Your kids are home, and they either came with stacks of books and laptops from their school… or just a packet of worksheets…

Either way, they most likely have a billion questions on what is happening and when they get to go back to school primarily to see their friends.
You have been given more responsibility… Not only do you have to be a parent to your child, but also… you get to be the teacher, janitor, playground monitor, and cafeteria supervisor…
Plus, you have to figure out HOW to do your own work at the same time.
So, how can you get all of this accomplished and make sure your kids actually learn something while they are off of school????
If you keep watching, I am going to provide some tips and tricks to help you teach your children while they are home.
This is the first of a 3 part series put together by one of our special education experts- Teaching Your kids At home.
Welcome to this episode of Special Education Parenting Tips;
The first thing I want you to do is…Take a Deep breath, hold it for 10 seconds, and then breathe it out slowly.
Now, grab a pen and paper and get ready to jot down some notes.
Realize you are not alone in this new endeavor.
Don’t beat yourself up if things go rough from time to time.
School teachers have rough teaching days too.
Now let’s dive into those tips!
Today, we will cover 5 tips for teaching your kids at home;
1. Make a schedule
2. Make a “School” chart
3. Utilize Online Resources
4. Let Loose!
5. Choose a Specific Location For School Work
Tip #1: Make a Schedule
1. Start With Correct Supplies
a. Poster Board, Whiteboard, Paper
b. Proper Writing Utensil
2. Create schedule WITH family involvement
a. Include Everything From Breakfast To Bedtime
-Bottom line, Remember to be flexible with your schedule and with your time.
Tip #2: Make a “School” chart
1. Start with a piece of paper for each child
2. Next, Write down The following;
a. Subjects Your Child Is Working On
b. Days of the week
3. Use Stickers Once Something Is Completed
4. Once Filled, Reward Them For Their School Work by ordering a prize on amazon, or something you already have around your house…
5. Be Creative and Customize The Chart WITH Your Child
Tip #3: Utilize Online Resources
-Does your son’s math confuse you, or perhaps your daughter’s science homework is to learn about mammals you’ve never heard of? Well, there’s a world of knowledge online that can help you with both.
1. Know What Resources Are Available; Commonly used examples include;
a. IXL.com
b. Education.com
c. National Geographic Kids
d. Reading A to Z
e. Of course, our site; SpecialEdResource.com
2. Most of these Sites Are Interactive
a. There are Learning Games Available
i. These games Change Based On Grade Level
3. Many Are Available At No Cost At The Time I’m Filming This Video
a. Due To COVID-19
Tip #4: is simply to Let Loose!
1. Be silly and goofy with your kids - SERIOUSLY
a. This actually helps hold their attention during learning time
b. Younger Children THRIVE off of fun learning
i. Do things like Sing an Alphabet Songs, or Do Funny Dances
c. Even Older children enjoy goofing off from time to time!
2. If Your child’s attention Begins To Slip;
a. Refocus them with impromptu gym classes (that last from 5-10 min), including
i. Jumping jacks
ii. Running in place
iii. Or Spinning in circles - If you can handle that!
3. Bottom line, Everyone likes to laugh and have fun
Tip #5: Choose a Specific Location For within your home for School Work
1. Create A Classroom Space Within Your House
a. This can be either Small Or Large
i. It could be a Full Room if available
ii. If a full room is not available, this could be a small portion of a room… like a corner of the dining room.
b. Either way, Set up a table or desk
c. It’s very helpful to Decorate… especially For Younger Kids
2. Having a separate space Helps Keep your child Away From Distractions
3. It also Prevents You And Your Child From Searching For Resources
a. Because you end up Keeping School Supplies In Certain areas and not hunting around the house every time, you need a pencil or scissors.
This list is most definitely not exhausted, and in the next video, we will discuss more tips for teaching your child at home.
In the meantime, remember to be flexible and also to go easy on yourself, as you don’t have to be perfect to teach your children.
