-field, with no discernible room interactions. That's why studios mix music with this type of setup. And before everyone comes at me, I used to sell HiFi, just like Jay. For years I sold mid and high end. And then sold mid tier and car audio. Granted, this was years ago and there is lots of newer stuff that I've never heard. But at the time, I heard just about all there was, even at the highest levels. So I know what good sound is. My ears are well trained. That's how I became a Soundstage junkie in the first place. So yeah, I get a semi when Hope Sandoval is singing her breathy songs right in front of me. Or the wall of PF's clocks are ticking all around me. And it feels like I could get up and walk around each of the band members while they play. For me, that is the most magical trick of audio. I've got speakers that measure ruler flat. And that can match the timbre of a violin (my ex is a violinist). I've got equipment that can play from 18-30kHz. But to get all of that stuff to completely disappear - replaced by the musicians themselves, appearing right in my listening space? That's always my ultimate goal...

hi Jay. i''ve been watching and researching hard for several months now and have a video idea i'd love to suggest. having tried more gear than most ever will have an opportunity to, could you maybe suggest full setups at different price ranges and maybe even having a few options with different priorities for sound profiles but always considering cohesive componentpairing ? basically, your favourite setups at different price ranges, taking into account the component pairing from top to bottom. this would be such a valuable way to consolidate all your experience and knowledge for everyone that can't or doesn't want to keep cycling through different components. from there, you could extend this resource into branching out upgrade paths for each element of the system, always building on a few different baseline setups at different price points. maybe limiting the upgrade paths to a budget that goes as high as the next baseline system cost, where spending more on any single upgrade would be disproportionate to the rest of the system it starts from. as you review new stuff, the baseline systems could be kept up to date with your current recommendations at that price, but always with the consideration of the context of component pairing of the rest of that system. sorry i made it sound complicated, i'm basically asking you to establish a few core setup recommendations at different prices that you can work on and keep updated as you review things at different prices. thank you for your videos and the wonderful knowledge and insights you share with us!

The transparency (imaging) of the F2 is perfect with the Tannoy which also creates great soundstage via design (15” dual concentric). I never go concert .....because it is expensive, it depends on the size of the place, the sound equipment and so on. But being friends of musicians, I was often with them during private sessions. This means I was in the middle of them, surrounded by the different instruments. This intimate listening is what I am looking for and what I get in my living room. I made my speakers from a high sensitive single 15' driver, I made my class A solid state of 25w and I also have a SET tube amp of 2,3w. I need to upgrade my source but already like this, I enjoy both envelopping sound stage and imaging. I listen at low level and I am very close to the speakers, some 2 meters away. They are on three wheels (why 3 and not 4 you ask, you should have the answer I guess) so I can move them around at will, push them back to the walls when not in use and they are big boxes....and big box provide big sound (not to confuse with high level) from a single point source, very near the floor and tilted slightly upward...that's why I built them myself, it doesn't exist on the market. A friend come every now and then just to listen and he shocked each time. For example this afternoon, I started with Mercedes Sosa singing Atuhalpa Yupanqui.....he said "she is here"....in front of us and the guitarist seated just beside us on the left, the atmosphere of the room was now my living room atmosphere, I could offer her a glass of whatever she wanted in between songs. But you know how we are, I guess I could get a touch more of clarity and also less components, so I am looking for a better a single source doing it all from streaming to preamp. I probably found it.....just need the cash now.

On toe-in: the way you should toe-in your speakers is greatly influenced by the horizontal dispersion pattern and thus the type of driver/arrangement of drivers. With pointsource speakers for example, it's often best to not toe them in at all or just slightly like you suggested. But with horn loaded speakers its usually best to keep them pointed staight at your ear, or you could even experiment with a "cross-toe" where you point the right speaker at your left ear and vice versa. This can increase soundstage and can also widen the ideal listening position. Definitely experiment, but you can often make a more educated guess if you know the way it disperses sound (wider pattern = less toe-in, though manufacturers might have their own recommendations) Your room also influences toe-in, you might have a wall that has some nasty reflections so keeping the speaker angled away from that could be more beneficial. What I described earlier holds mostly true for ideal conditions.

Stereophile recently voiced concern that young people weren't interested in high quality audio. Could be they don't know a good 2 channel system can create an immersive 3D listening experience. Future of hifi is in good hands w influencers like you. I found deeper soundstaging once i switched to tube amps.

Hi-Fi is not an inexpensive hobby. Liking and listening to music on "okay" compromised little speakers in compact spaces, or earbuds, is affordable. Even Compact Disc collections seem too big for many living in roommate-sharing or booth-like sleeping spaces. High Scool graduates are in terrible financial situations without parental support, while borrowing for college is like a house mortgage without the place to live. Fortunately, bottom-end music hardware repro is better and cheaper than 40 years ago, but bigger remains much better in both rooms and loudspeakers. ;-)

Hi Jay! Thank you for a nice video. I have recently changed my tube power amp with a purifi-based class D power paired to an output trasformerless class A tube pre-amp. In this way, I have reached a nice balance between wide and deep sound stage and focused imaging. What do you think about this strategy? Furthermore, it would be great if you could review the Mastersound Spettro tube preamp. I would really like to hear your thoughts. Best Paolo from Stockholm

Probably important to mention the benefits of reducing vibrations / resonances coming from your speakers and subwoofers. Using isolation feet (such as IsoAcoustic pucks) significantly helps make speakers “disappear” into the soundstage, rather than the music just coming from the speakers

Hi Jay, I think there are two devices that play a big role when it comes to soundstage and focused imaging, that you never talk about (correct me if I’m wrong). That is the streaming transport and the network switch.

@Nepty_, I´m with you regarding streaming music... Since I upgraded my network with a couple of switches connected to clean power, sophisticated ethernet cables the system advanced greatly in depth and sound stage. I guess I left some of the garbage out that pollute our stream. This is next level to most people though, but once experienced there is no way back...

I have my Paradigm Founders just over a foot from the wall and a little toe in as well. Now I am looking for a new amp. I am wondering if a new amp would have an effect on the placement of the speakers? Would my soundstage and imaging be effected, other then being wider, deeper, higher etc?

Jay, a while back I came across a great audio hack that has blown me away with regard to imaging and sound staging. I have a very nice room acoustically - it was designed with the input of an acoustician. And I also use curtains that I could gather at any place along the sidewalk in order to modulate sidewall, reflection for more or less spacious or focussed sound. Anyway, as you say , usually when angling speakers, there’s a trade-off between imaging precision or widening the soundstage which also tends to widen and slightly diffuse the images. I’ve tried to find the balance for that and I like a nice spacious stage I do tend to toe my speakers out somewhat. Also, I find that too much toeing out of both speakers crates too much of a laser focussed and squeezed sounding images, which sound too small and reductive to me. I like my Sonic images to have size and heft - more realism. And also cutting down on sidewall reflections does help to cut down on room hash to the sound, so that you hear into the character of the recorded space even better. But that was often at the cost of losing a slight liveliness and directness to the sound . So the hack that has worked wonders for me is placing a Curved Diffusor (the one I have is from Acoustic Geometry) behind and between my loudspeakers. This is different from the type of diffusion you are using behind your speakers which, as you say, tend to scatter the sound for more spaciousness. What a single curved diffusor does is focus the sound. What I mean by this is it the sound retains the large soundstage and the larger image sizes provided by the toe out of the speakers, but the sound of all the Sonic images in the soundstage become more solid and dense and palpable - like you get with the precision of more toe in, except you don’t get that squeezing down of the image sizes. And the sound becomes a more alive, yet without the detriments that you get from sidewall reflections. In other words it’s essentially the best of all worlds: the spaciousness and image size you get from keeping the speakers somewhat toed out, you get the extremely subtle intimacy of the recorded acoustic maintained with the sidewall reflections tamed, and yet you get incredibly palpable lively images. Some of my audio buddies have completely been amazed at what they are hearing at my place now. a huge expensive soundstage, but with the most dense and life like imaging within that soundstage. FWIW.

I think that I have my system dialed in well…tube preamp, high quality powerful amp, great bookshelf speakers 3’ out from the walls, significant room treatments in a very good low-reflection room. My seating position is out from the back wall, too! I can REALLY tell the difference between good recordings from bad ones…THAT is a great "tell" that your system is dialed in…with "good recordings" my soundstage and imagining is very good…with bad recordings there is not much to be done. If you have a good recording, CD quality is all you need to make the magic. It’s sooooooo cool!

depending on your room size, I don't think so. If you room is small enough, it will make sound and maybe get loud enough but when you want to really crank it or on those occasions you play bass heavy music - even with a sub, the amplifier may clip. I'd suggest something like Hegel integrated amplifiers for Magnepans, that synergy works out beautifully.

Room Size (larger is better, like auditorium), room treatment, source material with depth (you might have to record it yourself), then pretty much any repro hardware will sound good. The difference between $1000 system and $20000 will be a little bass extension and bone-crushing volume along with "audiophile cred" for wasted cash.

You didnt mention the distance between the speakers and the distanf from the speakers to your listening position. I know most times they say an equilateral triangle from your listening position. I have seen speakers slammed up against the wall and only about 4 feet apart...probably the worst setup. Ya not everyone can place their speakers optimally, but the sound sure suffers.

I have moved away from Soundstage and think in terms of Soundspace. This is where the original recording characteristics fills the entire listening room. Width, Depth, Height of the recording characteristic replaces the listening room characteristics. One example of Soundspace over Soundstage is noise at the start or end of a recording. It should fill the entire listening room, including behind the listener. This will normally be flat or 2 1/2 Dimensional in a Soundstage. Also having a Soundstage behind the speakers is an outdated experience in my mind.

Exactly, one of the best systems I've heard had that quality, I got really spooked because it was like the physical room we were in was transformed into the space and dimensions of the recording studio room, you could sense that environment and it really freaked me out at the time, too much for the mind to grasp. It was as if you were not listening to a recording but in the recording and the music filled the room and was everywhere around you. I can tell you get it and have experienced that, probably not that many have.

@@Jayiyagi No matter how you slice it, if a good recording is designed with the proper soundstage in mind of the engineer, you will hear it best in open, unrestricted speakers designed as monitors. Unfortunately, there are not too many speakers or electronics that are designed and capable of transferring the original sound in and out openly, unrestricted, uncolored, or undistorted. Everything in the business of good recording is done to create a sound that closely resembles the original sound. In theory, it sounds easy, like you describe, and in reality, it is not.
