As a Bulgarian learning Ukrainian, this was very useful as now I can recognise most of the words from which the months get their names and at first листопад was the only one I could recognise :)

this is so much fun! in Croatian, lipanj is June, kolovoz is August and listopad October. siječanj (January) and travanj (April) are the common ones. then it gets hotter and colder again sooner in Croatia. so must be that spring lasts longer in Ukraine :D

Just found this. I live in Canada. Chuckled at January, You explained "to cut" and in my mind, this is perfectly logical, you cut the forest in January and pull out the logs in the snow (used to be with horses) and then you explained about the snow and I was surprised.

Yes, when I learned the 'Croatian' names of the month it was explained that January was the month for woodcutting because there was little sap in the wood (cuts easier, dries faster).

It's also in Finland that January and February are commonly the coldest months. Periods of -25C to -35C are most likely to occur in these months, if they should happen.

These names are very similar to polish ones, btw. But the russian names are transliterations of Latin names of months.

Hi Ina, If you’re interested, the English term for «вересень» is “heather.” It rhymes with “weather.” Centuries ago in Scotland, they made a beer out of it, heather ale.

@@katherinemurphy2762 it´s getting even more strange and funny when you switch to german language which has "Erica" too, and "Heide" instead of Heather (both a name and the flower here too), while "Heide" can also mean: "pagan man" ;-) ... as a kid I wondered if pagan people preferred the heathen highlands, but it´s probably just accidental :P

well, birches dont bloom in march, it's too cold 🙂 the reason it is called that way is because we gather birch water in that period of time. by the way in belarusian march is сакавік, basecally like "juice time"

Interestingly, in Sanskrit, year can be translated as "varṣa" and in the past New Year used to be celebrated in September.

I just love this! I think it's very cool and unique that the Ukrainian months are based on Nature and natural observation. Would you consider doing vocabulary lessons on other natural phenomena? For example: trees (so I already know two tree names from your videos - Oak and Birch), and maybe types of birds... So, I'm guessing that the name of the singer Kvitka Cisyk means "flowers"? It is fascinating to learn these philosophical connotations.

I found it strange about the Russian language that the months' names have more in common with English than with Polish. On the contrary the Ukrainian language is in this regard quite similar to Polish, which is my native language. I didn't know this explanation for Czerwiec/Червень but seems to be quite convincing - at least as far as I am concerned ;)

Etymology of 'czerwiec' is actually more complex than that. The name of the color comes from the Old-Slavic čьrvь / чрьвь, meaning a worm. There is a worm whose dried and powdered red larvae were used as red dye (carminic acid) since the dawn of time. That little worm's name is... Polish cochineal (Porphyrophora polonica; Кошеніль польська; czerwiec polski) and their larvae are traditionally harvested in... late June. Could it be that 'czerwiec' means 'the month of cochineal'? As the name suggests, this bug is particularly abundant in the region of Central-Eastern Europe, so it's no surprise that production and export of carmine was specialty of medieval Slavic countries, the Kingdom/Duchy of Poland and Kievan Rus'. The Cherven Cities (, the bone of contention between early rulers of Poland and Rus' are said to have been on of trade centres for cochineal, so their name could also be derived from that worm as well.

Month names are funny. I don't know which languages have their own (Czech, Serbian, Polish, not Slovak), but when they do it's chaos, because some names are shifted by month. Květen is May (blossoms), April is duben (oak). Autumn months are září(9), říjen, listopad (leaf fall),prosinec(12), I'm sure that Serbs have this differently.

I have heard that Peter the Great introduced latin names on months in Russian. This didn't happen in Poland, although I don't know why March and May are latinised in Polish.

As a Polish Jew i say, that Ukrainian names of the months are better being "kosher", they are not connected to any Greek / Roman gods / deities like "marzec" (March) and "maj" (May) in Polish. Still Polish is better than English. :-) Not only the months, "sobota" is from Hebrew "shabat", from "to stop" / "relax" etc.

I am just learning the months and was surprised that they are different from the Latin-based names that I know. They were just senseless words to me, and I was building some kind of mnemonic aids for myself to keep them in mind somehow (like серпень sounds like serpent, so August is the snake month, and I keep an image of a snake in my mind for August :) ). Ukrainian and Russian are very similar to Croatian and Serbian. There is dialect in Croatian and Serbian from Croatia thats have a this pronunciation of I like in the month of February Sichanj in or version Is SJECNj but in the dialect sounds JE are replaced with I. As for the names of the month Croatian kept the Slavic names just like in Ukrainian language.I am amazed how Ukrainian and Russian language and traditions, ethnic music etc is similar to ours , more than other Slavics stay safe everyone 🙏
