Joseph Smith, quoting John the Revelator, indicated this gift is so important that( every “man who has the testimony of Jesus,” is a prophet, “)(for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. -Revelation 29:l0th )verse” (TPJS, p. 119) In ancient times it was thought that only a few people could be prophets. In fact, they often declared that they wanted only a certain person to be a prophet for all the people. Joseph Smith said this was a wrong concept and declared: . . . the people should (each one stand for himself, )(and depend on no man or men)( in that state of corruption) of the Jewish church-that (righteous persons could only deliver their own souls)(-applied it to the present state of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints-)said if the people departed from the Lord, (they must fall-that they were depending on the Prophet)(, hence were darkened in their minds, in consequence of neglecting the duties devolving upon themselves), . . . Would God that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them! (Num. 11:25-29)
