There was a time when a lot of top players would play in their countries, top talent was also more spread out, more competition in Europe, club fan culture was so varied and unique (not talking about violence, that needed to go). Brazilian and Argentine clubs had legendary players. Most of the world's top players play in the same money laden teams today, those clubs that basically wanted to break off and form their own "super league." Even around this time period 2009/10/11, it felt like that's were it was heading. At least I got to see Messi play.

But it could also be that football has changed. The decline of its excitement for me roughly matches the beginning of mainstream social media usage.
