Ah, Martin in the morning! A perfect way to start the day. May I suggest that for your next Firestarter adventure that you take an empty toilet paper roll and fill it full of dryer lint (not too tightly packed) and then wrap it in a piece of wax paper and twist the ends, looking somewhat like a big tootsie roll. Light the twisted ends and voila an effective and inexpensive fire starter. Pack a few in and try it on your next trip. I was skeptical when I heard about them, but I used them to start our backyard fire pit and they really work!

Also, inexpensive liquid fuel cigarette lighters, available at any gas station or store in the country/woods, will start your fire better than old, maybe damp, maybe the striker surface doesn’t light the match, you get the idea. We carry these instead of matches for winter hiking and ski trips, for emergency fires. Have three in different pockets.

We just have Black Bears. I have never had any trouble with one out in the woods but did shoot one that would not leave the cabin yard even after shots fired to chase it off.

Not about that at all. The cabin is enjoyed by so many that my goal is to make it like they are there with me.
