My name is Dave, I'm a British guy living in Helsinki with my wife (Cat) and my son (Leo) I've been learning Finnish "properly" for 3 months (since January 1st) which is why my Finnish is TERRIBLE (yes, I know it haha) This video is just to be used as a bit of a 'benchmark' for later on in this project/challenge to see how bad I was compared to 9 months later at the end of the year when the project finishes.

I very rarely comment on youtube, but I just had to express my appreciation. Finnish is hard, but your Finnish already sounds really good! I know it's easy to feel insecure when speaking a language you don't yet master, but I have got to say that you're doing extremely well! Any Finnish person would understand you when you speak. Don't feel too stressed out about conjugations and all that grammar, we in Finland often use informal language and the rules definitely blur when speaking. All of that knowledge naturally adds up when you speak and hear more people speak. :) Excited for the next video!

Ei suomi ole sen vaikeampi kuin mikään muukaan kieli, tämä on vain yleinen myytti nettipalstoilla. Lähinnä kysymys on asenteesta ja halusta oppia uusi kieli. Suomessa on sitä paitsi melko vapaa sanajärjestys, ei prepositioita (paitsi ennen ja jälkeen) taikka substantiivien sukuja. Lisäksi sanat lausutaan kuten kirjoitetaan, mikä ei ole useimmissa kielissä tavanomaista.

2:38 "se on hyvä oppia kieliä" means "It is good to learn languages", right? It would make sense in English, but we don't usually add the word "se" to statements :D it's good to learn languages = on hyvä oppia kieliä it's a nice day = on kiva päivä it's dark = on pimeää You have improved a lot, I can understand everything you say effortlessly. Jatka samaan malliin! =)

Man, you are an inspiration! I have watched some of your videos in the past and always enjoyed them. However this series is the reason I subscribed to you channel. I was just watching earlier videos I this series. I binge-watched all of them and during this one in particular, where you were taking the test of Helsinki University I found myself cheering for you out loud! I haven't rooted for someone so intensely since last year's hockey World Cup. I think your Finnish is much better than you give yourself credit for. Keep going for it, I also don't think people will make fun of you for not getting every word ending correctly or the pronunciation right. Vedät hienosti Dave! The Madventures guy Riku Rantala once wrote well in Hesari that the finns have very good english skills and vocabulary but are afraid to use it because of the fear of failing. I think the same applies to you that you have good finnish skills and vocabulary but you don't like to use it for the fear of failing.
