After my 2nd bout with cancer I wanted to get back in shape. I got my time down to 15 minute miles without a ruck. I got up to 25 pounds at that pace before tearing up my hip. The VA doctor is a retired Ranger and he told me no more rucking. It took me a year to heal. It’s time to start over. So here I go. Great video, Inspiring and fun. Semper Fi brother.

Omg I was in the infantry and I experienced pain I’ve never knew I’d have. My last 5 mile in AIT I had a heat cramp in my ass all the way down to my knee. I finished the run without falling out. The 20 mile March was fine. My 20 mile road March at Ft. Campbell was a different story. Bottom of both feet nothing but huge bleeding blisters and I lost 2 toe nails (didn’t notice the blood coming out of my leather boots) from my feet sweating. I missed my 3 hour mark by 8 seconds. Did the March again the next day. I finished in 2 hours and 40 minutes. It’s amazing what our body’s can take.

My lower back instantly tightened up from watching you do this march. I have been out of the Marine Corps for 12 years now and I remember hills (mountains) like this as if I did it yesterday. I was a radio guy that carried a SAW, my radio with all its accessories and my pack. Plus I was the 3rd man. Shit sucked. I enjoyed the video. I wish KZbin was around with your videos for training when I was in. Excellent information for preparing.

Awesome video. Wish I had some poles when I climbed Mount Toubkal last year. Very much recommended - it's the highest mountain in North Africa and doesn't require a lot of technique. Yeah, dont try and do a 20 miler your first time though lmao. Do daypack hiking with running shoes for a bit to see how you like it, then invest in boots, and then a proper backpack (external frame small packs are really nice for light weights, but try some at an outdoor fitter of all kinds)

@@3vpme2 dont go on real rough trails until you have boots though. Your ankles will appreciate it. Just find for instance a nice semipaved trail around a lake and/or park, and put some miles in with running shoes on. Or do a treadmill with a school backpack with some weight in it, or both.

SFAS 1989 (fail) and was selected SFAS 1992 (dropped from Q). 1989 the Sand Man kicked my ass. The day before team events I had such bad blisters the Camp Medic had to do a biopsy punch on my foot. I was using polypropylene underneath wool socks with mole skin as needed. I think the layering of socks might have kicked my ass. AT Q, I bulged L4 and ruptured L5 which spiked into the left sciatic nerve (worst pain ever). I didn't spend enough time conditioning my corp. I ended back in Germany (7th SOSC) as my original MOS, Chaplain Assistant. Taking care of you fine men 😁

I should add. I was stationed at Ft. Carson and trained in the mountains. The wife would drop me off West of Manitou Springs and I would navigate back with map and compass. One time I Fu*&cked up while boxing my bearing and ended up in Cheyenne Canyon (NORAD territory). I ended up getting a polite escort after an ID check and told to stay out of their back yard, lol.

What is the logic behind the US military teaching high weight position as I'm unsure who to listen to now

Mini bear spray or a higher pressure 91% or more alcohol spray bottle are my favorite anyi rattle snake methods. Bear spray wears off faster then regular pepper spray and has more range. Rattle snakes have a far biting distance. They’ll move on their own.

Poles are a winner when you can use them....fall over going downhill carrying 80lbs hurts. Wear long, loose sleeves and a boonie....protect ears and neck...ears will be like crispy bacon if you keep frying em. Use micropore/zinc oxide tape on feet to stop blisters....and if getting hotspot...stop and tape it...or if can't stop pour cold water into boot....lubricates and cools until you can deal with it properly. Steep hills are quicker than the tempting long but less steep drags. Quicker you go the less time you'll suffer....don't stop moving but do stop messing with your straps...it won't help with the pain which will come and go anyway. Take the steep route and just think of that person you really should have punched...get angry...it'll distract you from the pain, give you energy and you'll be up in no tme...lol.

just got out of a wheelchair I had ankle surgery for a high ankle tear and couldn't walk for three months. been slowly adding weight to my pack and length to my walks. just slowly building back up to pre surgery. its fucking brutal one mile with 20 lbs feels like 20 miles used to. its crazy how you can lose literally all your calf and thigh muscles in such a short period of time of not walking. also all your callous goes away, my feet are once again smooth as a baby's bottom after shedding like snakeskin in the wheelchair. in less than a month ive gone from being able to walk half a mile with no weight to couple mile walks with 20 lbs. trying to take it slow but the urge to go on a 10 miler prevails lol. also one thing you don't anticipate is how much weight you can gain in a wheelchair quickly like goddamn unless you starve yourself you're putting on lbs cause you cant do anything in the chair on painmeds.

@@FNGACADEMY oh yeah, i didnt have plans to go out with an 85lb ruck and tackle some hills. I was just wondering if there are tricks of the trade youve found or been taught to avoid destroying your knees or falling on steeper downhills and uphills.

@@FNGACADEMY fair enough lmao. I thought of the question because of an rotc ruck where we had to take some 180lb stretchers with us. Going up and down the parking garage ramps carrying them was sketchy. Inspired me to ask when i saw your vid.

Greetings from Greece🇬🇷! Wouldn't a stiffer boot be more suitable for the climb? That Nike boots look to soft soled. Stay strong! 💪

Stiffer boots take more stress off the calves, and support the ankle better. But they reduce ankle mobility and often weigh more (the stiffness has to come from something).

@@thesocialistsarecoming8565 Yes indeed. My stiff backpacking boots are way heavier than my Salomon quest 4ds. But for a hill or mountain climb with a rucksack I prefer them over the Salomons.

@@jimmyzulu85 yep, imo stiffer, heavier boots are better for rougher terrain or foliage. Keeps you from rolling your ankle and helps you step down plants. The weight of them slows you down a bit, but if you're going through tough terrain or foliage, you're not hitting topspeed anyways.
