Most nationalists, however, denounced these maneuvers, and leadership in the struggle for independence from the French remained with the Viet Minh.” Wikipedia. The government of Viet Nam under Ho Chi Minh drafted a Declaration of Independence based on our own . He even presented it to the Geneva Convention and had hoped that the Americans would side with them against the French. The French had hoped to keep Indochina as they called it as a colony which it was pre ww2 until the Japanese ran them out. Then at the battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954 the French were defeated the United States feared the spread of communism because of China under Mao Zedong was supplying weapons and ammunition to the Vietminh took over the military action thus bringing the United States into twenty years of conflict.
