I think having an actual physical prop looks more real than pixel effects, and give actors something to properly react too! Looks amazing!

well yes, but it depends on. iam not that big of an cgi fan but i see the benefits. robocop is a good example. ed209 looks great as a model but with modern cgi, he would be better. for a simple reason. the model was shot by stop motion. and you see it awfully intense. on the other hand. robots like the ones from transformers simply cant be real probs. same goes for makeup. take terminator. arnolds face mask looked cool, but it you look closely, you see the flaws. data from TNG has the same thing. the mask makes the face bigger on the spot where it's place. in T3 arnolds face was ripped off so hard, that they had to use cgi. and although the cgi isnt top of the class it looks way better in terms of realism.

As Walt Disney said, to fool the audience, change the trick shot-to-shot. This is wonderful. I we see more of this sort of thing in movies.

The 4-arm mecha suit could possibly be originally from Shiro Masamunes Appleseed manga from 1985. Not sure if anyone came up with that idea before. If you want to see practical power armor and mecha, his manga are the place to look.

The fact that he said that is a bit hypocritical considering the process used to build this robot involves computer modeling. The same used for cgi like ILM might do. Nothing against this amazing art, but many "Pixels" were used to make this.

I, in fact, do understand the word, and I used it in the correct context. An artist who insults someone else's medium, when they were using that medium, would be considered a hypocrite. They probably had a few cg test models, and animations they made to make sure the end result would work, so my comment is valid and yours lacks credibility. Dude, I honestly don't give a shit. It isn't ok to say another medium is inferior to yours even if it is saturated. Everyone gives cg a bad rap because it isn't always used effectively, and these guys saying that in an interview when they are using that tech, is very childish if anything. I don't fucking care if you don't think it's hypocritical, but it is disrespectful to those who use cg as a medium. It's a cool robot, or puppet, or whatever, but their hard work doesn't entitle them to shit on other's.

He is right, in part even if I appreciate the digital special effects in the cinema (when they remain completely invisible), it is true that their impressive and considerable work brings another dimension which sticks more to reality during the action scenes .

I guess I'm just old school.I grew up when cellphones were this strange technology that only grown-ups had and I was booted out of the house to wander the neighborhood in hopes some of my friends were home if not tough shit go find something to do, dig a hole and play army men or something. It just makes me worried when I got to my school and see people staring down at their phones texting to the person next to them.

Matt Winston is awesome! I couldn't agree more, pixels have their place but pale in comparison to well crafted physical effects can achieve. I hope the spirit of creativity lives on. The engineering and artistry behind projects like this is inspiring.

I'm glad there are people like these guys trying to bring back practical effects in films! Nine times out of ten they look far superior to CGI. No matter how good CGI is, most of the time you can tell it's CGI, which breaks immersion soooooo bad. Aliens, for example, looks phenomenal, even today. Hopefully we'll see less sloppy CGI and more beautifully crafted practical effects in films in the near future. :)

This reminds me of the story of Ludo from Labyrinth which was also a costume. They actually made it to fit two people of similar height because the costume was so heavy. No one person could wear it for a full day of shooting, and that was the second design (the first was even heavier).

I'm really glad to see the the Stan Winston School is sharing this kind of ''old school'' technology. Film makers really need to get back to basics on more films that would benefit over this kind of craftsmanship. There is a place for C.G.I [Dinosaurs & other costly props] then there's hands on model work in miniatures, props, makeup effects [Dick Smith, Tom Savani]. Well done guys!

So add hydraulics and servos, link the puppet system.... replace the shell with proper armour.... heck even if it doesn't work just having a series of these in your base as part of psyops will make the enemy piss themselves

Alright then, how about some suggestions ;). Google glass can be used for: Citytrips: no more guides no more getting lost, since you are already delutionall about its regonition software it could in your universe also be used to facilitate boarding checks. Speaking of delution, from your own militairy example one could also see a use for in "overwatch controll" where soldiers could be given orders remotely.

Jeremy Smith i've seen short segments on things like the history channel of some 'enhancements' such as robotic legs. there's also 'smart bullets' out there, too, but the average grunt in the field isn't going to be getting this stuff any time soon. if ever. personally, were i to put my best science fiction hat on and make up some remotely practical predictions, it would be about body armour, personal drones with some kind of helmet interface. i mean, why involve yourself in a firefight when you can direct your drone to the guy behind the wall shooting at you, then drop a grenade.
