What's up everyone?! In this video I wanted to give you guys a heads up on sleep deprivation and caution everyone to know their triggers to avoid making mistakes while sleep deprived.
You guys may ask yourself why I always have a positive outlook on things that are going on. Trust me these things bother me. However, I spent most of my childhood angry and resentful, I hated my life. I am not going to continue that as an adult, we are all in charge of our destinies and being positive has changed my outlook drastically.
Never forget how blessed we are as a country. History shows that those who take their positions for granted are soon humbled.

I met a 5th group guy in 2002. He and his team, along with another team were in a 30-plus hour fight complete with RPG’s and mortars falling near their position. The lesson he gave to me was teamwork was essential in everything they did. If his buddy said “I need to take a few minutes,” he would step up and fight a little harder. It was humbling being around such great men.

I’m a firefighter and picked sleep deprivation for a career. It physically hurts, it sucks and it affects your family ,friends, kids everything. Most people’s mood when they get tired is angry, angrier and angriest. The thing I’ve learned is just suck it up and don’t complain. Your body will adapt but it will be come at a price. You will be shocked how long you can stay up and still function. My coping mechanisms are take naps if you can, find a hobby you like that can change your mood and do it when when your tired. For those guys with families don’t go home if you’re tired and grumpy. Stop at a coffee shop and chill, go surfing, take a hike in the woods. Better to be a happy father/husband and see your family a little less than have more time with your family and be an asshole. I know this won’t apply to all the SOF candidates but it’s my 2 cents which is worth nothing.

I am glad that you made this video because this was really my only fear. Sleep deprivation, not eating for a long time (10-15 hours while doing intense physical activity), and being wet 24/7. Those are the three aspects that can and will absolutely piss you the hell off. It is very difficult for me to keep my emotions in check. I am conscious about my feelings, but it almost feels instinctual to be pissed off, which leads to taking it out on someone else. I don't want to do that. I think, like many things, I just have to keep putting myself into those situations so that I get used to it.

They do it intentionally in SFAS. They will smoke you all day into the night then put you in a dark or dimly lit class room and give you an MMPI Pych evaluation followed by interview. It's a very common tactic to break down resistance to interrogation. I have applied to NYPD and various other agencies after military service they all do some version of it.

Working in the film industry people have to face sleep deprivation regularly (12 to 24 hours of activity)Most of the military issues are similar to those that you encounter on set. SFAS generally has a packing list they do a layout inspection day one. The quickest way to get sent packing is not have something your supposed to or have something your not supposed to. The Ruck that all that packing list is packed into is the most obvious so you want to have exactly what the list tells you. The Army adopted newer rucks over the course of the war. Most of them sick. The standard Alice Ruck has been arround a long time because it works. Keep in mind the Army has about 497,000 people only about 50,000 are Infantry and only 5000 are Special Forces and that means what Big Army uses may not be good for everyone, so SF may still be using the Alice Ruck. Alice Rucks have been modified and customizes for years by companies like Tactical Tailor those they might let you use but make sure before you ever show up.

Rangers is primarily door kicking and direct action. SF is a little bit of everything. Depending on how old you are, you may also want to consider how long you're willing to spend in training. SF can take nearly 3 years to fully train an SF soldier and they average in late 20s in age, if I'm not mistaken. Ranger is only 10 weeks total (RASP and Airborne) after OSUT, so most of them are early 20s. Just keep in mind that the 75th is no joke. Slack off at all and they will not hesitate to RFS you. You have to remain in top physical shape and their standards are extremely high.

Do you know of any studies on sleep dep? Would you suggest like 3min micro-naps or any other techniques?

Sleep deprivation is very much a "individual experiences may vary" type of thing. If I'm up for a long time and need to sleep, any type of micro nap will crush me. I have to run it straight and deal with the migraines as they come. Other people seem to have good luck with them from what I've seen.

If I could get in, I think I'll be alright. I naturally function on 3 hours of sleep or less. Might be different after getting smoked around the hour every day.

It’s not intense. I was infantry in the Marines. In the field you’ll get 3-4 hours but in garrison it depends on you. Most of the time we were on stand by playing call of duty or fighting each other

@@toasterpastries5811 yeah some days it is less depending on guard duties or if the DS wakes everyone up for a smoke session.

Depends. In Infantry basic it's never enough but probably way more than something like SFAS and QCourse. Ranger School is something everyone who has been there will bring up as being the worst. It's a regular Army School run by Training and Doctrine Command its not USSOCOM . Everyone thinks BUDS is bad with Hell Week thats a week with little to no sleep and a constant physical activity. Ranger School is 65 days like 9 week with an average of 3hrs sleep a day if that and heavily restricted food intake as well less than an MRE a day. In BUDS you get plenty of calories during hell week. Also unlike BUDS you aren't doing simple PT during Ranger School you are executing and having to take turns planning and executing complex Infantry Missions and learning new Terrain such as Mountains and Swamps.

I have made a conscious decision to avoid watching, reading, or listening to any of the Afghanistan coverage, the anger, frustration, sorrow, and feelings of helplessness that it causes is a good way to feel bad and act stupid. I know enough about the situation to understand whats going on, I don't need to confirm it.

NTC: Pay attention to those to your left and right as you go through the N.T.C. cycle. You will notice changes in attitude and see another side of personalities. Take note that you unintentionally do the same. As I take note of how the situation will progressively get worse I "embrace the suck" in my own way, I laugh things off as a way to deal with unfortunate events. Find your own way of minimizing frustration, because trust me once you reach multiple days in a row of unfortunate events and interrupted poor sleep you will wish you embraced every bad situation. Learn your weaknesses and incorporate solutions. Adapt.

Hey Buck I have a question, do you think learning Russian can be of use in a military career? I am interested in literature as a hobby. Also I am concidering learning a foreign language, I started learning Russian a couple of weeks ago and it has been going great. My reason for picking Russian is because of my love for Russian literature and because I have an entire family including 3 brothers who I have never spoken to because they only speak Russian, Turkish and a little Arabic. Thanks in advance, keep it up love your vids man!!!

Yes I passed, one of 19 from a class of 130. I was young, dumb and proud
