Yes it is. They have a new weapon in their armoury these days, which is that adaptation is real but evolution isn't. What they don't have is an explanation of how animals "adapt" if it isn't at the genetic level. Do they just _decide_ to grow tails or wings? And, of course, once forced to accept how silly that idea is, they claim adaptation is also at the gene level. In which case, I argue, it's evolution. Their tactic is then usually to tell me I'll find out the truth on Judgment Day.
@andystokes870211 ай бұрын
@@joshuakohlmann9731 That seems like a ridiculous argument they make. Surely evolution and adaptation are exactly the same thing. I can see evolution in quite a lot of places. For example, christianity has evolved from judawordinsertedism. It probably started as a small group with some master leader. Once the master leader died, the disciples took over and became leaders and at some point, they disagreed with each other and split into separate groups and they split some more over time and now, there are 47,000 sects. In fact, the bible itself gives as indication that right from the beginning, there were arguments among them and they had split. Look at Paul's letters. Look at Revelation. All religions split. The more time passes, the more stress there is inside a group, the more split happens. Mormonism is pretty (~1830) new and it has at least 4 sects. Scientology (~1940) has at least 2 sects.

I understand that the debaters in this video are caricatures of common misinterpretations, so pointing out what’s wrong with their rhetoric is *literally the point of the video*, but man it annoys me to no extent when people who don’t understand the theory of evolution say that if there’s some missing link between humans and apes that it would prove evolution. Like there are in fact transitional fossils between, for instance, species of whale ancestors. That alone would prove evolution as a possibility if they were actually in the pursuit of knowledge instead of in the pursuit of justifying their own insecurities.
@louistournas1203 жыл бұрын
@@coltonbates629For some animals, like cats and snakes, there haven't been much fossil finds. However, there are fossils. I have seen a few snake fossils, I think it was from 140 million y ago. They had hind legs. We can’t expect the fossil record to be perfect. As for humans, there are enough fossils to tell the story. Biological evolution is pretty much a certainty even though in science, we never declare to be 100% certain of anything. Of course, you can explain such things, give links and so on to the creationist but don’t expect them to change their minds right away. They view the conversation as a debate. They want to see one thing radically change into something else in front of them.

As a kid I was surrounded by Christians who would heap praise on me when I did Christian-ish things. My mother, all her friends, everyone I knew who ever said or did anything nice for me did it because I ticked the right boxes. Bible study. Speaking in tongues. Trying to convert the kids at school. And... being a damn-near militant young-Earth creationist. Using all these talking points. Making a complete ass of myself at every opportunity. High school assignments on Evolution in biology class were almost a copy-paste of this video, but with a bunch of totally unrelated stuff (equally incorrect) about geology, cosmology, physics... I heard evolution and I heard "you must defend every piece of tripe you've been told to believe". And I thought I was winning. I thought my bogus factoids were gotchas, because all the other Christians told me they were gotchas. The DARWINISTS cant POSSIBLY respond to this!. In reality, I was leaving everyone speechless because there was simply no rationality in my argument, so there could be no counter-argument. I might as well have suggested that the sky was made of peanut butter. And when I did this stuff... I was rewarded. I was held up as some kind of moral exemplar by the increasingly irrelevant religious nutters I was surrounded by. And when a kid is only rewarded for being stupid, he will learn to be stupid habitually. I became a high-school dropout and did nothing useful with my life for a decade. Now, somehow, I have broken free from religion and superstition, and I went back to finish high school, and then to university. I am a physicist now. I am a naturalist, the exact opposite of what they raised me to be - but although I escaped it in the end, I can confidently say my entire life was set back at least 10 years. And not just set back - wasted in the most shameful, disgusting way possible. It was taken away from me, and I was turned into an unthinking little weasel. I was trained not to use my brain. Creationists (the "teaching" kind, not necessarily their followers) are deliberately misleading, manipulative and ignorant and make shitloads of money from that. Unfortunately there are people who take the opposite road. Those who were not raised with creationism but decided to start believing in it in later life and then build this big confirmation bias and quote mining pool around them, are just as tedious to discuss as their leaders themselves. They roboticly repeat the same stupid talking points over and over again.
@sammypuro939211 жыл бұрын
haiggoh Right, exactly. It's like you're talking to robots, continually spouting the debunked ideas they hear from their apologists. I personally believe that the main issue lies with the fact that many believers view scientists and critical thinkers as 'corrupted'. They believe we have been 'indoctrinated' by the 'wicked' ways of the world. They naturally then adopt a thought process which encourages them to be wary of scientific facts which clearly conflict with their world view. I, when identifying myself as a believer in the past, believed that atheists had hearts that had been hardened and could not 'understand the things of god'. It takes a lot of de-traumatisation to recover from those thought patterns. I believe however, if I of all people got to this stage, most people could too.
@haiggoh11 жыл бұрын
Sammy Puro which is of course ironic, because they are the ones who have actually been indoctrinated to believe everyone else is indoctrinated and they somehow are in possession of the one and only truth. How did you recover from those thought-patterns after all? After speaking to some creationists it seems like it's impossible to escape. They just outright dismissed every evidence I presented to them an would say stuff like "DNA proves creationism" without further elaborating why it would when I had just demonstrated it actually proves common descend. You know these type of arguments. What made you change your mind eventually? Was it the sum of people disagreeing with you over time or was is one specific argument presented to you at the right time in your life?
@sammypuro939211 жыл бұрын
haiggoh Yes, well there was a culmination of ideas that got me initially thinking about the doctrine I believed. The main step in de-converting a fundamentalist (creationist) is to get them to understand that Yahweh - God of the bible is an invention. This is not an opinion. Not an interpretation by a few people. This is *fact*. Archaeological evidence clearly demonstrates the polytheistic nature of the earliest Jews. Yahweh was just ONE among many other Gods that the Jews worshiped. Bible scholars and well informed honest christians acknowledge this. -----> www.huffingtonpost.com/valerie-tarico/polytheism-and-human-sacr_b_777340.html What saddens me is that most christians will never get the opportunity to see these facts right there in their face. What are the other laws of thermodynamics? Do you even know what they're called? How about the details on the second? In my experience only 1 creationist had the slightest idea what the second law of thermodynamics even states, and even he tried then to argue that the Earth was a closed system, something that's demonstrably false.
@blanktester10 жыл бұрын
I was kidding. The creationist in the video says that line exactly. I am not a creationist.

I once discussed a creationist who was absolutely convinced of the idea that evolution breaks the second law of thermodynamics over more than 50 comments in the same thread. It went on for days it was like talking to a wall. What they fail to see is that creation pretty much breaks the first. Well any everything else we know in physics and chemistry. Doesn't seem to bother them.
@WilliamSnellIAM10 жыл бұрын
haiggoh Ask them what the second law actually states, and how it relates to the other laws. Ask them what the other laws are. Really all you need is a basic familiarity with them to understand how stupid using the second law of thermodynamics to argue a creationist case is. Not one creationist I've asked could even list the other laws without time to go research them, which was bad enough, but they didn't even know what the second law said. Mostly they're just parroting what they read on the AiG website.

Not only is this some of the actual conversations that I've had with creationists - but I've had even worse ones.
@vmelkon10 жыл бұрын
sclinge1 I have been in a situation where the guy claimed that he isn't part of any religion and he just simply believes in a god and the reason he contact me was to prove to him that a god doesn't exist. He wouldn't even define his god. After long messages back and forth, it became clear he was a creationist. I had also destroyed his arguments and his final response was an idiotic 2 sentences. Creationists are the new gays in the closet. Gays are out and creationists are in the closet.
@sclinge110 жыл бұрын
Vrej Egon Spengler "the guy claimed that he isn't part of any religion and he just simply believes in a god" What he said with just this part here, is that he's a Deist. I know this because I'm actually a type of Deist. I believe there is some sort of supreme being or even a group of beings (an alien race?) that initiated the Big Bang billions of years ago, and then left everything alone after that. No more involvement, no book, no worship, no heaven or hell... just that *that* was the cause of the start of the beginning of the universe. Nothing more. And I fully understand it can't be proven nor disproven right now, so I could very well be 100% wrong - and I'm perfectly fine with that. It's why I say it's my *belief*.
@vmelkon10 жыл бұрын
sclinge1 I have considered that concept and I would not call that deism. People who say god, aren't even sure what it is or how to define it. Some of them say that it is omnipotent and omniscient which doesn't make sense. They use words like spiritual and soul which also has no proper definition. They are into worshipping which is another word for ass kissing. If someone says alien, I imagine that they are talking about life forms more or less like us and made of matter, not pixie dust.
@sclinge110 жыл бұрын
Vrej Egon Spengler "I would not call that deism" I do for lack of better words. If someone would invent a specific word for it - there I would be. "If someone says alien, I imagine that they are talking about life forms more or less like us and made of matter" That may not necessarily be the case. They or it could be comprise of pure energy. I don't know. Until we do know, I figure and feel (not "know") that it's the best scenario. And it matters very little to me any way.

@louistournas1209 жыл бұрын
+asif raheem "There are muslims that think earlier humans were very tall and lived for hundreds of years. Make a video about that." ==I'm sure there are. This belief appears in judaism and christianity and also in the greek religion (They believed that giants lived on top of mount Olympus). Even to this day, people believe in certain stupidities like breaking a mirror brings bad luck, don't open an umbrella in the house, don't leave scissors open, don't walk over someone if he is lying on the ground or else he won't grow tall. (I've heard some of these from my mother. My colleagues were talking about it at work and we don't even come from the same culture). They are like rumors. Someone started them a long time ago and they were just repeated over and over. The silliness turns into a belief and then gets integrated into religious books. I don't like the term 'transitional fossil.' It implies that evolution is a process with multiple stopping points rather than a continuous process that branches off at times when populations stop sharing genetic information. All species are transitional in that sense, right?
@victoneter11 жыл бұрын
I agree. Unless we find the remains of every single organism that has ever lived there are bound to always be "gaps".
@sinisamarovic11 жыл бұрын
Well, if you take into account that evolution "speeds up" in case of drastic environment change, there are species that "stick around" a bit longer then others, so they might in a way be considered "cornerstones", while those that vanish faster might be considered "transitional". At least that's the way I look at it.
@maryrogers631611 жыл бұрын
What is truly baffling is their attitudes towards the fact that it can clearly be seen that there are transitional forms between ancient "apes" and modern humans. I grew up with the falsehood that early hominid skulls were just ape skulls or were deformed human skulls. How do they explain the fact that if you have a skull with a larger, more complex brain than apes that it can't be a modern ape? How do they explain the gradual progression of larger brain sizes and that many hominid species had brains as big as ours. but with different skill sets? We now have the technology to be able to actually get an idea of what their brains were like by making an inner cast of the brain case. It actually can tell you about the structure of the brain, not just the size. Many of our ancient hominid ancesters were SMARTER than we are in certain areas and actually were successful species for a long period of time. We are actually the new kids on the block. Of course to creationists all this information is just "Blah, blah, blah.."
@amihartz10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've thought the same thing. Pretty much every fossil is a transitional form. I'm a transitional form. One of the reasons I don't like this word is because if we find a fossil and say it's a transitional form, a creationist can just point out that we now have two more gaps to fill.

@ishtarian10 жыл бұрын
***** Have to agree with the others -- he's spot on here when it comes to creationist arguments. They've been repeating the same bloody things over and over ever since I was a kid, and that was more than half a century ago. My brother is a minister, and signed me up for the Creation Science Newsletter when I was in my early teens, and even then I found their "arguments" the flimsiest things I'd ever seen... and they've not got one whit better, nor even in most cases much altered the wording. I don' know whether to laugh or cry at videos like this. If the basis of humor is pointing out the profundity of human stupidity and thick-headedness, then this has got to be one of the most hilarious things ever done. Unfortunately, as I live in a society (America) where such a large percentage of the population actually believes precisely the sorts of arguments put forth here, all too often such things strike me more as tragic than funny.....

Atheist populations are on decline. There is no morality to live by since there is no scientific physical evidence for it according to atheists. Thus their societies aren't held together as well as Christian societies which value life, hard work and reproduction more. The U.S. still reigns supreme in total GDP and has high GDP per capita especially when you consider the population size while Europe slowly fades. Atheists will claim a country such as Norway as atheist country despite the countries foundations and history built on Christianity and the majority of the population still identifying itself as Christian. It is interesting watching atheist societies falling far below Christian societies in terms of music, art, business, law and even science.

"Not a single fossil of a transitional species?" The stupidity here goes beyond ignorance of research. Just use some basic logic. EVERY fossilized animal is a transition between something older and something newer. The exception is if a species was somehow exterminated at the stage where at least one of the corpses happened to be fossilized. In that case, the fossilized species might not have any descendants. My point is that the "missing link" argument is a completely moot point. Filling in one large gap always creates two smaller gaps, which gives idiotic apologists the lamest renewable excuse to continue bashing evolution.

I think something like that did happen, but a couple times. Archaeoraptor was a fake fossil made by Chinese farmers (IIRC) who "glued" two different fossils together. It fooled some people at National Geographic who published an article on it. But NatGeo is a pop-sci magazine, not a peer-reviewed scientific journal: Archaeoraptor was determined to be a fraud before making it into those. There are forgeries and frauds in every area that humans participate in, because, well, it involves humans. What matters is that the number of transitional fossils is overwhelming, and fakes do not eliminate them. PS: There are frauds in every religion too. Do you know how many different people have claimed to have found Noah's Ark? Critical scholars have determined that 3 (or more) of the epistles in the New Testament that are attributed to Paul are forgeries.

I wish we lived in a world where this was absurd parody people could point and laugh at, instead of "Oh man, I remember one of the millions of debates that went EXACTLY like this!"

It's hard to win an arguement against a smart person It's damn near impossible to win an arguement against an idiot

Pure gold I laughed so hard, I fell like I just watched every debate on evolution wrapped up in one. There was an interview between Dawkins and an ignorant blond woman that drove me bonkers, I think a lot of this came from that interview. Very funny stuff, Wish I could like this vid a thousand times.
