I'm very fussy about this. To me these are essentials of a "special" or "collector's" edition : - it must be a hardback - sprayed or stenciled edges - embossed or carved (preferably foiled) naked hardback If it doesn't have that it's not worth it imo. It's even better if it has other cool stuff like a ribbon book mark, illustrations, extra contents, etc I could also add an original design, because ripping off the og with different colours is boring.

I don't mind the Folio Farseer. But I actually much prefer the 20th anniv editions (striking blue covers, silver gilded edges, individual slipcases and illustrations). My problem is that they keep releasing anniversary editions for the main trilogy and pretending the other books in the series don't exist 🙄 Can we please get a matching hardcover set for all?🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

The Name of the Wind one actually has some really nice art inside and an added appendix with a lot of lore. There are like 50 extra pages of content there and the naked hardcover looks pretty neat with the bronze lettering. The pages that are painted red look awesome and I am pretty sure the print is larger so it feels nicer to read so definitely earns the name special even if the dust cover is not to everyone's liking.

Yes!! I love my special edition of The Name of the wind (plus mine is signed so it‘s extra special 🙈). Gollcanz also has hardcover editions of the series that are beautiful, but I don‘t know if they‘re just an Europe thing

I love Folio Society, and I think they produced amazing high quality books. But I've seen the details on the Farseer trilogy Folio society edition, and everything about it is massively disappointing. Cover art is meh, the interior artworks (imo) aren't suitable for Hobb's prose. Definitely not worth $200. I, by far, prefer the mainstream illustrated editions so much more.

To add to what Petrik said (love you, Petrik!), Elle chose like one of the worst FS editions. Other FS editions are way better like Dune or A Song of Ice & Fire which I proudly own. Once you hold one in your hand, you'll know why it costs so much. The paper quality is leagues above other printers, the clothbound covers are way nicer compared to leatherbounds, and the way they use smythe sewn bindings so the spine never breaks is just awesome, which is a practice not a lot of binderies do anymore. These editions will last you a LIFETIME with care and TLC. But yeah, the Robin Hobb one was just meh, which was a universal opinion from the fans 😁

You have to look at the binding, acid-free paper, etc.....other editions may look nice, but will have a terrible spine and yellow pages after several years. Not to mention, many LE's/numbered/lettered hold value or in some cases increase in value substantially. Look at Suntup, Amaranthine, Lividian, etc.

I got the special edition of Name of the Wind for my wife for Christmas thinking it looked pretty and honestly I don’t know if she’ll ever read it because it’s so pretty and giant it intimidates her. I actually said if you want a paperback copy totally fine. I really think she’d like it but yeah that huge anniversary edition is intense.

As long as something like that Catch-22 50th anniversary edition doesn't charge more for just the stamp and a new introduction, I don't have a problem with that one. I briefly joined* The Folio Society and $200 for three books sounds about average for their prices. They make lovely editions that are probably going to last for years, but their stuff isn't for anyone on a budget. (Hence me fulfilling my commitment and noping out.) *No idea if they still do Columbia House like memberships anymore.

I agree with the Wheel of Time one! Especially since I haven't heard of any pretty artwork inside either. I must say, I'm trying to get the Folio Society Farseer editions. 😆 I have heard that the quality is insane. Like really thick paper and it's heavy and feels smooth. The artwork inside is also very nice. But I'm a Robin Hobb stan so maybe that's why I'm more forgiving. It is a lot of money, which is the reason why I've been going back and forth for a year now...

The Folio Society publishes some remarkably beautiful books. I recently purchased their new edition of Middlemarch and it is breathtaking. Their Tey and Christie books are easily the most beautiful editions of those books available, however, you are completely right about Farseer. I bought the illustrated edition and skipped Folio’s edition. I’m happy with that decision.

The Folio series isn't that bad, it ticks my boxes of being really good quality, fantastic art, and there's no 'ny times bestseller' or anything on the cover. Plus any Hobb books they publish later will most likely match. I'm picky about which books I'll get in special edition to begin with though, I'm not about to invest in one of a book I haven't read or re-read at least a couple times. I can't even tell you how many copies of Fortress in the Eye of Time by C.J. Cherryh I've been through between loaning it out, and re-reading. I have had to buy the e-book just to spare my last physical copy. That's the kind of book I'll look for a special edition of (and never let anyone touch it on pain of death).

I'm a huge, huge fan of Folio Society, but it's definitely true some editions of theirs are less worth than others. I have four so far, and one is a bit less amazing than the other three (I'm still glad I have it though), so your critique is entirely fair. And I agree those Mistborn leather-bounds do look like classic encyclopaedias!

I have the Folio edition Farseer Trilogy. I think the value comes from a variety of things. Covers and illustrations are one, but just the overall quality - the feel of the paper under your fingers, the fonts used in chapter intros, etc. It all adds up. Whether it adds up to $200+ is entirely subjective, of course. I'm collecting their Game of Thrones special editions and have to say the covers, the massive map, the illustrations - definitely surpass the Farseer editions.

I totally agree on the Farseer trilogy. I'd shell out for the illustrated editions that you highlighted any day over the Folio society versions. Here's a couple of others that I'd add: -The new edition of Song of Achilles. It was hyped everywhere a few months ago when I walked into the bookstore and I picked it up and...the cover is just black now. Okay. -The new Neil Gaiman editions. Okay, this one is just personal taste, but I'm not a fan of the minimalist watercolour look. I think it's a weird juxtaposition with the tone of the books.

Luna is the ray of sunshine I needed this morning :) What kills me about so many of these editions is that I can't see many people being excited about them enough to purchase, and the publishers might end up losing money, avoided if they had just put in a bit more effort. I will say that I do like the encyclopedia style editions, though! 🙈 The main issue is just that they look a little out of place on a shelf with other normal books, but if I could have a whole shelf of leather-bound books I would!

Haha I actually love that the 50th Anniversary edition of Catch-22 has that cover because, to me, that IS Catch-22's cover and there are no others. There's other extra content in the back too, including photos of Joseph Heller's notes and some other cool stuff. Despite wanting that cool extra content, I would've rejected the special edition for the plain one just because I love that blue cover so much even though it's my favorite book that's not a fantasy book. Totally agree on the Farseer books though. I got the illustrated editions and love them so much. I dream about a release of the Tawny Man Trilogy with the same style though.

My favorite special editions is The Princess Bride 30th Anniversary (2 intros by author: for 30th anniversary and the intro from 25th; color maps, leather-like cover with gold embossed title, author and scrollwork, parchment type paper, multiple full-page color illustrations, and extra story at the end. And it only cost me $18 on Amazon). Second place goes to Dune Deluxe (beautiful new cover, artwork on flip side of dust cover, quote on naked hardcover, gold foiled spine, illustrations on end pages, sprayed edges.) I considered Leviathan Wakes 10th Anniversary edition. I do like the cover, but not enough to pay $31. Also, the hot pink edges don't excite me. I kind of wish they had made the edges plain black or black with star fields/galaxies. And maybe include one of the prequel short stories. Folio society definitely has some quality books, but I don't always like the artwork and they are way too expensive for my budget.

I feel bad for admitting it, but I'm with you. Out of all the six Sanderson leatherbounds, the Mistborn trilogy are the least physical appealing to me... That redish-brown leather color with the black and gold accents just doesn't do it for me. Reminds me of old boring books. The spines aren't as eye-candy and eye-catching as the Elantris, Warbreaker and WoK ones for the same reason. Insides are amazing though!
