@@livedandletdie I'd say that is highly individual, or this is at least what I'd day from personal experience. Some people seem to have a knack at easily wiping any traces of an accent, for others it takes time, and for some there will still be remnant of an accent regardless of how much they try to pronounce words in a "native way". My French teacher for example, she speaks English, French, Italian and Norwegian (Italian is from her parents). She has a quite prominent accent when speaking both norwegian and French, but she's fluent I both and have lived in norway for 20+ years. Saying that "oh its because she's lazy" because she still has an accent after using the language daily for over two decades seems like an odd claim, but if you'd like to elaborate in any way, please go ahead. (to clarify, I'm not trying to be snarky. I'm just genuinely curious if you have any thoughts/input on this)

@@TangerineTux No. “British accent” is meaningless. An English accent in English, a French accent in French, a Chinese accent in Chinese, and a Korean accent in Korean is by definition the same as saying someone is speaking properly or accentlessly.
@TangerineTux
@TangerineTux 3 жыл бұрын
@@Correctrix Not at all. What I called a British accent and a French accent were of course a more vague description than they could have been, but regardless, everyone has an accent, just as everyone speaks a (or at least one) dialect. If you speak with a Parisian accent, then someone with a Toulouse accent will rightfully perceive yours as different from theirs, although both are French accents. And both of them will sound foreign to French speakers from Canada or from Congo. What is the definition of “accent” that you are using that makes your statement true? Are you using “accent” to mean “foreign accent”? In which case, one question is, foreign to what? If you call a certain pronunciation “accentless”, then you implicitly assume a certain reference. What justifies the choice of reference?

I remember the day I "got" a joke in another language. I'm a native English speaker. I've been trying to learn French (off and on) for about 20 years now. I was once conversational, but I had nobody to speak with and I've lost a lot of it. Planning on a concerted effort in 2020. The joke was awful. It was a French "dad joke". But I laughed like a nut case even though it was awful and I should have groaned, simply because I "got" it. Humour is very cultural and can be very specific, so I was totally not expecting to "get" the joke. As for telling jokes in another language ... oooooh boy. Not even going to attempt that one. Multi-lingual comedians have my absolute respect.

I start thinking more about the concept I'm writing about and not the individual words and accidentally put "their" instead of "there", "whose" instead of "who's", "were" instead of "where". I'd give people a break, it can get tiresome sometimes. It doesn't mean they don't know their grammar, it just happens.

Lydia Morningstar that’s normal. You can’t lose an accent you can only learn to put one on. And when you’re a teenager in a class of other judgemental teenagers most people don’t have the guts to experiment with putting on an actual French sounding (or whatever language) accent.

That's a huge problem in many countries. If teenagers and even some teachers were not so judgmental we would all speak at least one more language than our own. I noticed that the reason why I find so hard even today to improve my english level at speaking, when I am obviously able to create sentences when I am writing, is because of that terrible experience of english class with the whole crowd laughin at me when I was trying to pronunce things correctly. Today I feel ashamed before even trying to speak. I do it anyway but I feel bad and I don't know if that feeling ever goes away.

@@annesauviller3069- Learning something is always your own responsibility though. Not the responsibility of your teacher, or the government, or anyone else. French education in the Netherlands (where I'm from) is terrible, so as an adult (living in Brussels) I did everything I could to learn to improve my French. I don't want to sound mean or harsh, but a lot of people here act as if their high school language classes are their only chance at learning the other national language, and if you can't speak it by the time you graduate, then it will never happen. The truth is that most of the learning takes place outside of the classroom.

Par contre les erreurs grammaticales qui passent pour des expressions correctes sont légion. Love this! I’m from America and throughout middle school I took french (I love French, my mom used to live in Paris and is still fluent) and I love to learn the language. However my high school doesn’t offer French (only Spanish) so I’ve been watching French media to extend my education. It’s really nice how there’s subtitles.

Me: okay I want to say ”I will eat” so I will use the long-future verb so I need to say the person, (Je) then say it's present form of aller (vais) and put the perfect infinitive at the back (manger) so... Je Vais Manger. The person I'm talking to: Ouijevoulaismangeravectoicestok?

SO much fun. A totally new level of humour, listening to the French to Belgium accent switch over, while reading the subtitles .. it was like mental gymnastics. And you pulled off humor that transcends culture, funny is funny.

If you are currently living in Paris and its suburbs I think so, otherwise people are generally nice in France! So could've been weird to hear "une croissant" but definitely not something to laugh at you.. Especially when people talk french way better than most of us when it comes to english! :) We are just a little bit to proud sometimes about the complexity of our language in its written form but i'm not sure this is really a matter we have to be proud of ahaha
