As a native Cantonese speaker, I have to correct/say two things. 1. Cantonese characters and Mandarin characters are NOT the same. for example : Now I'm taking a bus to go home. in Cantonese : 我而家搭緊巴士返屋企 in Mandarin : 我现在正在坐公交车回家 You can find that only one character is the same "我", means "I". So not only the speaking are mutually unintelligible, in fact the characters are also quite different. I would say only 30～50％ characters are the same, depending on the sentence. 2. In the video there were these two phrases : "I take a bus" and "I go to toile". He said Cantonese and Mandarin are the same, written in "我上巴士" and "我上厕所". As a native Cantonese speaker, I've never said that, instead of that, I say "我坐巴士" and "我去廁所". But no surprised, because there're many non-native Cantonese speaker would say like that especially the native Mandarin speaker. Knowing Mandarin is a benefit to learn Cantonese, yes, it's right. Since they have very similar grammars(but not the same). But I have to say that their characters and vocabularies are very different.

When he says the characters are the same he's clearly referring to how they use the same script. Which is true. That doesn't mean they are used the same way. But they are used the same way most of the time because the written language uses Mandarin as the standard. Hardly anyone writes like 我而家搭緊巴士返屋企. That's only used in intimate situations.

@@Liliquan Hardly everyone writes like that : because not everyone knows who to write in Cantonese even though they are native Cantonese speaker, especially outside of Hongkong. That's only used in intimate situations : Don't forget, athough the writing language sometimes uses Mandarin as standard, but in every situation, Cantonese speaker would never speak as the writing language. Even in the news, for example, when they refer to the phrase "they say", they would say "佢哋話", instead of the writing language(subtitle)"他们说". Just like French news, speaking in French but the writing language(subtitle) uses Spanish.
