This is why, with the help of one of our special educators… we have put together this three-part series titled; Tips for teaching your kids at home!
This is the second video in that series where we dive a little deeper into the academics portion of homeschooling…

If you haven't yet watched part one of teaching your kids at home… you should! That video primarily discusses the groundwork needed for preparing to teach at home.

Today, we will dive more into the fundamentals of teaching and tips on how to best work with your child…
5 Tips For Teaching Your Kids At Home (Part 2)
1. Get on Your Child's Level
2. Make A Hard Homework Sandwich
3. Get Other Parents Involved
4. Utilize Your Older Children
5. Special Math Strategy; Use Household Items
Tip #1: Get on your child's level
AKA; Learn Where You Are Method
1. As parents of children with special needs we often
a. Do what we can, When you can, and however you can.
2. Example; Your child is "hangry!"
a. You are okay with them eating macaroni and cheese for the 8th night
b. Even on the floor if that's what it takes…
3. Do the same for schooling
a. If your child wants to read while in the tub, do it!
4. Many teachers have moved toward the "Learn Where You Are Method."
a. Children learn best when they're most comfortable.
b. In school this could be;
i. Standing at a desk in lieu of sitting down
ii. Pacing back and forth
iii. Sitting on the floor
-Is it a struggle to get your child to do math or history work, and every single night it's screaming and crying, and everyone walks away from homework time mad and frustrated with each other because the work is just that hard? Well, this next tip will hopefully save you that frustration and time.
Tip #2: Make a hard homework sandwich
1. Strategy Helps Avoid Homework (or classwork) Burnout
2. How it works;
a. First, Easier Work
b. Second, More Challenging Work
c. Finally, Easier Work To End The Day
3. Simple, but VERY effective to ensure the workday ends on a high note.
4. Expert Tip; Take breaks! Even five-minute brain breaks help tremendously
Tip #3: Get other parents involved
1. Fact; You are better at some things than others
2. Teachers are the same
a. This is the reason older children transition to different teachers during the day.
3. Work with your child utilizing your strengths
4. Locate parents whose strengths are your challenges.
5. Create a "Co-Op" where you teach each other's children in the subject you're strongest in.
6. Homeschool parents have been doing this for years… it's VERY effective!
Tip #4: Utilize your older children
1. As a parent forced into homeschooling, you most likely still have to work
2. Older children can help
a. If capable of independence
b. Have Younger Children Sit With Them During School Time
c. Younger Children Can Read Books To Older Children
3. Incentivize Older Children Through A Reward Chart
a. More screen time
b. Video Game credits
c. Physical prizes
Tip #5: Use household items as examples in math
1. Children struggling with math?
2. Get Creative With Items Around The House
a. Legos, Hot Wheels, dolls, fruit, skittles, etc.;
3. Work for basic math skills
a. Adding
b. Subtracting
c. Multiplying
d. Dividing
e. Even Fractions!
This list is most definitely not exhausted… this is only the second video of a three-part series.
In the meantime, remember to be flexible and also to go easy on yourself as you don't have to be perfect to teach your children.
