While H.R. Giger's work in film may be known by most as simply "the guy who made the alien from Alien" he's done art for several other features. Notably, the new species from Species. Of course, a movie doesn't come down to simply how nifty the creatures in it look... so does the rest of the film do the man's legacy justice?

No , a very mad, very drunk, woman waving a pistol, coming into a bar, looking for her cheating husband, is the scariest. Wasn't me , I was 16 at the time drinking a beer with my step-dad. we hid under a table for time, till my step-dad, stood up confronted her and told her her husband was not there. I 'll give him a brass balls award since she was still pointing the gun ( a cocked 357 S&W with a hair trigger*) in all kinds of dangerous directions, such as the entire bar crowd. The experience was interesting, to say the least.

I loved Forest's character because he's legit a scientific miracle and everyone instead is obsessed with this thing that can easily be regrown in a lab and wouldnt even be a problem if they had the foresight to make her infertile. In an alternate universe this movie is about Psychics fighting over an alien hybrid.

So many of H R Gigers other creature designs would make great movie monsters. Why he only has 2 on film makes no sense to me. Unless there are more I don't know about . I'd love a movie entirely made to look like the worlds he had designed. He will be missed :(

I heard that Species was originally a script for an early Alien vs Predator movie, but it fell flat on it's arse as the studio hated the script, so they rehashed it to be a stand alone movie (sorta as they didn't change much and you can still see what the original AvP idea was) The Predators were the ones to transmit the Xenomorph DNA sequence to us humans to try to create a new "species" to hunt. The idea was to move onto a full on AvP movie, with all the exposition done in this "Intro" film. It was a franchise bait that didn't work as it needed multiple films to make sense and the studio (quite rightly) didn't like the idea.

Rest well champ, you've earned it! Thanks for reviewing the film, been waiting on this given the Species series is kinda in that weird gray area. It's not as well known as the bigger alien horror series like Predator or Aliens, but it's a bit higher above the radar than lesser known horror series like Puppetmaster.

Are you going to do any of the Species sequels? The best thing about this film really is the HR Geiger designs. You have a human hybrid with accelerated growth((violating conservation of mass unless they gave her huge amounts of food), birth through the chest(cool but inefficient), and of course regeneration(conservation of mass again). Just the tentacles raise questions of where they are stored in the body and how they arent noticable growths. Species 2, well looking forward to that. Decker I remember something way back in your Alien review and how the xenomorph there actually had a logical drawback to its accelerated growth in that it didnt stop. Same issue was brought up here as Sil should be quite old.

Well, the first and second it was entretain, but after had went to Asylium (if im not mistaken) it went down, despite some interesting ideas, but went worst then first 2. I do like the concept of Species and Species 2, but there was several things that went kinda 90;s tv movie cliches, and not bother to explain in scientifically way. And the experts team, were just random characters without nothing to offer, except for Michael and Marg characters, that for some reason had to be romantic duo.... Natasha did a good representation, even with little dialogue and most of the time nude.... the rest are forgettable and pointless. CgI was horrible, but the suit was amazing, had should had keep that way.

The chick from "Species" would later go on to guest voice in an episode of "South Park". Which brings me to ask this question: which chick from "Species"? Is it Natasha Henstridge? Is it Marg Helgenberger? My point is Trey and Matt should've been more specific and simply credit her as Natasha Henstridge (AKA "the main chick from 'Species'").

(Watching this before your Species 2 review just to make sure I'm caught up) I think it may have been interesting to explore why she could detect the man's bad genes in the hotel room but not in the club. Perhaps her detection system is scent-based, so in an environment like an LA club, filled with sweat, alcohol, perfumes, and drugs, she may not have been able to detect such things at the time. I'm also curious as to why she needs to kill the men she sleeps with (yes, I'm aware it's a horror film, but still, a little explanation would be nice, like maybe they also partially spliced her with a Praying Mantis or something).
@raymondweis90
@raymondweis90 11 ай бұрын
Actually that is explained in the novelization for the movie its explaind, from Sils viewpoit. She can actually see things like smell/aura, and unhealthy humans have a sickly green Gass around them, and in the club there was way to many people, drugs and other things interfering with her sight.

Would had been nice use the Additional Notes to tell Giger's original idea of the train nightmare scene, or the bombastic / expensive X rated ending that he suggested to the producers. You see? Some of us read the additional notes! Thanks for add that extra information!

The scariest part for me was Sil's nipple tentacles. That was something I did not need to see

Proof that Giger probably needed therapy...and that the horror genre is lucky he didn't get it. I do think they could have done more with the character though. Young Sil seemed sympathetic, scared of her nature and even kinda nice. Then she goes adult and is suddenly right on board with the murder-and-spread-my-evil-progeny thing. Just seems like there was some narrative potential in her feeling conflicted is all.

Should have done a term paper on species instead of Ridley Scott and Alien. Use of the term money shot would have been a tad more appropriate. Retrospective aside I did the novelization of this movie and it’s sequel. They were a bit... better than the movies.

Sorta new to your channel, but yes, I also read the additional notes. Didn't realize they were a thing until the middle of my SUMMER OF FREDDY VERSUS JASON binge, but it's a nice peek into the slightly aside.

I always wait for the additional notes Decker. It’s good stuff. I was a little surprised at no mention of just how amazingly hot Natasha Henstridge is in this movie.

Best intro in ALL of KZbin! Anyway, Species is a decent movie. I remember watching this with my mother a couple times. She’s pretty big into “horror, sci-fi” movies. Great video, as usual, and 10/10 as ALWAYS! Keep it up, and you’re the bees knees, man. #DeckerShado
