awesome shooting. i dont know if its the same with all fish, but when i shoot grouper or snapper, I pull the line in like a mime. this engages the spear flops, and helps keep the fish secured. where as if the spear is just resting on the ground with the fish flopping, the spear tips can disengage.

how long is your bottom time and how long did it take to get to that time?
@andrewbaeza24744 жыл бұрын
On average I usually try to stay down for 45 seconds to a minute. My max down time is about 1:45. However, I encourage everyone to listen to what their body is telling them and not to rely on a watch or time. For example, I might have a better bottom time because I made a good descent and had a proper breathe up prior to the dive. My body is properly oxygenated and therefore I can stay down longer. But pushing yourself to stay down a certain time on every dive is dangerous and can lead to shallow water blackouts. Observe what you are feeling, is your body telling you that its ok to stay down longer? or are you forcing yourself and pushing your limits because you want to be down for a minute and its only been 30 seconds? Bottom line is rely on instinct and how you are feeling, not on a time on your watch. It takes a long time to train your body to do these things. When I first started I could barely dive down 10 feet, let alone hold my breath for longer than 20 seconds. It took me at least a year and consistent diving to really get comfortable in the water and to be able to hold my breath for over a minute. This obviously varies, but I would say don't worry about your down time! Focus on actively hunting, engaging with the environment, and listening to your body and your down time will naturally increase! Hope this is helpful!

Isn't that dangerous bleeding the halibut, ie; sharks and seals?
@andrewbaeza24744 жыл бұрын
Yes it is dangerous. You must always be aware of your surroundings in the water. However, I like to bleed the fish in the water as it makes it easier to clean and eat.

do you need a different license than the standard fishing license? if so where can it be purchased? great video by the way.
@andrewbaeza24745 жыл бұрын
The standard fishing license allows you to fish in fresh water. However, there are different enhancements you must purchase with the regular fishing license. To fish in the ocean, you must buy the ocean enhancement. There is usually an option to add this to your license upon purchase. Furthermore, in California, the spiny lobster season has just opened. To legally catch lobster, you must purchase the lobster enhancement and this comes with a report card so that you can record all of your catches. This information helps to protect lobster and ensure that they are not over fished! Hope this helps and thanks for the love!

Honestly couldn’t finish this video. The fact that you lost two and just happened to find them (very lucky) is upsetting. You need to go chase the spear and put your hand on the other side so that they don’t come off. Or better yet shoot butts with a pole spear and get your hand on quicker since they are so delicate and rip off so easily. I’ve been shooting halibut where you’re at for 18 years and it’s changed in that time and it needs to be protected by people like us. Great fish though. No hate, just conservation.
@1surfpesca_6 ай бұрын
Hey brotha, are there a lot of people getting at it in sd with pole spears?? I’m just starting out and prefer to learn with the pole spear for better technique, and honestly it looks bad ass getting a fish with a pole spear… I’m very interested in pole spearing some of these fish that people say you NEEd a spear fun for… You know any good groups to get with or where I can find good buddies in sd/ OC ?
@andrewbland62515 күн бұрын
Agreed. People need to learn to wait for a good shot, rather than shooting from that far away. Losing two fish in one dive is ridiculously bad.
