Cancel culture has destroyed careers and upended the lives of many who’ve made a controversial statement or committed a socially unacceptable act. It's sparked a debate about whether such incidents precipitate much-needed change or simply threaten freedom of expression. This CBS Reports documentary dives into these complex conversations, featuring stories of people who experienced being "canceled" - and those who have used it as a tool to hold others to account.

It should be about opening conversation, not an either/or. We have democratised criticism through social media which is probably the most powerful democratic tool ever given. However, it should be used to question people’s actions, open discussion, not ruin people’s lives. There is a balance achievable.
@fulanichild3138
@fulanichild3138 3 жыл бұрын
@@wordscontrolminds Mob justice is not democracy. It is vigilante-ism, which is illegal. A basic tenet of democracy is having a justice system that: 1. Informs the accused of the precise accusation. 2. Informs the accused who their accusers are. 3. Allows the accused and accusers to go before an impartial judge and tell their sides of the story. 4. Allows the judge make a decision of guilt or innocence based on the evidence. 5. Has codified sentencing guidelines so that someone cannot have their life destroyed for being rude. I agree, it's best to open conversations, but mob justice has taken hold of our society and, as this documentary shows, is glorified by some. It is dangerous.

From what I've seen, cancel culture mainly surrounds people who have a history of not changing their bad behavior. Shane Dawson for example has done horrible things throughout his whole 10+ year career. In cases like that, 'cancelling' is justified. Some people never change so just forgiving isn't always the answer.

We need to draw a line somewhere between letting someone know that their behavior is unacceptable and destroying their lives and livelihood for making a bad choice. If nothing is ever done as a consequence to harmful behavior, no one will ever feel need to grow and change. Brian Batie if it isn’t dealt with in the present then yeah, you don’t get to bring up something that someone said or did years ago just because you’re offended by it now. No one has the right to not be offended by things that other people say or do, your feelings are not constitutionally protected, free speech is. No one should have the power to get you fired from your job just because they got offended by something you said or did long ago, especially if you’ve apologized and changed for the better. But to be called out like that and raked over the cools for it it is wrong. The problem with cancel culture is they don't allow for the fact that people err and they can change. That was my point. Why would I as a human being do that to someone when I am just as flawed as everyone else. The people screeching the loudest on social media don't get that that they too are flawed. Tammie Teclemariam has no business ruining lives and humiliating people and then calling that justice. People like her are frightening because they think nothing of rushing to judgement and using the resulting outcry to ruin someone's life and not stopping even for a second to consider the possibility they are unjustly harming their targets. To her, the fact the CEO was white and employee complaints were all she needed to decide the CEO was a "bad guy" who needed to be fired. Nearly every major company the world over has its critics and many of those critics are simply bitter, angry people who interpret things their way. It is INCREDIBLY irresponsible to take every employee's word as irrefutable gospel and make solid claims that haven't been verified over issues that are by their very nature highly open to interpretation! Racism and inequality are perfect examples of that. There will be employees who feel they are treated unequally and there will be employees who will claim there is a toxic culture at their workplace when the source of that toxicity is actually them! Cancel culture's capacity for justice then becomes highly dependent on those who initiate it. At one point, Ms. Teclemariam reveals her mission statement includes taking down people who hog up positions of power. There is no mention of taking down corrupt and evil people because that isn't her main goal. Her goal is to remove white people from leadership roles because they are white. Having dressed up as a Puerto Rican is not even an issue on its own, but it is a powerful issue when it comes to taking down a white guy from a position of power. She didn't say anything about race being a factor in her cancelling of individuals but it was definitely alluded to. This is why cancel culture must be cancelled unless you're willing to put the lives of others, as well as your own, possibly in the hands of people with an agenda rooted in evil. Most decent people on their own wouldn't feel at peace with ruining someone's life using the tactics used in cancel culture but in a group it is far easier because any feelings of guilt and remorse are distributed and eventually diluted.

"Fueled by emotion", perfectly said, so many times it is not fueled by facts. I would hate to have my life defined by one moment of it, from 10, 20, or even 1-5 years ago. I am not the same person I was last week....life experiences and exposure to information has evolved the way I see things. I do believe that there has been some good in calling out bad behavior that is still going on and seeing it brought to light. My issue is the amount of time people spend digging into someone's past to find something to drag them with and try to destroy them. Cancel culture is going to backfire. Social media has become a monster and unfortunately created monsters.

Criticizing or holding people accountable for certain things they say is different than cancel culture. Someone shouldn't be fired from their job or someone forced to apologize or removed and banned from social media for such minor things. Primarily digging up stuff from people's past is the worst. People mature and become better people for the most part. KZbin for example has banned or demonetized numerous creators for something that they uploaded in the past when at the time the TOS made these uploads ok. Then they changed their TOS to nothing short of complete censorship and they search creators past uploads and ban or demonetize them on the grounds of the current TOS. This is just wrong on so many levels.

This is why we need a "counsel" culture vs. Cancel. Some people are just not knowledgeable about some things. We can certainly sit down and educate the other person as to why their statement or action hurt the people as a whole. Hold them accountable, but also educate. People make mistakes and misspeak, and we all have done some things we regret or thought we could've done better

There's a difference between calling someone out for something they did yesterday, and ruining someone for a mistake they made 20 years ago. I don't think many people understand that. I don't agree with cancel culture, but I also understand that people need to face the consequences of their actions. A CEO who is visibly racist today should resign or be removed, but a comedian who made a joke, whether it was yesterday or 10 years ago, should not be "cancelled" for that joke. It is literally his job to make jokes.

With the man, Adam, who shot the video of the KFC drive-through, people who haven’t worked a customer service job don’t realize how common that kind of interaction can be. It comes from individuals who feel entitled to bully and harass service workers when if they really do feel strongly, should be reaching out to the real higher-ups in a corporation. Adam didn’t deserve the full response that he received but that video did come from an amazing sense of entitlement which resulted in an ‘easy’ outlash on someone who didn’t actually have company standing and couldn’t defend themselves or really respond. He didn’t actually want to make any change or else he would have reached out to the people that can actually make changes in the company and wouldn’t have verbally attacked and criticized a minimum wage worker.

I feel bad for the editor of "Bon Appetite". You see what happened there... without any context around the Halloween photo, he was judged (he was treated prejudicially) under the assumption that he meant ill or had malicious intent. "Cancel culture" does society and individuals a grave injustice: it robs both parties (those who are hurt and those who with or without intent) may have caused hurt - it robs from them the ability to communicate and reconcile. Difficult conversations are ... difficult. If you "cancel" someone, you do yourself the harm of not learning how to communicate about complicated situations. You also prejudge that person. For the editor of Bon Appetite, in the picture I saw here, it did not look like "brown face" to me. He had a penciled in mustache. So what? Furthermore, we don't know the context. Maybe his Puerto Rican friend asked him to dress like that for a themed party. Maybe many other Puerto Ricans that night saw him at the party and were not offended or actually joined in the fun. Maybe some Puerto Ricans at the party dressed like white suburbanites. We don't know the full story. Instead, one was made up that the editor was 100% a bad person. The current GenZ or Millennial generation is hyper sensitive I believe. We should understand other's intent and the surrounding circumstances before casting collective judgement. And we should relax a bit more around topics of race and gender. Not everything is intended with malice. I suspect most of the time people don't mean ill, so let's just relax, keep lines of communication open even with those we disagree, and look at things through a positive lens.

Even if most of them were racist, I would take the racist spewing his filth to no one listening over the angry mob that would surround them and destroy just not their life but even the lives of people around them sometimes. There have been CHILDREN who have said stupid things and have been cancelled and guess what happened? Their school continued to get bomb and shooting threats all the time. That is bad for a school to get. We aren’t even going to mention the going 30 years back into someone’s past to pick out some mistake they did and pretend like someone can’t change in 30 years.
@Joseiaddict
@Joseiaddict 3 жыл бұрын
Alexander Liptak You know what cancel means in this conversation. We are literally talking about “Cancel” culture. For those children, Look at Skai Jackson’s Twitter for example. She doxxed two twelve year olds because they posted a meme that had the n-word as a joke. She sent her fan base after children and their school was also affected by it. She also falsely sent people after the wrong person. You probably won’t find the tweets now cause she deleted them but there were channels that covered those stories. For how toxic cancel culture can be, have you not seen the protests that were going on about statues(not confederate statues, I understand taking them down and putting in museums or something) People have literally wanted to take down statues of the founding fathers. That is pretty much cancelling someone who is dead. They did own slaves but you can’t apply our morals of today to those generations. They lived in a different time with different morals. For those numbers, do you know what it means to be truly racist? A racist is someone who actually truly believes that they are superior to someone else based on race or skin color(any race can be racist). Many of these people who are recorded and go viral are most likely not truly racist. They most likely made a stupid decision while being emotional and said something that they didn’t mean. I have told my sister before in arguments “You family hates you” but do I really mean it? No, I said it to be hurtful cause we were angry with each other. These people do the same thing. If they commit crimes in the process of having an emotional reaction, I’m all for slapping them with the law book. By you calling me Alex Jones, I see that you haven’t really watched Alex Jones. I don’t watch him cause his ideas are ridiculous but to call me him just cause I’m saying some Right leaning ideas shows how well you treat someone else in a civil discourse. Btw I’m a Moderate that Leans Right a bit.
@Joseiaddict
@Joseiaddict 3 жыл бұрын
@@xanderliptak The reason I brought up the statue thing is that by taking down those statues, people are ignoring all of the good things that those people did. I don't know about you but I like my Freedom of Speech and other rights which allow us to have this discussion in the first place which those people immortalized in those statues drafted and signed the document that prevents government from infringing on those rights. Those people did unacceptable things in today's standards but by taking them down, you ignore all the good they did and those statues weren't erected to honor their now unacceptable acts, it was to honor the good ones. I also don't get why you insist to do the name calling. It doesn't help your case and it just looks childish. Name calling has no place in civil discussion and I think we can all agree to that. Onto the next thing, Cancel Culture itself has many similarities with Harassment, and they usually happen together. Do you not consider going into someones distant past with INTENTIONS of ruining their careers as harassment? How about calling that person's work to purposefully get them fired or in the case with the two children, their schools. Also that was a classic case of cancel culture. It would of just been just regular old harassment if Skai herself was doing it but what did she do, she sent her Hundreds of Thousands of followers to track down information about them so that she could repost it and give it more attention. That is the difference between regular old harassment and Cancel Culture. CC could really be considered an extension of harassment where a large number of people join in and ruin a person's life. Usually harassment doesn't end in a loss of career or livelihood but CC does. About the link thing, you have a perfect link above you, it's the video you are watching and commenting on. I could also use the same card on you and say "Where are you getting the numbers at that most people who do get cancelled are racist?" I'll just let you know that I'm nowhere near the only person that holds these beliefs and there are probably people better at arguing this stance than i am cause I usually don't debate about these types of things. You can call me Alex Jones for all you care cause I don't really care. I know myself that I don't agree with him and there really isn't any need to prove that to someone over the internet. I'm happy at least that we could have a mostly civil discussion unlike many people on both sides of the aisle who are closed to this type of discussion. Thank You for that and this is weird to say to someone over the internet lol but have a good day :). Depends on what they were "canceled" for how long ago the action took place, and how consistent the behavior was, I think.

Can only condemn the choice of intro. That first speaker was a god awful choice. Doesn't make it seem like it's going to be a remotely nuanced or sophisticated look at the issue.

I hate this idea of cancel culture being a societal monster. All it is is millions of people saying that what you did isn't right therefore we will no longer consume anything with you in it. Who ever is being canceled made a choice and now I am.

Soo... that CEO at Bon Apetit was wrong for THAT job (according to her), BUT is he wrong for every job?? She’s too smug about taking him down. It seems she has all the power now... and it’s definitely going to her head.

Back in the olden days before cancel culture many people have said or committed offensive things and have gotten away with it. Now people have to take responsibility for their actions. Why is that so wrong?

Since when is Puerto Rican a RACE? Irony for Smith is he didn’t say anything derogatory to the drive through girl. He was just badgering her and it was dumb. I can’t understand how he got death threats. I mean how did all those people track him down to his company? Who has that kind of time?

I feel bad for the Chic fil a guy. I can see it came from a good place but the way he delivered it wasn’t the best and the fact that he posted it didn’t help. I don’t think his life should be ruined because of this one mistake. I hope he finds another job.

"Cancel culture" is the peoples power to negotiate in a free society and market. If a company or person does something or sells something that hurts anyone or others don't like, we have the right to protest and boicott. But, actions taken on false claims (knowingly or by willful ignorance) just to slander, harass and hurt someone or a company, is not a right. That ought to be criminal, because it can really cause damage far beyond ie a mugging or robbery might do.
