Having been born and raised in northern Ontario, I learned ‘Finnglish’ and when my elders all left this world, I lost most of my meagre language skills. When I retired a few years ago, I signed up for Finnish language classes and was pleasantly surprised by how much came back to me and stunned by the complexities of the language as well. I began to learn how to read Finnish (helps immensely) and writing (extremely difficult for me) and feel a bit more comfortable with my almost forgotten first language. We travelled to Finland three years ago and I met some of my cousins - so amazing! I intend to go back and explore a bit more, spend time getting to know a few of my cousins and generally soaking up the beauty that is Finland. I also learned new words like lunch, weather, and then basics like months, clothing, body parts, etc. that I didn’t know before. Enjoying your vids and I can understand a lot of what you’re saying, but not all, so I’ll keep listening 😁.

I feel your pain lol. Spent 40 years in Ontario and managed to forget most of my Finnish, especially because where I lived in Guelph, there is only one other Finn I know, and he doesn't speak Finnish. I've been living in Finland now for a bit over five years and still get tongue tied all the time. It's sort of embarrassing when I go up north to where my cousins live and I can't keep up with conversations. And of course local dialects, idioms, and speech patterns make it all much harder. In the reverse, when we moved back to Toronto in 1973, the only thing I would say to anybody was "My name is Lea and I don't speak English" HAHA!

On some words your pronunciation is spot, on some you have a slightly Estonian sounding accent and on some you have the kind of accent you hear with most Foreigners that are from a Latin based language group 🤔 A really interesting mix of accents! Come spend more time in Finland and you'll sound like a native in no time (you already have a very good vocabulary so all you need to do is some fine tuning with pronunciation and postpositions), I for one would be glad to volunteer as a training conversation partner 😁 we could do half the conversations in Finnish and half in English so you could help me with my English pronunciation and I could help you with your Finnish, also it would be great to pick your brain a bit about the Finnish culture and life in general (as I love learning how other people see the world)

Thanks Warutteri. It's coming along for sure. Spending more time in Finland would help for sure. Our trip last year didn't happen but fingers crossed for this summer. Thank you for the offer. Not a lot of time at the moment but I have a few plans in the works. ;) .

The weather = sää and when you get back home laitat kahvin kiehumaan. The word (pannaan) is more often used for having ''fun'' with some one else in the bed. :) I think you should watch some finnish youtube vids. Im sure that will help with learning the spoken language.

When I read "laitat kahvin kiehumaan" I could hear my grandmothers voice. :) .. ha.. 'pannaan' that would have made for some more interesting subtitles.

"Pannaan kahvit kiehumaan" is definitely fine even though "pannaan" also means making love for the younger people. Older people used "naiminen" for same kind of making love word. Just makes you to sound like you are a bit older than you in reality are :D

panna is fine word to use whenever even though it also does mean having sex. Every1 understands if u just say it normally and not with a quirky laughing face.

Your pronunciation of Finnish is actually really good. Those endings of Finnish words are tough though because there is so many of them in Finnish language. I recomend of reading Finnish literature, thats good way to learn all those inflected forms of different words in all kind of sentences if you are in to learning to get better and more fluent in speaking Finnish.

Thank you, Ari. My reading abilities are getting a little better but still takes a little while to get through a sentence.

I'm gonna give you some advice in Finnish language if you just want to keep a conversation up. Just build up your finnish dictionary, we don't care what you add in the end, we understand you nonetheless. Then just keep having conversations with people and correct your self when you notice you're making mistakes, we're most likely not going to correct you. We appreciate that you that you're trying to learn our difficult language.

Ei kuka vaan mikä= Not who but what :) When you are talking about who in Finnish it is normally used about a person . Mikä täällä oli? What was here? Iso tie = big road but more like a path= polku . other then that your annunciation is pretty spot on i am glad that you haven't forgotten where your roots are :)

Hi, I am the son of Finnish immigrants, the first one born here in '57. My brothers and sisters were all born in Finland. Finnish was my first and only language until I was about 3 years old. When I read your list of words I "see" pictures of the meanings. "Polku" I see feet walking or stepping "Plolkupyora (bicycle)" is "Foot Wheel" "Jalanjälkiä" I see "leftover feet or leavings of feet" "Kolmijalka" is three feet. The hardest thing is to separate out the Finglish and to know what is native and what is borrowed, like "traktori". I can hear the english behind many finnish words. I've been to finland twice (1963 and 1987). I think it's time to go again!

Impressed of your Finnish, well done. Everything is understandably, pronouncing great. I think there is generally something funny on how by the book Finns are teaching the language to foreigners... on 1 hand there is many dialects, then there is the practical way Finns speak... or maybe don't speak. And the official way. I think on "normal" use at least myself and people I communicate cut off lots of words , simplified. Even thou I understand the the way spoken...its the part that shows for me that the person has not Finnish as original language. Its like Finns who have change to teach are making it more complicated. Admiring anyone who still after that actually learns the language.
