I moved to New Orleans in 95 and had to cross the Huey P Long (prior to being widened) every weekday for my GED. Omg it used to be TERRIFYING! 18 wheelers would fly past you and force you to almost drive over the edge to avoid getting hit. Easily the scariest road I've ever driven to this day. Great video! I learned a few things as well.

I am here to tell you the I-10 bridge at Baton Rouge crossing the MS River MOVES !! While helping a stranded lady by changing her flat, I felt just how MUCH that bridge flexes !!

Pretty much any bridge. They have to give a little bit or they would crumble. The bigger/longer the bridge, the more they move! I’ve gotten queasy sitting in traffic on the Huey P Long in New Orleans.

That horse Wilkinson Bridge has to be the most common design in the United States. We had two of those in New York City ;now we only have one ; The Outerbridge Crossing.
@504RoadTrips
@504RoadTrips 3 жыл бұрын
That was a standard design from the 1940s to the 1980s and thousands of bridges were built during that time period. Most of them still stand today.

2:44 You want to make sure your windows are rolled up when you cross this bridge. There are factories all around making toxic who-knows what and the air is highly carcinogenic. It's more like a miasma. You can literally smell it it the air and it's nothing like the fumes coming from the vehicles. 4:13 This one too.

Why the bridge is gray it was once orange
@504RoadTrips
@504RoadTrips 6 жыл бұрын
The bridge was never deliberately orange. A nearby factory produced some kind of pollutant that reacted with the paint on the bridge and caused it to change to the orange color. They've either recently repainted the bridge (most likely, since they seemed to be still in the process of doing that) or whatever the chemical was that caused it is no longer present.

A couple of years ago we took a friend to Whitney Plantation and crossed the Gramercy Bridge. We had no idea she was afraid of bridges until she fainted. Scared the crap out of my wife and I. She came around in a few minutes and explained that she had a problem with high bridges - wish I would have known that earlier! On the way back we went downriver to Algiers to take the ferry back across.

Yeah Huey was accidently shot by one of his guards because Huey was being interrupted by a man that needed something from him and Huey wouldn't give the guy a minute to help him and while the man approached Huey he got upset with the man and from the looks of things the man turned to hold Huey up and Huey's guards shot at the man openly and struck Huey in the process. The story is on Unsolved Mysteries but I'll be honest with you guys I think the guard that shot Huey had actually messed up on his trigger finger while putting the gun in his hand fireing the gun poorly. He said that the gun wasn't correct in his hand and he had to shoot it oddly because it wasn't correct shooting it directly in his hand so it ended up hitting Huey in the back like 4 times due to the mishandleing of the gun in the guards hand.

@@504RoadTrips The Old Vicksburg bridge is still standing and still in use by Kansas City Southern Railway. As you know, the roadway carrying US 80 was closed to public use and rerouted to the Interstate 20 bridge nearby.
