Spearfishing Southern California | Calico Bass and California Sheepheads

Another day spearfishing in Southern California! This time, we hit up the LA Breakwall on my Scout Inflatable boat. I had a tough day since I've been a little rusty, but together my buddy Mike and I did well. I personally caught a 3lb Calico Bass and Mike caught 3 California Sheepheads, 2 Calico Bass, and a Barred Sand Bass. At the end of our session, we decided to hunt around for some scallops and both limited out. Another great day out on the water.

Welcome to the sport! Yes there is haha. I’d definitely recommend going to SpearAmerica to check out the guns in person yourself. Riffe and Pathos are usually the top brands. Good luck and dive safe out there! I’d recommend checking out the regulations at Laguna. Most parts are a marine protected area. Palos Verdes is usually a great spot with plenty of kelp though

I spearfish in SD. The sea lions behave that way around me too when I'm swimming with them. They swoop and they swirl while starring me down but they haven't snapped. I keep my caught fish in a little bag attached or on top of my float so that it's away from my body. I used to carry the bag attached close to my hip or my back but the shark risk is a real factor. I've decided to keep the bag away from my body

@@SecondSonWoodworks yeah I’d recommend it if you’re planning on fishing more. Spearfishing, it’s a bit tough and slow because of all the weight, but it’s doable. I usually take it out for harbor fishing or within the port, but you can take it inshore a bit, but just gotta be selective about your days

hey were you on the inner side of the break wall? I think it's a long walk to the area when it gets that deep, do you have to walk along the wall all the way in if you don't have the boat? thanks in advance man.

You’re only allowed to dive the outer side. This was a different breakwall though. But I usually just swim out hella far for the breakwall you’re referring too

impressive haul. I'm rusty myself and it's been months, but weather has been pretty harsh a lot of the times I've looked. Nice to see you keeping at it! Most spooked I've been in the water was being buzzed by a seal while sitting on the bottom on a medium vis day. Still not sure it was a seal actually, but it most likely was. Just the feeling of the water force wrecked my nerves for the rest of the day. Dive safe!

Nice job! I know it’s preference but I always leave the Sheepshead because they are the only ones that can help clear out the damn urchins eating all the kelp
