Tongues ARE used for mission work in Scripture. See the entire chapter 2 of Acts. Also, the tongues "as the Spirit gave them utterance" are identified by actual languages: "And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?" (Acts 2:8 ESV). As a result of this speaking in tongues and Peter's sermon, 3000 people were converted and baptized.

Tongues are used in personal prayer. Tounges with interpretation is used in a fellowship meeting where 3 or more believers are gathered too.

Speaking in " tongues", in the original koine greek of the N.T., means " a language".On Pentecost this angelic language was the initial sign that the believers had recieved the Holy Spirit and a sign to the unbelieving crowd. Three times the men in the crowd said," How hear we them in our own languages?" The apostles, and other believers were speaking in the same angelic language, but those in the crowd heard and understood what was being said in their own languages as a sign to them.

You do not need to speak in tongues in order to have the Holy Spirit. First off the Holy Spirit is what one of the things you receive once you are saved. Isaiah 59:21 is probably one of my favorite scriptures regarding this blessing. Another reason speaking in tongues is not a sign of you having the holy spirit, is that tongues is a gift, and just as Paul sarcastically puts it in 1 cor. 12:28. Now i know that certain churches teach speaking in tongues to be a sign, but is the word not enough.

Thank you for this encouragement. I was born again in 1983 when I was 18 and 3 months later I received Tongues without even having gone to a church by then, ( I Attended a hospital chapel because I was visiting the sick on my own in obedience to The Word)and I did not know what it was until I read it in the Bible. So NO one can make me deny my experience. The gift of Tongues was so much in operation through me ( and prophecy) in the early days and it helped me out of many harmful situations and taught me how to pray for others even if I did not know what to pray about. I am shamed today that it has been greatly reduced in my life as I have become disillusioned with 'Church-ness' and have not attended regularly for years. Although I am a Christian who still has the desire to be with Christ, after serving in my calling and due to many circumstances and other people close in my life, making everything difficult, I have failed God in serving Him and I failed to speak in tongues or to defend it! I have been made to be ashamed by your teaching which is a good thing!

Churches have become watered down to not offend the non believer because if they were true believers they would be all speaking in tongues and PROUD OF IT!!! Keep away from luke warm churches and pray to find true believers to connect with. the luke warm places are depressing to say the least. keep fighting the good of fight of honesty for Gods Word! we need to take the STAND OF TRUTH AND HONOUR TO OUR KING! Three examples of the gift of tongues being exercised; Acts 2:3-13, Acts 10:44-48, and Acts 19:6 Tongues must be interpreted. 1 Corinthians 14:27-28, If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. Tongues=human languages

+Luis Prado ...Tongues has TWO distinct areas of use...1) Private prayer life.....2) Public Church Service......in the private prayer life it is "Speaking directly to God"....and it is "speaking mysteries"..(1st Corinth. chapter 14)......only in the PUBLIC FORUM does it need to be interpreted ....not in the private prayer life... Paul says to the Corinthians, "I thank my God I speak in tongues more than ye all.".....He had trained his mind to silently speak in tongues ALL DAY LONG....something the Corinthians had not done yet apparently.
@tylerk8444

Luis is absolutely right. Tongues must be interpreted. In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul is addressing the Corinthian church. He's addressing tongues in the corporate setting. Much of what he says could be interpreted in a sarcastic manner. So when Paul says, "Whoever speaks in a tongue speaks to God and not men," it's very likely that this is sarcastic in that it is not in any way edifying to the body, which is the point of 1 Corinthians 12-14. When Paul says, "I speak in tongues more than all of you," it should be interpreted in light of Acts 2:4. Acts 2:4 is known languages, that were heard by foreigners. Paul was an apostle and a missionary to many lands in which he would not know every single tongue. It is very like Paul spoke in tongues more than everyone in order to communicate the gospel effectively by the power of the Holy Spirit. In no way is it some gibberish sounding "private prayer language." There's nothing in the Bible that mentions anything about having a "private prayer language." Lastly, the guy in the video says, "speaking in tongues is not a gift," because the word "gift" is not in the Greek. That's just bad biblical interpretation. The Greek word for gift is "charisma," the same word interpreted as "grace." Are we going to say "grace," undeserved favor, is "not a gift?" No. He then ends with the fact that it's a "manifestation" and that as a Christian "you can manifest it. You can bring it out." You do realize he's saying that you can manipulate the Holy Spirit, right? That statement is completely unbiblical because 1 Corinthians says that tongues, and all other "manifestations" or "gifts" of the Spirit, are apportioned by the Spirit, "as HE wills." We can't will ourselves to manifest a dang thing. Only the Spirit can do that, and He does it as He pleases for the glory of God, not our benefit. Don't follow this guy. He's a terrible teacher of the scripture.

Tyler K finally! I absolutely wholeheartedly agree with you. I have seen so many false tongues it's unbelievable. They're usually repetitious in that they use the same sounds over and over again. Why would the Holy Spirit speak in vain and repetitious prayer when the Lord hates that? People are being deceived into thinking that they can somehow, as you stated, force the manifestation of tongues. Everything you said was SPOT ON!

Lonnie Christopher, "He had trained his mind to silently speak in tongues ALL DAY LONG....something the Corinthians had not done yet apparently." is an argument from silence. There's nothing in the text that would imply or cause us to infer this argument. I would encourage you to make sure that when you make a claim, you make one that is defensible. This claim is wholly indefensible.

I've been watching your videos and I've seen the brief snippets in which you demonstrate your ability to speak in tongues, and I'm wondering: If what you are speaking is a real language (i.e. a language that has been used at some time by human beings for communication), then why does it sound like you're just cobbling together Hebrew and Latin-sounding phonemes that resemble neither language, nor any identifiable language spoken anywhere in the world?

Hello I am new to Arianism and biblical Unitarianism I find it fascinating and as a 63 year old man who became a Christian 10 years ago I have known only trintarian churches. I am increasingly being persuaded that Jesus was a man a wonderful man and my saviour and eternal king nut nevertheless a man. This does not make him any less awesome in my eyes indeed makes him much more understandable . I have prayed and spoken in tongues since converting but I have noted that sir Anthony Buzzard whom I have great respect for and admire his incredible depth of understanding does disagree with this man here in this video whom I also like and respect. Sir Anthony thinks the term tongues is misleading and should be called language and if it Is not an identifiable language then he feels that people are deceiving themselves.

@JeffMoser1
@JeffMoser1 9 жыл бұрын
Ok, there's a significant issue here, but first...this is about the 5th or so video I've watched after just finding your channel today, and I've been so thankful to have found it. I'm glad to find someone agreeing with me on the chronology of the week of the crucifixion and resurrection, for instance. I believe that as Christians we are steeped in the traditions and teachings of man and often ignore the truth of scripture, that instead of becoming a royal priesthood we have only become a new group of Pharisees, and that maybe this is beginning to fall away with such teachings. So I watch this video on a topic where I differ in your belief, and I'm trying to keep an open mind. But at around 8:50 in this video, you say, "...speaking in tongues is not a gift." Here's the problem I have... 1 Corinthians 12:1-10 The first use of "gifts" in verse 1 is indeed added in by the translators, just as it is where you refer to it in chapter 14. But then it appears in 12:4, clearly as χάρισμα -- the same word used for the unmerited gift of grace, and used well over a dozen times in this context. How do you get around that and still say that "tongues is not a gift?" It is also, as you say, a manifestation of the spirit, as indicated in 12:7. But how can you claim it is not a gift? I'm of the belief that this gift was given so that believers could communicate with others in the 1st century who spoke different languages. The Gospel could be more easily conveyed. It also served as a proof that the gentiles had also received the spirit. This was important for the early Jewish believers to make such a leap in thought, so they could accept the gentiles. I'm a bit fuzzy on applying it in common use today, and certainly not as "the proof" of having received the Spirit. But even so, I see that I still don't have a clear understanding of it and I'm willing to keep an open mind. But when I hear someone who seems to contradict scripture directly, I can't accept your teaching...at least not on this topic. I would appreciate any response you can offer to clear this up.

@JeffMoser1
@JeffMoser1 9 жыл бұрын
Well, +HDDude1981...you're free to believe what you want. The most important thing you can do in life is search for truth with an open mind. But your question is a bit out of scope of this video and thread. It's been my experience that when this kind of question pops up a bit out of place, it is usually bait for a discussion with an atheist who wants to argue, not someone who is seriously looking for truth. If that's you, well...I've already been down that road and have found it to be a fruitless exercise. But if that's not you, and if you're seriously looking for truth, wherever that may lead, I would suggest checking out the Christian perspective from someone like Ravi Zacharias, J. Warner Wallace or Lee Stroebel. Wallace and Stroebel were former atheists (can't remember if Ravi was as well), looked at Christianity from an evidence-based approach, and have made their findings available for others to consider.

Hey brother Jeff, I also, for many yrs have referred to Tongues as a Gift! I've been a born again Christian now since Aug. 84, been involved with many traveling evangelists and visiting pastors over the yrs, (as a drummer on Praise & Worship Teams) and heard tongues referred to as both a Gift & Manifestation, so I wouldn't really get hung up on that. GOD knows your heart, and that's what's important, whether you refer to tongues as a Gift or Manifestation. To me personally, I've been seeking to speak/pray in tongues since 92, so 'when' I receive it, to me, it will be a GIFT! Whether it be a 'gift' or 'manifestation', it is VERY important to every Christian! I've studied tongues and the Holy Spirit for many yrs. WHY I cannot speak/pray in tongues is a mystery to me! One of the most important things to me about being able to pray/speak in tongues, is that is edifies oneself, strengthens your spirit, and with practice, makes it much easier to HEAR from God, when you are praying. Just like weight lifters lift weights to build up physical muscles, praying in tongues builds up 'spiritual muscles', which to me is FAR more important than physical muscles. Also, since you are unclear whether you see the importance or significance of tongues Jeff, just seek God for answers and direction. I used to mock tongues back in the 80's. Long story; but God eventually led my wife & I to teaching on the topic, that made sense. Another bible teacher who has an amazing and anointed teaching on this topic is Andrew Wommack. You may have never heard of him. I only discovered him last August. He has a series called The New You and The Holy Spirit, which I Highly recommend, as it is a series. God Bless you!!!

An example during a time of praying for the sick at the hospital I went into a room and pray for a lady from my church and after I prayed she thank me for those words and she told me the words that was meaningful to her that I have said; however, I was shocked because I did not said none of those words. My friend, as many other commentators have said/picked you up on, you are often factually incorrect when it comes to scripture and biblical history. For example. No evidence of tongues used in missions? You know James said "Not everyone should be teachers". Show me the verse in scripture where it says ".... PRAYED using the gift of tongues". I can show you where it says "and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues... And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language." Acts 2:4-6. You guys confuse "Praying in the Spirit" (I.e. under the guidance of the Holy Spirit in God's will) with "the gift of languages" (which as tells us in 1 Cor 14:22 was given to spread the gospel across language barriers as a 'sign to unbelievers'. "Where there are prophecies; they shall fade, where there are tongues, THEY SHALL CEASE". I do not say they have but you foundation is a patchwork of your hopeful imagination.

I really don't understand what this man is trying to prove about speaking in tounges. I totally agree with him about eternal security, but his outlook on the gift of tounges is a joke. How can he honestly say, and we're talking about a man that devoted half his life to the studying the bible, that tongues is not for mission work? Seriously? What about 1 Corinthians 14:22 KJV Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. It's right there in black and white. Tongues are for the ones who DON'T BELIEVE. it doesn't say tongues are for those who believe. It's a shame this man spent his whole life in the bible and he can't interpret these scriptures. Very sad.

See, here are the problems with this. First of all, Jesus did not pray in the manner of "tongues" as Christians have adopted it to mean from the Bible. I'm sure that Jesus could speak any and all languages, but then again, that is EXACTLY what speaking in another tongue ACTUALLY means. It is only certain groups of Christians that have adopted the "babbling/gibberish" as a heavenly language when in FACT it doesn't say that anywhere in the Bible new or old testament. There are letters to the churches that Paul/Saul was working with. Paul was a Roman citizen, a Jew, and spoke more than one language. He was converting Gentiles and the church in Corinth was doing some really horrible things; sinful things. His letter was an intent to bring them back in and rebuke them with love. Corinth was a large hub of a city that hosted many different people from all over who spoke many different languages. Paul was telling this church that if they were teaching in languages that most people didn't understand without interpreters that it wasn't going to work. I'm providing a very good link with great information. Pray, study, pray, understand.

Another confused person. The Bible DOES NOT SAY PRAYING IN GIBBERISH! Tongues (plural) indicated various languages...clearly states it in fact. Don't change God's Word! When angels came to Mary to tell her she was going to give birth to our Savior, did she understand the angel? Did Joseph understand the angel when the angel came to him? What about everyone else who was visited by an angel? Then the language of men and angels are the languages that God provided to everyone on earth...not gibberish...it serves NO PURPOSE!

Hi John and Raven so sorry about that because it ought not to be. Thats why we ought to read the word and ask the holy spirit to give you revelation. You will never find God in religion. He is not the author of confusion. Of which religions create confusion

I'd went through the same confusing journey since I was 17 (now 48) and God opened my eyes eventhough I was slow to understand. For one, God has taught me that you really don't have to be a Christian or belong to any denomination in order to have a direct relationship with God. If you really notice about these denominations and religious groups, they're all segregated groups created by MAN based on differences of opinions and beliefs. God said if we are of his then we're all ONE in his body. There's no worldly labels in God's eyes. You're either of his or of the world. Now there's nothing wrong with being in these groups as long as they're truthful and keeps you close to God but at the end of the day, we all have our individual journeys and relationships with God whether we're part of groups or not. Two, Speaking in tongues was just they way they phrased it back in ancient times which sounds confusing in modern times but today, we say speaking our languages. What is Tongues? Tongues = forms of communication and expression, whether that be English, Spanish, Japanese, Sigh language, body language, facial expressions, slang, ebonics, etc Even writing and texting are forms of communications and therefore, it's a tongue. Yes, this sounds different than what we're taught by man, pastors, etc because they were also confused and taught by other confused people. A mother tongue: Mother tongue is defined as the first language that a person learns and the language used in that person's home country. An example of mother tongue is English for someone born in America. Some sources: Communication in the mother tongue www.youthpass.eu/cs/help/for/youth-initiatives/learn/information/kcmothertongue/ Top 10 communication tips when your mother tongue isn’t English www.seattleglobalist.com/2014/07/18/top-10-communication-tips-when-your-mother-tongue-isnt-english/27583

Last night while I pray, just dwelling in the spirit I felt the urge to say things I never had before, I felt the urge to, I dont know if it was real or not. I dont quite understand still, is this a gift we have to pray for to recieve or can the Father just place it upon us and its left to us to exercise the gift? Thank you.

Speaking tongues is just speaking the language you don’t know to those who speak that language. So you can witness and preach to them.

"face to face" "face Him to face" A huge difference. If you just put Him (meaning christ) in a lot of verses you will get a vastly different meaning out of it.

When Paul says, "I thank my God I speak in tongues more than ye all".....That is a man saying that it is so important, he has trained himself to do it all day long....MORE than all the Corinthians combined ??? That's a lot....that's dedication....that's mental training. Paul knew something that 99% fail to admit to themselves, and that's that tongues is vitally important for one's daily prayer life.......

Well, currently I am trying to get one of my best friends to know that he can speak in tongues, but he never believes me. So I've been researching to find evidence that he can. My mother said she went to college with you and that I should look at this. I must say, this truly blessed my life when I saw this. Thank you so much for this series of videos.

I totally agree and it is per the Bible. Praying in tongues does not need to be interpreted. How can people that say they are Christians and the Bible is the inspired Word of The Father of All, change words in the Bible?

I could really do with some advice and after following your videos I would value your opinion greatly. I am finding alot of born again Christian friends and fellow church members challenge me about the fact that I am baptised in the Holy Spirit (a seperate event to conversion and my water baptism), and they do not believe that me speaking in tongues is a heavenly language. My pastor doesnt believe that there is a place for the gifts of the Holy Spirit and that it was for biblical times only. One friend told me she believes we make up the language in our own mind and thay if tongues did have a place for today that I should only be used in and to edify the church alongside an interpretation. No spiritual gifts are allowed to be used in my baptist church as it is made up of damaged Christians after the toronto "blessing" manifestation swept through there old church in the 90s resulting in people barking like dogs and convusling on the floor. Totally un-Godly! My husband also has the gift of tongues and my mum also. Each of us use it in prayer together and when alone with God regularly. I am aware that satan has a conterfeit of tongues but a decerning born again believer should be able to tell the difference between a heavely language which can be stopped and started in a controlled manner by the speaker rather, than an uncontrollable outburts of repetative syllabols closely resembling a chainsaw. I find it very hard to even talk to other Christians about being baptised in the Holy Spirit as it is either frowned upon as make believe or compared to satanic copy cat manifestations. Have you any advice for me and my family as we are happy at our church except we feel it is putting the Holy Spirit in a box when He should be free to move as and when He pleases, should'nt He? Sometimes I get attacks telling me I am wrong and its all in my head which makes things harder. If you can advise me I would be so grateful. Blessings.

Dear dear Sister in the Lord. You are spot on with your experience of speaking in tongues. Treasure it and dont accept the lies and rubbish others that call themselves believers tell you. THEY ARE NOT TRUE BELIEVERS! Dont be scared to stand up for the TRUTH! if they dont like it, thats their problem not yours. We true believers MUST and I mean MUST stand for the truth of Gods Word! if we dont, who will??? dont go to that church, and if you cant find true believers, stay at home and pray with your family and fast and ask God what He wants from you. Do not trouble yourself to fit in with plainly 'misfits' from God! you are not called to do that! Satan has a hold of them because they choose not to seek Gods truth. Be blessed always x

we are the body and Christ is the head. Being a Christ follower, going to a building called a church is not required to work for God, but being in the presence of others who believe like you and study and walk the path God lays before us is not only necessary for you, but it strengthens others who may be new to the Way. I visit churches from Catholic to Baptist because I love the believers. The religion and traditions of religion are different, but the One we follow is the same - Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Not going to church is not a sin, but it is not healthy to your relationship with God and it is not recommended that we should try to make it on our own. Think about this and I will let you go, The Israelites walked in the wilderness for 40 years. The whole time they carried the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle. The men who carried the Ark had a very important job, but also the men who carried the altar and lamp stand and incense burners and curtains all had important jobs. But consider the man who carried the tent stakes - is his job less important that those who carry the Ark? Everyone has equal responsibility to the Lord God and if they fall short it puts everything in jeopardy of failure. You have something special to offer others and they have something special to offer you. I encourage you to find a church body to join. I pray this comment finds you attending a church already. Bless you.

Luke chapter 24 verses 44 through 51 behold I send the promise of my father upon you materi in the city of Jerusalem until you be indued with power from on high, this promise was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost Acts chapter 2 they were about 120 people at the temple in Jerusalem and all of them spoke in tongues as the Spirit gave the utterance even marry then they asked Peter what they must do to be saved and he said Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins. And 3000 baptized in the name of Jesus only on the day of Pentecost. Acts chapter 10 the story of the Roman soldier Cornelius and his salvation experience tafter hearing this the Apostle Peter commanded him to be baptized in Jesus name only for the remission of his sins. In fact peter knew that the Gentiles had received eternal life because he heard Cornelius speak in tongues. Acts chapter 19 disciples of John the Baptist they had never heard of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and when the apostles laid hands on them they began speaking tongues and prophesied the wonderful works of God, and Paul commands them to be baptised rebaptized in the name of Jesus only
