You should do a series on the city of Portland: famous or favorite eateries, favorite coffee joints, record stores, book stores, clothing stores, dispensaries etc and bike around to each one when possible. Meet and talk to some locals, shoot some good videos, unearth some unknown $hit. I think people in other parts of the country (world?) are curious about that area.

We used to ride every morning at 6 am, so no food before. Now it depends on what distance AND the availability of food to acquire or carry with me. If it approaches 8:30 am, then “some” food is essential.

Around here most people run a small front fender on their mountain bikes year around. It keeps spatter and grit out of your eyes. I’m now using them on my drop bar bikes as well unless running full fenders. Seriously, the fork arch fender is like 50 grams. It’s ludicrous to ride in that region without one. Why would you want your face painted with mud?

I started doing the 16-8 fasting thing during the week a few months ago, so I don't eat before my ride to work (30k) and then wait until about 10-11am to have breakfast. It's pretty much fine and means that I can eat as much bread / pasta / pizza as I want and get away with it. Weekend rides (3+ hours) are fuelled (with muesli) beforehand. On a completely seperate matter, I'd recommend a tool tub (that fits in the second bottle cage) for wet rides. Much better than getting a soggy tubes and tools situation like in a saddle bag (and finding your Park Tools multi-tool rusts).
@EverythingsBeenDone3 жыл бұрын
Dude the tool tub is a great suggestion! thank you!

I began intermittent fasting (16/8) a few months ago and don’t eat until midday. At first I was really concerned I’d bonk but now I regularly ride 50+ kms (31+ miles) with 1200 mtrs (4000ft) of climbing just drinking water without any issues. It took a couple of weeks to acclimatise my system and I tend to eat a high fat medium protein diet (but not keto). Yeah, at age 62 it surprised me too. Go figure. 👍🏼🤣

Great video! Onsie did its job. As for eating I use to like riding fasted for shorter rides. But now I usually have a piece of toast with jelly no matter what. If anything just to help things get moving in the morning.

Nice one! Great PSM for fenders 😄. FYI I always eat carbs like rice or grains before the ride. Never have to worry about bonking. Oh, btw, I always fill one bottle with Yerba mate as it prevents dehydration big time.

Used to ride that exact route (commute) many many times a week when I lived in Portland. Never ate before, always ate after. Seems like it boosted the metabolism (or something) if I rode prior to eating. Miss that commute route. If you are early enough take Saltz-> Maple->Leif. ;)

Longer horns on the center bud. The bars that have them are really meant for cruising not climbing like the olden days. Meant to mimic hoods riding on the road bars. I have the Koga Denham bars on a tour-bike, way neat, but took me awhile to realize how to use them properly.

I usually don’t eat before an hour to hour and a half ride. My usual summer ride (snowed in in the winter) will have the first hour all climbing and I will gain 1500 feet and it is steep. I stop at the top and eat a “peakaboo” (a piece of break with a hole in the middle and an egg fried into the hole, (with cashews of course)). I’ll sit for a minute and then go on with the ride down the trail and back to my house. If I eat before a steep long climb I feel burdened and sometimes I feel like I’m going to puke. Ride first then eat and I’m good.

I never eat before I ride. Ok, rarely. I don't, fer instance, like how I feel if I ride right after breakfast. I used to get a bit peckish after an hour or so, but nowadays, unless I am riding more than three hours I don't usually eat anything. And then, I have to force myself to eat something at the 1.5 hour marks. I always, however, carry something to eat, usually some fig bars and a random Clif bar (mmmmm!), Justin Case. But last summer, I handed out more food to other riders than I ate. And that's why Clydes can go the distance.
