Asking my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ for prayers for my 91 year old father, James. His journey to our Lord is now imminent. He and my mother are, and always have been, devout Roman Catholics and they gave me the greatest gift, the faith of the Church. As a beautiful vocalist, he devoted a large part of his life leading the choirs, putting on the Passion plays and Midnight Mass music. In his later years he served as head usher. He and my mother spent their lives serving the Church and setting a beautiful example of what it means to be a Catholic to me and my family. May he know the eternal joys of celebrating the eternal Mass in the presence of the Sacred Heart of our Lord and the Immaculate Heart of our Blessed Mother. There are two types. One is the charismatic gift of speaking in tongues that the Holy Spirit decides when to give it to a willing individual. It then needs to be followed by interpretation of tongues by the Holy Spirit to understand the message. This is for the community. The other type of tongues is prayer tongues which is used to pray for others or to praise God. Once you yield to this type of tongues, you can use it when you want.

Why does St Paul say in 1Cor14:2 say that " the one who speaks in strange tongues does not speak to others because no one understands him"? Why would the gift of interpretation be needed and given if not to explain what was said? St.Paul makes us understand that this gift is more to build up the person to whom it is given, unlike other gifts which are given to build up the church. May God bless us all with His love!

And it edifies my Sprit body and soul.(the body) Based on my personal experience, the annointing of the Holy spirit (work of the holy spirit ) can easily flow upon your my life and my ministry in the church without obstacles or congestion. Looking at Saints' lives, all miracles (which of course come from God), are never "for fun" / show off / personal pleasure, but usually fall into 2 categories - mercy, or conversions. Thus it would be logical that "tongues" are meant for the same - conversions. Like at Pentecost. So being a gift (charism), it cannot be demanded. There are some protestant evangelicals (and sadly, "catholic charismatics" who didn't hear Dr Pitre's talks), who say you can not only ask for the gift, but "lubricate" your tongue by going "ee ee ar ar obladi oblada" and then your tongue will be loosened. (As if the Holy Spirit ever needed human help to "warm up"). The worry is - what sort of "spirit" is then enabling this, since we cannot "demand" of God what gift to give us. God is not a vending machine; though He is merciful, but babbling away in unknowable language is neither mercy nor bringing conversions. So as I heard & thought more, I became suspicious, and withdrew from the charismatic prayer sessions.

My amateur discernment of tongues as an 'angelic language' is whether or not it helps build the Kingdom. The debate itself doesn't seem to build the Kingdom, because it seems to pit one group of Catholics against the larger other group. But who knows - I can't say that speaking in tongues absolutely does not help the Kingdom, but only that I can't see the benefit.

Thanks Dr. Pitre, here in the Philippines (most of which are Charismatic Catholics) the teaching on "speaking in tongues" are open to different interpretations to the point of being taken out of context and worst used for personal glorification.. The fullness of glorification of our Lord Jesus Christ is set aside and mysticism is more highlighted.

When I speak in tongues, I can understand what is being said, it is not a tongue that is in need of interpretation. I am pretty sure that if I spoke in tongues with a group of charismatics, they too would understand what is being said . the holy spirit told me too slow down so that I may understand what is being said. The main message Abba Father is about the need for devotions to the cross of Jesus Christ.

about 5 years ago, i started speaking in a tongue that i don't understand, but i think it's a gift of God for me to communicate to Him only. i only speak this tongue when i'm talking to God or the angels maybe. when i speak in this tongue, my spirit tells me that i'm praying to God, and even though i don't know what i'm saying, God does...

I have witnessed tongues in a personal setting by a dearly loved one. This person was under high emotional stress and praying aloud in English at a set pace. Then there was a shift in pitch and lace and tears flowed. This was not in a congregational setting, this was a personal direct prayer to God. Recall Paul prayed more in the spirit than any if his readers. So this is not tongues used to edify the body of the church in a congregational setting. It is deeply personal. I do not speak in tongues. I speak English, Spanish, and German. However, I think praying in you own language is similar to dial-up internet, effective, but slow. Praying in tongues bypasses the mind, it is much more pure, it is beyond words. This is similar to high-speed internet. God knows your request before you do. How is it possible that you do not know what to pray for in your own language? This is because your spirit communicates with God on a purer level. There are no translation problems. Comparatively, those who tout “Sola Scriptura” always seem to be in disagreement on some biblical point. Why? Words mean different things to different people within a set language. No the problem is compounded when translations are used. Have we not all dealt with various translations of the Bible? Do we not draw back to Hebrew, Aramaic, Koine Greek in order to better understand what is really meant? Praying in the Spirit has none of these translational issues. Those tuned in-you and God-communicate in a pure spirit level where exact meanings are instantly sent, received, and understood. Human language has limits. Those started at the Tower of Babylon, when God changed the single unified language of the entire earth into human languages which lead to division and separation. Behold, those building the Tower moved away and populated the earth. Today, we all are trying to understand each other at a human level and we are not doing a great job of it. Prior to Babel, everyone had the SAME EXACT language. There were no translational issues. In the future, during the Millennium and beyond, there will be one language. Dr Pitre, wouldn't it be possible that being an say Indian from India and I pray in Latin the Lord's prayer, Ave Maria, Glory be but have no understanding of what I have said? I have read it or learn it by rote but wouldn't have a clue where I'm at unless I have a translation beside what I have prayed in Latin. Would St Paul be ambiguous in his teaching? We are so into weaponised ambiguity because of Modernism - synthesis of all heresies, that we take what we want through Relavitism.

I would like to also know what those people are hearing , seeing or feeling when they start uttering sounds from their mouths. Something must be going on because only uttering sounds and falling to the ground etc. cannot be messages from theHoly Spirit.

Key verse: 1 Corinthians 14:2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. It's a supernatural uttering and not a natural one - a spiritual language and not a natural one. It's worth noting that in 1 Cor 14 the apostle Paul makes no mention at all of any foreigner walking into the church but only unbelievers and uninformed people. The Catholic dictionary states that the glossolalia is meaningful because it requires interpretation. In my opinion the gift of tongue or the gift of speaking in a tongue is to build up the local church or a localized part of the body of Christ. For worldwide evangelism Marc 16:17b says "they will speak in new tongues." That sign/gift/grace first appeared on the Day of Pentecost.

I suppose the Holy Spirit can intercede for us, prayers which communicate our deepest longing for God in ways extraordinary for the people who are in a state of deep spiritual union with God, expressed in unusual or extraordinary ways of speech. The Old Catholic Encyclopedia states the following in this regard: “...the Corinthian peculiarities were ignoble accretions and abuses. They made of "tongues" a source of schism in the Church and of scandal without (14:23). The charism had deteriorated into a mixture of meaningless inarticulate gabble (9, 10) with an element of uncertain sounds (7, 8), which sometimes might be construed as little short of blasphemous (12:3). The Divine praises were recognized now and then, but the general effect was one of confusion and disedification for the very unbelievers for whom the normal gift was intended (14:22, 23, 26). The Corinthians, misled not by insincerity but by simplicity and ignorance (20), were actuated by an undisciplined religious spirit (pneuma), or rather by frenzied emotions and not by the understanding (nous) of the Spirit of God (15). What today purports to be the "gift of tongues" at certain Protestant revivals is a fair reproduction of Corinthian glossolaly, and shows the need there was in the primitive Church of the Apostle's counsel to do all things "decently, and according to order" (40). …Faithful adherence to the text of Sacred Scripture makes it obligatory to reject those opinions which turn the charism of tongues into little more than infantile babbling (Eichhorn, Schmidt, Neander), incoherent exclamations (Meyer), pythonic utterances (Wiseler), or prophetic demonstrations of the archaic kind.”

1 Cor. 14:14-15 - This one could easily take a few pages to explain properly, but I'll try and sum it up as briefly as possible..... Again, you have to go to the Greek. This passage hinges on the Greek word “akarpos” - which can be used in two different ways: in an active sense and in a passive sense. Many people subscribe to a passive usage, i.e. my understanding is unfruitful ( *to me* ), or my understanding produces no fruit *in/for me* . In short, what I'm saying doesn't benefit me as I have no idea what I'm saying even though I am praying “in the spirit” (as defined in my post below). Given that Paul, in his letter, calls for _clarity and understanding_ at a public worship such that _everyone there can benefit_ , an *active* understanding of ‘akarpos’ makes considerable more sense in light of what Paul is trying to convey: that is, my understanding is unfruitful *for others* , or my understanding produces no fruit *for/in others* . In other words, the fact *I* understand what I’m saying does not benefit anyone else as they don’t speak my language. This is not just my view, but also the view of a number of Biblical commentators (Clarke, Barnes, Coffman, Gill, Vincent, Wesley, Abbott, Calvin, Coke, Meyer, Edwards, Schaff, et al.) Now, before you think using this passage with an active meaning is something far-fetched, or a new concept, or a recent ‘theory’, consider Luther’s Bible of 1534 - written almost 500 years ago, and some 30 years before King James was even born. This same passage is rendered (in English) “...my understanding *brings no one fruit* ”. Even almost 500 years ago, the idea of this passage having an active usage was nothing new. Indeed, an active understanding/reading fits better with Paul’s intent of clarity so _all_ may benefit. Further, it's clear here the speaker is praying in a particular (known) language; his native language. It seems it is mainly those Christian denominations that adhere to the modern understanding of tongues, as redefined by the Pentecostal church in the early 1900’s, that subscribe to the passive usage of the phrase. Again, it's the only possible way for the passage to work to fit the modern concept of "tongues". There’s just no evidence whatsoever of modern tongues-speech here. The speaker understands perfectly well what he’s saying; again, it’s the _audience_ who doesn’t understand, and thus does not benefit. Verse 15 - In this verse, the speaker will 'pray/sing in the Spirit' (as defined in my post below), and will pray with his mind/understanding. The context requires that praying/singing with 'his mind' is understood to mean with his mind bearing fruit or being fruitful to others. Again, the active sense as already defined in verse 14. It's all about real, rational language. One the speaker knows, one the audience does not.

SPEAKING IN TONGUES PART 2 As I flipped through my bible(Holy), I discovered man may want to use KNOWLEDGE (filthy) to explain the word(living- highly spiritual) and may get it very, very WRONG. As I flipped my bible(Holy), I discovered that on the day of Pentecost, the brethren were all in ONE ACCORD(LOVE, FAITH) and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing wind, and filled all the house where they were sitting. Now, if a man of knowledge (filthy), picks up his bible and reads this literally, he will get it very, very WRONG. What does it to be in One accord, sitting down? Okay, this is what it means: a man left his house and told his disciples that he was coming back to them although not in the COMPLETE PHYSICAL REALM, but a realm next to the physical. He will COMFORT them and will manifest himself through them by miracles, signs and wonders. Now, how can he do this if not through his SPIRIT(HOLY GHOST)! Yes, his spirit is called the HOLY GHOST, and the Spirit of the father(Jehovah) is called the HOLY SPIRIT. Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit can never, never be the same. The ghost of a man(Christ) and the Spirit of a man(Jehovah) can never, never be the same. They are one in TERMS of LOVE and only LOVE and not power. Now talking about Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit, it is used interchangeably in the bible but it is the WILL of God at these last days to expose MYSTERIES hid from the FOUNDATION of the WORLD. Although the greatest Mystery is the death and resurrection of the great king(Jesus Christ). Now talking about Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit, even Professors of Theology do not know this, unless if they go online to read books of the writer, or still, read this piece. Now evil spirits and satan(third personalities in the world of darkness) is not the same, likewise Holy Spirit and Holy Ghost can never, never be the same. The Spirit (Holy) of the father (Jehovah) is like a million soldiers of a King(Jehovah). He(Jehovah) gives them order(holy) and they obey. His spirit (holy) is also along the tunnel of hell, to turn souls of men back(from the tunnel) and his Spirit is in the form of BIRD. Now Holy Ghost cannot be in form of bird along the tunnel of hell. The Spirit of a man(Jehovah) is at a REALM to dispute any power(DARKNESSS very, very possible. Forces that are neither of light nor of darkness not possible and forces of light(very, very impossible) that will want to RISE above the THRONE of GOD(Jehovah). Now talking about speaking in TONGUES, it is called BAPTISM of the HOLY GHOST. Once a man gives his life to Christ, he is expected to continue running the RACE(heavenly) FERVENTLY until such a man receives most of these gift. One of them is the gift of tongues. Now any man that sits down to learn this gift, has already incurred satanic tongues. He(She) should first and foremost stop speaking, and then go for DELIVERANCE , after which such a person may enter into fasting for God to empty him or her of the evil accumulated (satanic tongues) and for the spirit (Holy Ghost) to give him or her his GIFT(tongues). Now a man(Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Teacher, Pastor) that DOES NOT HAVE THIS GIFT(TONGUES) is the MOST CHEATED MAN on earth. Why? Why? Yes, now if an Apostle(Paul) says that one who speaks, EDIFIES himself. Do you know what it means? Okay, this is what it means, a man that CLAIMS he is a born again and does not yet have the gift of the tongues is LIKE A CAR RUNNING ON A SQUARE TYRES. A CAR running on a square tyres will TRULY GET to its DESTINATION (HEAVEN) but with a lot and alot of STRESS(frustration of continually praying in English, frustration of continually fasting, frustration of ...), now one cannot and will not COMPARE A SQUARE TYRES with a ROUNDED TYRES(gift of the tongues). Yes, once such a man has that gift, he will see himself LIVING A RIGHTEOUS and HOLY LIFE with less STRESS, but this exclude such a one being beyond temptation. Such a person could still be tempted and can still(very, very possible) fall into TEMPTATION and still be speaking in tongues. A man of knowledge (filthy) will be PROVOKED why will God not collect such a gift seeing he or she has BACKSLIDED. Yes, God is not man and can never, never be man. Okay, this is the reason why a man that had the gift(tongues) and backslide, God will not collect such a gift: 1. The person is already a GHOST to the gift(tongues). If any man will be able to explain this, then God will vacate his throne for such a one. Call all Professors of Theology let them try. Now, here is the meaning, if a man(Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Teacher, Pastor) who has the gift of the tongues BACKSLIDE, he will be a GHOST unto speaking in TONGUES. The person is like a man that MARRIES (has been given the gift tongues), and later he decide to go after other women(harlot). If his wife is very, very faithful to him, then the man(husband) is truly a GHOST(false husband) unto the woman. Now the woman cannot or may not know that the husband in question is a GHSOT(false husband) unto her, but the devil knows that the man(husband) is truly a Ghost(false husband). Why? Why? Yes, any man(Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Teacher, Pastor) that sleeps with a woman that is not his wife, has a CLONE(false replication of the inward being) with the devil in the darkest region of drakness. Yes, the devil knows then, it was to SHOW(GLORIFY God) the people that came for WORSHIP at Jerusalem that God is truly ALIVE, and he(HOLY GHOST) can only PROVE that through TONGUES of MEN(LANGUAGES) on the disciples, so that people from various nations could HEAR them speak and give glory to GOD. Yet, even at that, many as at then DOUBTED, signifying the LEVEL of CARNALITY of the worshippers then. But today(LAST DAYS), one cannot speak with tongues of men and CLAIM to be speaking in tongues except such a man will LEARN it through men. And when one learns a language through man, it is not speaking in tongues anymore seeing the effect that it was meant to achieve on the people that came to worship those days yielded RESULT. Yes, as result, the SPIRIT of God(Holy Spirit) used Apostle Peter to preach(Death and Resurrection) unto the people, and the Spirit of God(Holy Spirit) convicted them and they gave thier LIVES to God, and afterwards most of them received the gift of the HOLY GHOST(TONGUES) and the gift of the Holy Spirit (gift of healing, gift of deliverance, words of wisdoms, miracles, interpretation of tongues(gift of God) etc. Now talking about interpretation of tongues, it is only a foolish man that would want one that speak in tongues to also interpret it, when the gift(interpretation) has not been given to him. The tongue given to him is for HIS EDIFICATION. Men should also work(divine) hard, so that they also would speak in tongues and edify themselves instead of depending on others for EDIFICATION. Paul says that. the Spirit prays for us by groans. So, that is the only language God the Father understands ? Holy Spirit praying for us ? That is blasphemy. Holy Spirit, Who is coequal and cosubstantial with Father and Son hears and answers our prayers. Paul's 3 accounts of encounter with Jesus are contradictory.

There is absolutely nothing mysterious about Biblical "tongues" - and there is only one type - when referring to something spoken, they are nothing more than real, rational language(s); usually unknown to those listening to them, but always known by the speaker(s) - it’s their native language (in some cases, it is a language the speaker has learned). In contrast, the “tongues” Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians are producing today is an entirely self-created phenomenon. It is non-cognitive non-language utterance; random free vocalization based upon a subset of the existing underlying sounds (called phonemes) of the speaker’s native language, and any other language(s) the speaker may be familiar with or have had contact with. It is, in part, typically characterized by repetitive syllables, plays on sound patterns, alliteration, assonance, and over-simplification of syllable structure. It is also interesting to note that any disallowed sound combinations, i.e. consonant clusters, in the speaker’s native language are also disallowed in his/her tongues-speech. Further, this subset of phonemes typically contains only those sounds which are easiest to produce physiologically. There is absolutely _nothing_ that “tongues-speakers” are producing that cannot be explained in relatively simple linguistic terms. Conversely, when it comes to something spoken, there are absolutely _no_ Biblical references to “tongues” that do not refer to, and cannot be explained in light of, real rational language(s), though it may not be the explanation you want to hear, and it may be one which is radically different from what you believe, or were taught. _Nowhere in the Bible is modern tongues-speech advocated or evidenced._ “Praying in the Spirit” does _not_ refer to the words one is saying. Rather, it refers to how one is praying. In the three places it is used (Corinthians, Ephesians, and Jude), there is absolutely zero reference to 'languages' in connection with this phrase. “Praying in the Spirit” should be understood as praying in the power of the Spirit, by the leading of the Spirit, and according to His will. Most people who use ‘tongues’ are very keen on describing the ‘experience’. Indeed, for those that use it, it is very psychologically, physically, and spiritually fulfilling. It’s almost like primal screaming. When people practice ‘tongues’, they feel a sense of sweet release and inner peace, in that virtually all stress can be gone after the experience. People describe the experience, but in examining the “mechanics” behind it…well, not so much. When a person has experienced tongues, s/he is absolutely convinced as to the ‘scripturalness’ of his/her experience, and the correctness of his/her doctrinal beliefs - this, despite the overwhelming scriptural absence of anything remotely akin to what they’re doing. I'm not doubting or questioning the 'experience'; as mentioned, glossolalia as the spiritual tool that it is, can be very powerful and, for many people, the experience is profound. As one commenter put it, “Speaking in tongues distracts the ego/analytical/conscious mind while leaving the subconscious (the heart) wide open to import the divine." Both the spiritual and physical benefits of using this tool are also well documented. Again though, it is important to note that this same statement can be made for virtually _any_ other culture that practices glossolalia. Religious and cultural differences aside, the glossolalia an Evenki Shaman in Siberia, a vodoun priestess in Togo and a Christian tongues-speaker in Alabama are producing are in no way different from each other. They’re all producing their glossolalia in the exact same way; they just have different explanations and beliefs as to why they’re doing it, and where it comes from. “Tongues” is to some Christian believers a very real and spiritually meaningful experience but consisting of emotional release via non-linguistic ‘free vocalizations’ at best; non-cognitive non language utterance - the subconscious playing with sounds to create what is perceived and interpreted as actual, meaningful speech. “In _some_ cases, I would argue that it is clearly a self/mass delusion prompted by such a strong desire to “experience God” that one creates that experience via “tongues”. Indeed, as one writer puts it: “You want this to be real. You’ve convinced yourself it’s real. You’re improvising the sounds, but there is nothing about what you’re doing that cannot be explained in natural terms. The only reason it sounds like a language is that you want it to sound like a language. But it’s not.” Known by many different names, “tongues”, “glossolalia”, or more accurately “non-cognitive non-language utterance” (NC-NLU), is practiced by many cultures and religious beliefs from literally all over the world; it is relatively new to Christianity and certainly not unique to it. As a point of note, I’m a Linguist, and let me also add here that I am neither a so-called ‘cessationist’ nor a ‘continuationist’ - I do not identify with either term; in fact, I had never heard the two terms until just late in 2016. As far as I’m concerned, quite frankly, since the Biblical reference of “tongues” is to real, rational languages, obviously “tongues” haven’t “ceased”; as far as I’ve been able to ascertain, people still speak. Another aspect of the modern tongues phenomenon is, of course, the concept of ‘interpretation’. “Interpretation of tongues”, which goes hand-in-hand with ‘speaking in tongues’, may also be said to be a self-created phenomenon. Interpretation is a ‘spiritual improv’ of sorts, inspired by one’s deep faith and beliefs. What do I mean by this? Well…. Interpretations are typically characterized by being inordinately longer than the actual glossic utterance, rather generic and non-specific in nature, and perhaps not surprisingly, open to multiple non-related ‘interpretations’. In other words, have ten interpreters listen to a glossic string and you’ll get ten different (typically unrelated) “interpretations”. In ‘tongues’, ‘The big brown dog is slow’, can also be ‘The small white cat is quick’. These latter two characteristics (‘generic-ness’ and multiple interpretations) do not suggest anything that is divinely inspired. It fails even the most basic tests and criteria that define ‘communication’ itself. A common come-back to the multiple interpretation issue is that God/the Holy Spirit gives different interpretations to different people. As one writer put it rather succinctly, “Pentecostal Darwinism does not exist - there’s no mutation or transformation of one message into several for the sake of justifying what is an obvious discrepancy. If this were the case, it would completely eradicate the need for ‘tongues’ in the first place”. In Corinthians (with the exception of the few places Paul mentions the gift of tongues together with the other spiritual gifts) Paul is simply addressing real language issues facing a multi-cultural, multi-lingual population in a large city situated on not one, but two major seaports. So, if the ‘gift of tongues’ (more properly, the ‘gift of languages’) is not modern tongues-speech, or xenoglossy, what exactly is it? The ‘gift of languages’ is the God/Holy Spirit -given ability, talent, knack (call it what you will), i.e. _the gift_ of being able to learn languages more easily and quickly than most others, but more so, as far as Paul was concerned, using that ability in spreading the message of Christianity, edifying the church, and to the further glory of God in general. This can be said of any of the gifts Paul references. They are God/Holy Spirit given abilities; thus, to be clear, they are supernaturally given. But the gift of languages, the least of all gifts, is nothing more than that. It is not xenoglossy, nor is it modern tongues-speech. The idea that the gift of languages is xenoglossy comes from the false assumption that the crowd at Pentecost, as described in Acts 2 narrative, was linguistically diverse. A closer examination reveals that this was not the case, but that’s a story for another day. And yes, anyone can learn a language, just as anyone can learn music, or advanced mathematics, etc., but as I think anyone will admit, there are those people who are just _gifted_ with these abilities and seem to accomplish them effortlessly. Just as some may be gifted with knowledge and wisdom, healing abilities, etc. I believe they all may be considered gifts given by the Holy Spirit. How one choses to use these gifts may further define them, but it seems, as far as Paul was concerned, he was concerned about their use in a religious setting. In short, ‘tongues’ (read, ‘languages’) - the divine gift, is the ability to speak and be understood through real-language barriers.

Peter, claimed falsely by catholics to be their first pope, spoke in tongues on the day of Pentecost. It was clearly part of the gift from Jesus that was prophesied. The Holy Spirit or Comforter. A gift not given to either Augustine nor Thomas Aquinas since they had no understanding of it's significance. Peter clearly stated that first day, what is required to receive this gift and all the 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit. Catholic doctrine precludes these receipt of these gifts elaborated on by Paul beginning in 1 Corinithians 12. The catholic church's doctrine keeps it's followers ignorant and unable to receive these gifts of The Holy Spirit to make the church heirarchy seem indispensible. It is the apostasy that is destroying their laity and results in the events described in chapter 17 of The Book of Tbe Revelation of Jesus Christ. These gifts are available to all who follow the teachings of Jesus, Peter, Paul and all of the original Apostles. The so called "catholic church fathers" had no knowledge of these gifts. They were frauds.
