Fun fact: Tolkien was influenced by Kalevala. "Tolkien took an interest in the Finnish mythology of the Kalevala, a 19th-century work of epic poetry compiled by Elias Lönnrot. He then became acquainted with the Finnish language, which he found to provide an aesthetically pleasing inspiration for his Elvish language Quenya."

Yes, one can see that we still have these tribes. Dialects, traditions and culture differ somewhat regionally. Agricola, Lönnrott and Kalevala are all basic knowledge in Finland and are all thought in schools. Martti Ahtisaari died recently. He was very known in Namibia for example. Manynamibian children named Martti running around.

Here's another jolly fact: the girl in the painting at 2:40 is shown suffering from a symptom of a certain stage of starvation, a bloated belly. Finland went through a famine in the middle of the 1800's. Thanks for another nice reaction video!

Yes, the ancient tribes are still distinct archetypes. Those areas became counties of Finland when it became independent, and was like that well into 1990s. After that the new division split the country into 5: the souther, eastern, western, and northern Finland, plus Lapland. Still the distinct characteristics of each tribe is easily noticed. For example I am from Savo region, but I have lived in Tavastehus for 15 years now. Still every time I meet new people they ask me where I am from right after I have uttered a first sentence. I think I have lost my dialect, but obviously I haven't 😅 And yes, Mikael Agricola is a well known historical person. Even elementary school kids know him. So is Elias Lönnrot and his main book Kalevala. The winter war didn't occur just because of the naval base in Hanko, there were also other areas that soviets demanded. And the fear was that if Finland gave those, soviets would demand some more later, and then more, and more and more until there would be nothing left (as did happen to the baltic states). Finnish economy didn't develop despite reparations, it develop because of it. Finland didn't have means to pay reparations, so it had to develop technologies in order to increase it's production. Once the reparations were paid, we had all the technologies in place, but the money and products that used to go into the soviet union for free stayed in Finland, which increased our finances subtantially.

to be able to read and write in you own language is very important. that is how nations come independent and throw out tyrants.

Tribes are loosely associated with the nine historical provinces of Finland, so there are more than three of them. Differing in dialects and traditions. Cultural stereotypes about the tribes are also common. I sort of believe in them, suffering from confirmation bias as much as the next guy. There was no 'Russia' in 1323, but many eastern Slavic states. Sweden's eastern border was agreed with the republic of Novgorod. At that time, principality of Moscow was in the business of collecting taxes from their neighbours for the mongols. There are old film adaptations of some parts of Kalevala. For me, however, its influence is more powerful in music (e.g. Sibelius), and in paintings (e.g. Gallen-Kallela). JRR Tolkien started writing his first novel about Kullervo, a tragic character in Kalevala, but did not finish it.

there are lots of remnants of these ancient tribes. For the most part its only cultural, as phenotypic differences and such has faded away especially after our independence when people started moving to different parts of the country intermingling. But there are still different dialects, foods and traditions.

For old tribes, there are still different dialects and stereotypical characteristics but most of us are mix now. Like my roots as far as I know are Häme, Savo and Carelia. Added with later grandparents locating to central Finland and my family to Capital Area 😄

The Eastern and Western Finns are genetically more distant from each other than many of the European countries are. There's also a clear DNA difference between people living in different Finnish regions. Also characteristically and stereotypically the tribes are different and the different regions have their own dialects. Finland's prehistory is still bit of a mystery. The Sámi people ought to have been mentioned too, because they have earlier inhabited significantly larger region in Finland and Scandinavia than today. Also some believe that the Finland's national epic, Kalevala, tells about the relationship between the Finns and the Sámi people. Noting that 'Finns' was originally a name given to the Sámi people by third party, which then became a common label for all the Finno-Ugric speakers inhabiting the Northern Europe all the way to Ural mountain and even as far South as Ukraine. Kalevala was in a significant role when Finland's national identity was created. J.R.R. Tolkien read the Kalevala at his early age. Finnish language fascinated him and inspired him to invent his own languages, which he then wanted to include into some fictional world. From Kalevala he was particularly fond of the Kullervo's tragic story. Late president Ahtisaari won the Nobel as a settler of conflicts and peace mediator for E.g. the work he did in the Northern Ireland peace process.

Learn about the Ww2. What the Finns did on their own. Read about Mannerheim -:a very important figure in Finnish history. We owe him a lot. He would not shake hands with Hitler and spoke fluent Russian with Stalin. A grest strategist.

There are still minor cultural differencies between finnish tribes, and dialogues, but mostly it died out after WW2 because of Karelian evacuees and urbanization. There were the idea of Great Finland before WW2. There were other finnish tribes outside finnish borders aswell. Finns supported the independence movements of finnish tribes inside Russian empire after the Bolshevik revolution, but only Estonian independence was succesfull. The idea still flourished in continuation war, but it came to a bitter end. It's sad to think what it could have been. All the beautifull land, and the multiculturalism we could have had.

No, he didn't. He was a literary scholar and a gentleman, and studied many legends. He knew the Classic Greek and Roman stories, dove deep into the Saxons and the Vikings, and found a great fascination with the Finnic stories. When he ended up creating his own fantasy world, he used everything he knew, including his Christian upbringing. He was always very upfront about his sources. They are mentioned in his writings. Have you read even the appendices to The Lord of the Rings? Or his letters, which have been published posthumously? And his use of Finnish as a basis for the Quenya elven language is legendary. An act of love, not piracy.

when countries get out of debt you can see what happens. Look at Libya or Romania for example. Both countries became viewed as tyrannies as they managed to pay off the international bankers.

The happiness index is a translation error. It should be a life satifaction index or something like that, then it would be more correct. When measuring actual happiness, small island nations of Pacific ocean and the Caribean all measure quite high, where Finland ranks about the average.
