Don't know for sure since I (for obvious reasons) haven't seen the story of Exilium, but given that we're playing with a lot of the same characters, I imagine it'll certainly help understanding it. But if you only want the story, then I recommend you search for the 'GFL Cutscene Interpreter' or to watch the cutscenes on KZbin. Additionally, Ferrari has a lot of extra lore videos.

I havent caught up in gfl 1 lore past slow shock (did miss longitidual strain) since i took a break to focus on studies but i do know a lot of the lore including from reverse collapse codename bakery and neural cloud (I also read Ferrari's entire lore doc ;-;) . I would say that you don't need to know much from RCCB and NC as those plot lines arent super important to know here but some basic gfl 1 lore would help to understand any of the backstory of the commander and enemies brought up in exilium like paradeus for example. As Cyber said gfl cutscenes are compiled on youtube and ferrari has nice lore vids and an entire doc if you want to :D

Assuming you're fine with gacha games, you could go check out the first game right now if you can handle sinking some of your time. The gacha system in GFL1 doesn't really require grind, and there's no stamina system blocking you from ACTUALLY playing, making it pretty easy to start up at any point in time - especially since major events get reruns and are eventually added to a separate campaign list so you don't gotta worry about missing out on anything. (except maybe limited-time drops) Expect a LOT of waiting in the early game though - sending your teams to gather ammo and rations because you can't use your teams in missions if you don't have the resources, nor while they're out getting stuff for you. But once you hit midgame you'll be rolling in unit productions since it uses resources and not premium currency. It's also got REALLY forgiving rates! Especially since rates are adjusted for each unit via the resources you choose to dump into your production recipes - though do note that the pity system practically doesn't exist. _Sorry for the wall of text by the way, I'm just excited to share things I'm rarely able to talk about_ As for 'is it normal', yes it's pretty normal. The late game gets dark and difficult even with maxxed units. Early story is average, but the story in later chapters/major events can get really dark, which contrasts heavily with the amount of fan-service the game has in the skins and damaged-unit CGs. They're not all like that, but still. The dark+spicy combo is definitely not for everyone, but if you're into that stuff then by all means, welcome!

It's a community joke which I don't think was translated well into English. "No girls, only frontline" is the more well-known phrase, and it's a reference to how the GFL story is dark and more focused on war, politics, philosophy and ideals rather than a cute, happy slice of life with your waifus. All playable characters (besides yourself) are women.

I used to play Arknights a fair bunch since it had fun gameplay and the gacha was comparably quite a lot better, especially since you only need one copy to get like 99% of a characters performance and you could get pretty much everyone off of monthly subscription.
