Using the animal rawhide as a sieve or funnel would be a great way to separate clay from sand. Make the same setup as you would for cleaning drinking water, using the hide as a tube with one end larger than the other. Put charcoal in the funnel first, then follow that with pebbles then dry grasses. Make a pile of these supplies and know they can be used later. Put a handful of loose dirt with the clay on top of the pile in the funnel. Pour water on the dirt and catch the flow from the other end with more hide. You can make the hide into a bucket shape by soaking it, setting it on dirt and putting a rock inside. Then, tie the sides up to the edge of the rock. The size of the bucket will be determined by the largest piece of hides ability to go up around the rock. To help it retain its shape you can cut some holes around the top edge and weave cordage through and around. Tie it with extra cordage like a hoodie. Enjoy! The clay will be like butter for your crafts.

Brain tanning is more of a soaking process. You render the brain in water. Soaking the hide separately. 24 hours of soaking the hide you flesh it by scraping the membrane off the hide then soak it again. Make a rack to stretch the hide. After the hide has soaked another 24 hours place it in the solution. If you can find an egg, use the yoke in the solution. Soak the hide for at least 24 hours In the solution. Remove the hide and rinse it then twist it to remove as much water as you can. Stitch in the rack tightly and allow it dry. Once it's dry work on a branch to soften it. When it's soft hang it over a smokey fire until it develop's the "tan" color. At this point you have a tanned hide that should last years . Thanks for the video. Really great content.

New to your videos, so not sure if this message will reach you. I’m anishinaabe (aka Ojibwe… Bad River Band). I was watching the part where you were attempting to brain tan the rabbit hide. I have taught classes on how to do this. So when I saw the caption that it was your first attempt and asked for suggestions, I decided to write this. For starters, each animal has enough brains to tan its own hide (except the buffalo). When you do this, it’s important to prepare the hide first. You have to make sure there’s no flesh left on it, carefully scraping it off. You also need to clean it with water (soak it, wring it out, soak it some more) after you get all the meat, etc. off of it. Once it’s clean, you make a slurry of the brains and warm water, which you then rub into the hide. Let it set for a while, and then repeat, until the hide is soft and pliable. Give it a final rinse. After that, to better preserve it (especially hides with the fur removed), hang it above a smoky fire, made from “punky” wood… old, rotted wood that smokes. And there ya go: brain tanning 101. I do mostly deer/moose hides, but this method works on all the critters. P.S. I appreciate that you give thanks to the animal whose life was given so yours could continue. Maybe bring a small pouch of semaa (tobacco) to put down as you say your prayer, giving thanks; a gift for a gift. baamaapii!! 💜👍🏼

Wherever you make a clay vessel, or anything else, take a super smooth river rock and act like you are polishing the clay when it is at a firm stage , but not dry. You don’t have to press hard, just polish the clay. This will force the grog, or coarse stuff, to be pushed from the surface and the fine clay to surface. You can get things incredibly smooth doing this, with much less work than polishing the clay when dry. You also get a better look. (I know I keep giving advise on the clay, but I spent many years working with clay. You are doing a great job with the clay.
@molliejonte27323 жыл бұрын
Polishing the clay is what has been done with clay dating back a very long time. You want to find a rock that is super smooth in at least a portion of it.

A smooth bone would also make a good polishing tool. Especially a small bone for hard to get to places.
