Omg i definitely feel you on the part where you basically “weren’t Rican because you couldn’t speak spanish” I’m learning spanish now but people don’t realize the dang identity issues that comes with people shaming you because you can’t speak Spanish + the colorist ones at that! I have kinky hair light/brown skin.. physically i just look black and i got so sick and tired of people making me try to speak Spanish to prove that i was rican and ugh! I wish someone taught me I had to learn on my own by listening to Latin rap and watching KZbin on Spanish instead of English, which definitely made me even more familiar with words not to mention I grew up around Spanish speakers so gives me even a more reason to learn. I’m still learning certain things and definitely not the best😂🤦🏾‍♂️ I can understand somebody but it’s hard for me to communicate back🤷🏾‍♂️

I wish I had your experience. My dad was PR and my mom was Mexican. My entire life I’ve been around Spanish in California- I learned nothing. I tried several times, took it in HS, got a c. The world translated for me, there was no pressure. No one made fun of me or maybe I didn’t know but I resemble the late Selena, so most people think I speak Spanish. Even my BFF is bilingual, we went Banda dancing on the regular. Now I’m in my 40’s, I have 3 kids, all with Latin names. My husband and I went to visit Mexico recently to see his family. He also doesn’t speak Spanish. We returned and I’ve been on a mission to learn. For the first time ever my mind has opened up to the language. I’m learning more than ever. I listen to you, listen to podcasts, read children’s books, do Duolingo, I have Lingopie, Quizlet and I write in a daily journal in Spanish. I’m determined to learn more and stop looking like the brownest gringa. We go back in December.I admire what you have done, it took humility to take it in.🙌🏽

There’s a huge difference between learning Spanish as an academic exercise and learning Spanish as a tool to communicate and form relationships with people. If you just want to learn how Spanish works, then yeah… grammar books are great. I’m trying to learn Spanish so I can communicate with Latinos here in my community on their level. If I can do that, then I feel like I’ve accomplished something meaningful. I suck at it right now but it’s just part of the process. Nothing good ever comes without the struggle….

I admire your story so much. For years I never thought I could learn spanish. At age 35 I started. Two years I am almost fluid. Serving as a missionary in Colombia gave me the motivation to learn to it. You know your bilingual when you hear two people speaking, one is translating but in your mind you say Why are they saying the same thing twice lol! I am Egyptian so Arabic is my native language. I started learning English at school from a very young age but as you mentioned I have no speaking skills. At the age of 14 too I started watching movies with subs but I did not understand all of them. It took me a while to realize that the movie has to be close to my level in English. And vecause there is no one to talk to, even though that was about 9 years ago and we have internet, I statrted talking to myself and shadowing. Then I majored in English which improved my academic writing skills only. I graduated in 2023.

Your story really resonates with me, as it is similar to mine. My father is Dominican and my mother is white. They separated when I was a baby and my (non-spanish-speaking) mother raised me in California. I was only around my Dominican family a few times a year and picked up a little Spanish. Fast forward to high school...I also learned basically nothing in Spanish 1 and 2, LOL. Anyway, I visited my dad in DR for the 1st time last year and I felt SO embarrassed about not speaking Spanish. It was a terrible feeling....I've been studying ever since using KZbin and podcasts. I take ALL of your advice. I've been able to comprehend way more, however I'm still very shy to speak. Sometimes I know what to say but the words just don't come out, lol. So I'm still working on actually speaking. I only have until May because I'm going back to DR. Thanks for sharing you story!

Ahh that sucks. I’m sure you’ll get there with enough drive and motivation and it helps to be around the locals as well. I don’t speak Spanish my self but I do understand basic convos. At age 5, my pediatrician told my mom that being multi-lingual would DELAY my development so it was only English from there. So much of your story resonates with mine. Being that we moved from NY to Jersey when I was young I also kind of rejected learning Spanish as a kid. But also a big part of it was the fact that Puerto Rican people would always do the same thing you said, make fun of my attempts and shame me for not knowing. In listening to your story it has dawned on me how much that affected me. Now I’m older and most of my elders have passed on and I hardly have anyone left who speaks Puerto Rican Spanish to me. This has sparked my interest in learning even now that I’m in my forties. I think we should encourage our children to learn and make sure we stand against the shaming in order to keep our culture going. Even though I hardly understand it there’s nothing more comforting than to hear some speaking specifically Puerto Rican Spanish because it takes me right back to being a kid who was loved by my family.

So glad I found this channel. I took Spanish from 8th grade through college and ended up with a degree in Spanish. However, I feel as if the emphasis was on reading and writing moreso than speaking. I still deal with confidence issues when speaking because I literally have to create the opportunities to practice. I read aloud and tutor students to keep from losing what I know. Thank you for sharing! I grew up in a predominantly white community in Arizona with my grandparents from my mom’s side of the family (Irish/Norwegian-American). My dad unfortunately was deported when I was young and I lost communication to my father’s side of the family from Zacatecas/Tijuana. I have since re-connected with my Mexican family after my sister found me on Facebook of all places and have since started to really connect with my Mexican heritage. I can relate to the teasing and confusion people have “you’re Mexican and don’t speak Spanish, what’s wrong with you?!” Lol and it has certainly motivated me to want to learn but also I want to speak with my family, especially the ones that don’t speak English or speak very little English and that’s most of them. I have been there too! I was born im Florida, my mom is from Nicaragua and my dad is from Honduras both fluent in spanish. When I was little Spanish was actually kind of my first language but my parents stopped teaching me because my school told them I would struggle with English plus the area we lived in didn’t have much spanish speakers, so sadly I lost it. Most of my youth I didn’t really care for learning Spanish but I still wanted to know what my relatives were saying. It wasn’t until high school when hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico and a huge amount of Puerto Ricans moved to my town; that’s when I really wanted to learn Spanish again. So I tried but it was a little hard because they speak faster and their dialect is different. After high school, I moved to Miami and that was a whole other ball game because it’s like another country and it’s Cuban Spanish. So at that point I really had no other choice but to learn ! I changed my phone settings to spanish, I listened to podcasts, music, movies to spanish and it worked! I was able to speak to customers at my work in spanish and it felt amazing. Yes I’ve made mistakes and went through some embarrassing moments but it’s worth trying. I still struggle with a stutter pero ahora puedo hablar mas fluidez!

So true! I spent years in high school and college studying Spanish but never really got fluent or comfortable speaking it, even. Fast forward 15 years and randomly I start learning Arabic and get very comfortable speaking it in under 1.5 year. Actually, I traveled to the middle east and used it successfully in very basic situations at 9 months of studying. Thanks for sharing your story. I can relate, growing up with Blacks they would say "Mexicans came over here we shouldn't have to learn Spanish, they need to learn English." I grew up thinking everyone that spoke Spanish was Mexican. It was also the only language offered aside from ASL when I was in elementary & middle school. My mom is 1/2 Puerto Rican but was adopted by a Black couple so it's all we knew. When I went to the Navy is when I was exposed to the vast Hispanic cultures. I was embarrassed how ignorant I was. By the time we located her biological family I was already in my mid-thirties. Now I'm about to be 43 starting fresh. Like you, school Spanish taught me nothing. Talking with my Mexican friends was helpful but when I went to college I thought switching to French was smart. NOPE! Lost the bit of Spanish I could speak & had to drop from French. Love the story . I hired for my daughter a Peruvian Lady when she was 3 months old to live and care for her when I was working, She is part of our family and we are part of hers. Now my daughter is fully fluent.I am trying to catch up now. The best part about it is that people always ask us if we are PR or Dominican .when I say no they ask about my grand parents lol.She now lives in Miami and says she is glad she can speak well. I resonate with your story so much. I had a similar experience. My mom is black American and dad is Afro-colombiano. My parents weren’t together, and I grew up closer to my mom’s side. In 2009 I went to Cali, Colombia for the first time and felt the frustration of language barrier, while trying to connect with my family. My Spanish was so basic from school. I was so tired of expressing gratitude with “gracias” especially in a Latin culture that values respect in the language. For example when we greet elders, we say “hola abuela, nombre de Dios, cómo está usted?” So many formalities and code switching between cousins and uncles in language expression. All to say, I was motivated when I came back to the states and it is still an ongoing journey of learning Spanish . Thanks for sharing.

Real talk! Similar study for me but fam is DR. I gave up when my cousins made fun of me. Now my kids are asking me to teach them with the little bit that I remember. You and your channel are a blessing and a great help for me to learn and now teach. Gracias por todo!

Omg I’m so glad I found your channel yes I can relate that’s why now at 22 I want to become fluent . it really makes me feel out the loop because I’m half Puerto Rico is my mom but we’re from Philly she never got a chance to grow up with her dad in San Juan plus he was in marines but yeah I definitely appreciate u sharing that cuz a lot of people like me can relate ,also when I tell people I am Puerto Rican and can’t fluently speak Spanish I just know they be judging me lol but honestly it’s a thing of me just fully appreciating my roots I’m excited to become Fluent 💓💓💓💓 , 🙏🏽 ✨✨✨

I know you might not see this since this is a month old video, but I am really grateful to have found you. My friend is from the Dominican Republic and speaks both Spanish and English pretty well, but when she and another one of our friends are in a call at the same time (we all play games together) they often speak Spanish that I don't understand. Up until now I haven't really had a real interest in speaking Spanish, but I came across a few of your videos, and something in me sparked, and now I really want to connect with her on a lingual and cultural level, because she and our other friend are really interesting people that I want to get to know better. Seeing these videos and hearing just how quickly I can get at least some basics down with a good amount of work put in really inspires me, and I just wanted to thank you. I'm one of those people with 5+ hours a day to spend just listening, and once I'm a little comfortable I'm going to tell them about my goal to learn it and have them help me continue, so I guess Ill be seeing a lot more of you in the future. :)

I love your story!! It is So inspirational! Wow! you Speak Spanish So Good!! I couldn't tell that Spanish wasn't your first language. I'm trying to learn to speak Spanish fluently, it's a desire of mine. I'm a person of color and live on the east coast, I've been mistaken for being Dominican Alot! So I would love to speak Spanish so that i could blend in! 😂, but I really do love the language and Spanish cultures.❤

Love hearing this story. I have struggled with Spanish since I was 16. I lived near the border in San Diego for years and took countless trips to TJ and other places in Baja. I have explored much of Latin America and have mainly dated women from LA. There are few things I want more than to be able to speak well and more fully experience beautiful spanish speaking cultures around the world. I have lived in Spain for the past 10 months and I'm finally making a little progress, but I have found myself in those situations you described on the beach so many times.. "you have lived here for almost a year and you barely speak?" or I get that disgusted look sometimes... or people switch on me/ignore me when I struggle. Part of me wishes I had learned in Guatemala or Colombia, as it can be more difficult in Spain. But I have connected with many Latin people here and I'm finally able to communicate a little with Spaniards--and have a connection. So happy to have found your channel. And hope to explore Puerto Rico one day

For the longest time I was having a problem learning the pronouns for the 7 Compound Tenses, but finding out that the actual Verb for all 7 is the same? It makes it all much more manageable now. 😃

Hahaha at least your teacher was from Spain! My poor students have a white Canadian French major as their Spanish teacher. Poor loves. I am grateful for my job but I do feel for my Dominican and Puerto Rican students. ❤️ There are so few Latino applicants for public education where I live. Thanks for this great channel. New sub.

I studied Spanish from 7th grade through college... I was pretty good. (I skipped a year in hs, too.)... but that was over 30 years ago. But I also played with it a bit over the years. I decided to pick it back up. Back to reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Never too late.

Such a similar experience. I would come home from learning in school and my parents would tell me that certain words, many at that time, weren't what they used. I gave up and have regretted ever since.
