In my 20's I was all about the military stuff. Well when I got $1200 back from taxes (2013 stimulus maybe?) I bought a 130 yr old Marlin Mod.1893 30-30. I had to source some bits here and there to repair it but after 3 test shots with it behind the shop, I was in love. These leverguns/revolvers stole my heart. Lookin to get into 44-40 next. They just feel so good in the hand man

Steve: I use five different leverguns in .32-20, .357 Mag, .44 Mag, .45 Colt and .30-30. I have aperture rear sights and either gold or white front beads on all of them. The beads show up much more clearly than a black Patridge blade whether the target is a black-on-white bullseye or game. None of mine are the fire-sight type of fiber optic, but those should work as well. I use a large bead, and zero so that the top edge of the bead is at POI at my zero range, the center of the bead is my first holdover, and the bottom of the bead is my second holdover. This will vary with the caliber and load, and I make a range card for each of my go-to loads so I can refresh my memory before I head out hunting or woodswalking. Example: .44 Mag, MP 245 gr KSWCHP with 24/296 - 50 yd top, 100 yd middle, 125 yd bottom. All the revolver-caliber leverguns have companion revolvers, and I use the identical loads in them.

Love the .44 mag cartridge with cast bullets, have three .44 mag rifles .each one has its preference for projectiles, luckily my marlin .44 mag rifle likes the 245 grain keith bullet .in fact it's the only one iv tried so far that shows good accuracy and it's crimped in the crimp grove. Have also found it to be a great projectile for wild pigs when placed in the right spot.i enjoy your videos, thanks from new zealand.

I have seen good accuracy out of my micro-groove M1895 .45-70 with cast bullets. I think it depends on the exact lead alloy and velocity level. Exact bullet diameter in relation to the barrel's groove diameter factors in as well. Great vid, Cookie. Thanks for posting on YT!

I have always believed “avoid Micro-Groove for cast bullets,” but check out Target Suite. He is having fantastic results with a 1959 vintage Marlin in .35 Remington.

Microgroove in 22lr, which uses a softer lead bullet (swaged, but not really different than cast), holds fine accuracy. Of course 22lr does not have the velocity or pressure of many centerfires and leading isn't a problem with them, but shooting a couple of bricks of 22lr in a day without any cleaning shows no effect on accuracy. If cowboy action were using dirty powder(like black powder) would likely be the problem with the microgroove over the actual lead, IMO.

Of all my lever actions I'm especially fond and really proud of my Marlin 1894 chambered in .44 Magnum. It's a great..., No..., it's an exceptional MARLIN carbine!! Again another excellent presentation. I have found that not all levers act the same. I have one that I found will cycle empty brass. I surmise that if I loaded true wad cutters, they would cycle. Levers are a lot of fun and can be rather accurate with slow fire from a rest and good sites. Keep up the good work.

Fortune Cookie, That's some pretty wood on that gun you got there. Here is something I bet you have never heard of. Back when I was a young boy when my brother showed me how to reload 100 grain plinkers. He told me to top my powder charge off with cornmeal. I didn't know any difference at the time so I did as he said ( this is what the owner of the gun shop told my brother to do ). The purpose of this was to keep the bullets from pushing back in a tubular magazine. I am not recommending anyone do this. I will say this that I have done it quite a few times and my brother has done it a lot more. I know for a fact he has even done it with a 307 Winchester. I couldn't begin to tell you what the pressures were or are.

I had the same issue with a Keith (Or maybe Lyman / Thomson as gas checked) semi wad cutter in my 1892 clone. Would not feed in a magnum case but shot nicely in a .44 Spec loaded up with the Hand Loader Magazine 44 + P loads it works delightfully

Hoping to cast some Lee 150 & 170 grn today for my 336's. A video on the powder loading weights for these would be helpful. Lee do not provide charge weights with the dies, as you know. I read about reducing the powder charge in the fabulous Lee book, but its difficult to grasp for me. I think you did great at 50 offhand as you had 10 of 10 on paper!

Loaded cast and powder coated lee 170grain 30-30win, they cycle fairly good in my marlin 996y, bought a henry wild life edition same rounds will not chamber. deep rifling cut into nose of bullet, recast same bullets and wiped powder coat away from the nose before baking, measured nose 0.300" same chambering issue.

I have an Uberti 1866 Yellowboy in .45 Colt and I found out that round nose is a no go unless I single load through the top. I'm looking for a Lee 255 grain RNFP mold with the crimp groove and I'm having a hard time locating one. Great video sir!

Try accurate molds. They custom make molds to your specifications. Not sure what the price is going to be, but like anything reloading related these days, probably pricey.

@@shadowcastre Yes there is. If I load round nose bullets they hang up on the feed ramp, they are too long. I can load them deeper into the case and clear the ramp but that leaves the bullet set too deep into the case and it has very little neck retention and feeding them into the tube would cause bullet setback. I am looking for a mold that is ROUND NOSE FLAT POINT with a crimp groove in 250/255 grain range that will function in the action and enable me to use the tube magazine without fear of bullet setback in the case. I will probably order from accurate molds. Thanks Cat G.

Maybe use a larger diameter boolit. The shorter OAL in the 44 special cartridge results in a much longer bullet jump. Use the largest diameter cast boolit that will easily chamber in your rifle. This will help the boolit stay properly aligned in the throat until it travels far enough forward to engage the rifling.

I'm reloading for my "Big Boy" Henry in .44 Magnum. Loading Hollow Base Wad Cutters with Tight Group gets the job done. Very little information for the full WCs but I found some out of the Handloaders Magazine. Also with a lever action rifle, loading of the rounds needs a full active process, do not limp in with operating the lever just go for it so everything is smooth.

Interestingly, the SAAMI spec for 44 mag cartridge dimensions is different for rifle vs handgun, with the rifle being .431 nominal. This had led to some confusion over the years and lots of issues with accuracy. As you suggested, the best approach is to slug the bore and go .001” - .002” over. Thanks for the informative video.

That’s interesting. I shoot Hornady 240gr XTP bullets that are I believe are 429 in my Winchester Legacy 24 inch barrel length Model 94 That group 5 Shots into an inch at 25 to 50 yards and around 1.2 in to 1.5 inch at 75 to 100 yards . I have a straight 4 power scope mounted on the rifle.

Rule number 1 for lever action rifle ammo and bullet selection. They MUST always be a flat or blunt point bullet. With a tube magazine the tip on the following round can and will set off a primer and cause a catastrophic chain of explosions in the magazine tube. The danger comes in with rough handling, bouncing around in a vehicle, 4-wheeler, boat or while on horseback as well as being dropped.

My Henry .410 side loader really doesn’t like any variation on length. I can’t feed my roll-crimps (slugs) through the king’s gate. They have to go in through the ejection port. My load: 27.2 grains lilgun> Claybuster plastic wad with wings cut down to 1/4”, Cream of Wheat filler from Lee .7cc, 1/4” paper wad, svarog cast pellet slug .25 oz. by .408” diameter. over-shot card, roll crimp. I get 2100 fps, but 7” groups at 25. I should note that the Cream of Wheat is un-cooked.

Something everyone should check on their lever action re loading. Some will allow you to feed a round until the gate has closed and still allow you to feed another round. Some won’t, requiring you to follow one by another without closing the gate. There are a couple videos out there showing the difference.

My 1st time ever 'hunting deer' I used a borrowed "94 lever gun" I went to the sporting goods store and told the guy I had a "94 lever gun" and needed 'bullets' for it,he sold me (a 14 year old kid) a box of 30-30s and away I went to kill a deer.... I did find 3 deer that first day,I shot at all 3 of them and all I did was teach them how to run faster.... the following Saturday the OWNER of said '94 lever gun' was with us and he finally told me that the rifle was a 32 WINCHESTER SPECIAL, HIGHLY unaccurate with 30 WCF ammo in it..... LOL

They sold & moved the plant & many unhappy workers = poorly built , fitted & shipped as is guns went out the door . Little help when they sent them back ( a few times ?? ). Also you must adaquately full length resize the cases. This also includes the dies being set to bumping the shoulder back ( for example on 30-30) at least enough to insure reloaded ammunition will easily and reliably cycle through the rifle.

I have a Marlin 336 30 30 recently took my fired brass and just neck size them and they cycled in the rifle really well I used the lee collet die before I use that die on them they would not cycle in Rifle so I think I'll just keep doing it and getting away with it until I have to full lenght resize them that'll be really easy on the brass and make it last

It took a few tries but I found a cast load that shoots well from my 336 with cast bullets. I did have to use a larger bullet, sized at 0.3105 instead of 0.309. It will shoot 0.309 ok, am I use them for cheaper shooting but the larger bullet really makes a difference.

I’m interested in velocity differences when shooting a revolver load in a carbine. I hand loaded some .38 125gn to 850fps. Most of them had a supersonic report while shooting suppressed in my Henry X. I’m not seeing a lot of carbine load data for a 38 special.

I am new to reloading my 336 in .30-30. I have the Lee Factory Crimp die you have recommended. How do I know how much to crimp? 21:39 "Why did you do this?" Because it is fun. If you aren't having fun shooting, why reload?

The Lee factory crimp die suggests a half turn more after touching the shell holder. A quarter turn further is the maximum before damaging the die. I normally go between those two positions. If you use too heavy of a crimp you can possibly damage the bullet jacket on plated or powder coated bullets.

Overcrimp tends to be pretty obvious, you’ll usually get a bulge kinda. I start with a light crimp, and feel each round with my finger. After you start increasing the crimp, you’ll find it reaches a point where the rim of the case doesn’t feel sharp because it’s angled in to the cannelure. That’s usually right about right for me.

Hi, I’ve been shooting cast bullets for a long long time and can tell you that .430 cast bullets shoot wonderfully well in my .444 Marlin. The whole micro-groove not handling cast very well is really nothing more than a perpetuated myth. Go to Castboolits website and see all the people doing it. I might add that .22 l.r. is lead and shoots well in micro groove. Only problem will be if your bullets are less than .430 like I said (at least in my Marlin). I’ve also used cast in micro-groove .30-30 with same great results.

Here’s a couple of Bullet molds that work great in my two new marlins 1894 in 44 mag and 45 colt, the first one is a NOE 432-255 plainbase SWC and a 454-255 plainbase SWC both are a Keith type SWC which cycles and shoots great to, 18.5 of 2400 powder for the 44 and 9 gr of unique for the 45 colt, these loads work great in the marlin 94’s, I size to .432 and .454 in a rcbs lubeamatic, around 3” to 4” groups out to 60/75 yards, makes a excellent hunting load or targets

I've got a quick question for you sir, I'm reloading my 45acp rounds and I'm running across more cases from range brass that are small primers. I know that they have both due to none corrosive issues but my question is how does this effect powder ignition and available load data? The Hodgdon sight only has large pistol primer data as does many reloading manuals. Is there a significant difference in primer power to be concerned about? Have you done any testing through Chronograph? I mean if we are using 4-5 grains of powder there is lots of empty space in that case and an even powder burn I question. Shoot me an answer or make a video if you can, I love your stuff and your information is always spot on. Thanks, Al

Surprisingly the power levels of most primers are basically irrelevant. Magnums, standards, rifle, pistol. Rifle primers are taller is pretty much the only important aspect. All brands are different powers, varying only slightly. Just don't use obviously wrong primers in max loads.

@@bobjohnson1633 Good point for sure. I did some chronograph testing with the 45ACP and the results were not excitable for sure. I loaded 10 rounds with the small pistol primers and 10 rounds with large pistol primers. Each case had exactly the same power charge and bullets used. In the end I could see almost no difference in velocity or feel from start to finish. Both primers did the job and did it well. Amazing.

Winchester Lever Action rifles in .44 Mag do not handle heavier bullets neither due to their 1: 38 twist rate. They group very well with, for caliber light, 180 grain and 200 grain bullets though driven to over 2000 ft/sec. Best groups in mine are 1" with 180 gr Hornady bullets driven to 2210 ft/sec at 100 yards shot on a rail rest that eliminates human error.

My problem with 44 mag in my Henry is case head separation. Can’t tell which of my brass is likely to split so I end up loading one round at a time, which isn’t as fun on a lever action.

I'm new at reloading, and bought Tite Group. From reading, this is no good for reloading for 44 mag lever action, whether it's a Henry, Winchester or Marlin. High pressure is the issue and the powder is too fast burning, so I've read. What would you suggest a good burning powder for a lever action? Higher pressure and velocity bullets need to be higher as the lead melts and vaporizes. Copper jackets or gas checks prevent the melting at the base, which is required at high velocities. Use the right hardness or gas checks for the speed of the bullet as required. I believe the silver alloy is just more malleable and less melty. Use gas checks anyway at high velocities.

I've seen people use distance to lands as a way to tighten groups on bolt guns. I wonder if people are doing this with lever action for good results?

Are you talking microgroove? Pistol style round Marlins do not use microgroove.
